Chang-I Amsterdam: delicious Asian food in Old South

31 January 2016

A foodie trip through Asia at Chang-I in Amsterdam

Are you as crazy about Asian food as I am? Make sure to put Chang-I in your Little Black Book. Originally it’s a Chinese restaurant, but these days you will actually find dishes from all over Asia on their menu. This restaurant is perfect for a date night if you ask me. It has a dark and intimate atmosphere and the food is delicious. Chang-I is one of the more chic Asian restaurants in Amsterdam, hidden behind the Concert building at Museumplein in Old South. So you have to actually know where it is, otherwise you might not even get there. And although Chang- I Amsterdam has been there for 10 years this year and it’s certainly not new, I do like to share this little gem with you.

The menu of Chang-I is full with dishes to share. What I like about Asian restaurants is that you can always try out so many different things on their menu. We really enjoyed a 4-course menu with different dishes in each course. We started with cold starters: a Thai mango salad, smoked duck breast, with kumquat marmalade and a Vietnamese wrap filled with chicken thighs. So delicious!

The warm starters at Chang-I Amsterdam are worth a try as well. They have a variety of dim sum on the menu which are a little more special than you would expect. Other starters not to miss are: the duck trio, shrimps rolled in tempura dough and the coquilles with flying roe.

I’m crazy about noodles and fried rice so obviously we are having that as a side dish. The Thai fish pot is a must-try just like the lambs rack with sate. Asian food is just so delicious. And if you still have some room left for dessert, you should do like we did, share something ;-). After a night long of enjoying a nice dinner, I’m secretly fantasising about our next trip to Asia. Hong Kong maybe, or Thailand? Or Bali again? Who knows what 2016 has to bring! Until then we will go back to Chang-I for our culinary Asia trip. A classic spot to remember!
