Immerse yourself in Japan’s wonderful world but in Amsterdam’s city centre! This has recently become possible at Nishi Market Amsterdam – a Japanese mini-department store on the Zeedijk.

Nishi Market Amsterdam is the very first Japanese department store in our capital

When Nishi Market owner Margeret Westrate visited Takeshita Street – the busiest street in Tokyo – twenty years ago, she had no idea what was happening to her. Severely overstimulated, she was in awe; the road left a deep impression. She decided to recreate that atmosphere and soon later opened Nishi in Rotterdam. When an opportunity arose on the Zeedijk, it was a dream come true. And so the Zeedijk has gained a Japanese hotspot since September.

What to expect from Nishi Market?

A Japanese department store, what exactly is that? At Nishi Market, you will find everything with a Japanese theme. Colourful dresses, cuddly toys, lunch boxes, and other gadgets, often with a ‘cute’ character. Margeret is immensely fascinated by the Lolita clothing style many Japanese swear by. These are over-the-top outfits with cute details. Think of a lot of pink and girly influences. You will also find Japanese beauty products in sweet colors at Nishi.

Interior Nishi Market

In Japan, and especially Tokyo, nothing is too crazy – and the Lolita clothing style is living proof. Lolita is kawaii, which literally means over-the-top, and is called Margeret, which is reflected in the complete (light pink!) interior. There is also a zen corner for those who find this all too much. Shielded by a Japanese folding screen, you can completely relax here. You can enjoy the tranquility that Japan also has to offer, including traditional kimonos. In short, every Japanese lover will find something they like at Nishi Market Amsterdam. It is an experience not to be missed in the capital.
