Actor Thijs Boermans recently proudly announced that he and his business partner Tijn Verstappen would be opening a restaurant. Together, they are at the helm of Nonna Amsterdam – a venue where everything revolves around traditional Italian cuisine.
It's to be expected that a restaurant called "Nonna" would focus on traditional Italian dishes. After all, nothing beats the recipes of an average Italian grandmother, lovingly passed on to the next generation.
For Thijs, this is a first foray into the hospitality industry, but far from it for his business partner, Tijn Verstappen. Tijn currently owns no fewer than thirteen restaurants in Amsterdam and one in Breda. Concepts he's created include Pazzi, Pepito, Gertrude, Linguini, and La Parole. Tijn frequently collaborates with actors; he previously opened restaurants with Manuel Broekman and Géza Weisz.
Nonna opened her doors at the beginning of May, on the always pleasant Jan Pieter Heijestraat in Amsterdam West. In a Instagram video proud Thijs explains: "Nonna is an ode to all the sweet grandmothers (and women) in the world who are there for us unconditionally and express that especially in the form of large quantities of delicious food."
Expect classic pasta dishes like carbonara, arrabiata, and bolognese, as well as pizzas from southern Italy and traditional dishes like melanzane, lasagna, gnocchi, and risotto. And in large quantities. Perhaps this hints at the concept that made Linguini popular: pasta and other dishes ordered in a large pan, enjoyed by the whole table. Nonna is open every day of the week and for lunch on weekends. Walk-ins only!
