17 x MEXICAN RESTAURANTS IN AMSTERDAM TO TRY ONE BY ONE
Fiona
Brand new and already popular: Fiona Amsterdam on Warmoesstraat, right in the heart of the city centre. Mexico’s most famous female chef, Zahie Téllez, was the primary inspiration behind this new establishment. This translates to spar ribs, tacos, ceviche, and more of the goodness her homeland has to offer.

OAXACA
Anyone who has been to Mexico knows that the food over there often differs from what the average Mexican restaurant in the Netherlands might suggest. The rule has similarities and exceptions, but authentic Mexican food is rare. Within this category, the two establishments of MasMais are a great asset to the capital, and the recently opened Oaxaca Amsterdam adds even more to the mix.

MASMAIS
There’s no shortage of Mexican restaurants in our capital: in Amsterdam-Noord, Coba and Bacalar have been reigning for a while, and in Amsterdam-West, MasMais Marisquaria recently joined its ‘sibling’ MasMais Taqueria, also located in West. The owners visited Mexico multiple times for their newest establishment, overwhelmed by the incredible seafood dishes, outstanding cocktails, and delightful atmosphere. They unanimously agreed: such a concept was missing in Amsterdam. Since then, Marisquaria has been focused on seafood, and their Taqueria on tacos that taste just like those in Mexico.

Lupe
With the arrival of Lupe at the end of last year, Bos en Lommer gained a new Mexican restaurant. On weekdays, you can enjoy authentic Mexican dishes at this unique South American hotspot in Amsterdam-West. On weekends, they serve an extensive brunch as the icing on the cake.

Madre
Madre at Westerstraat is not only vegan but also affordable. For €41.5, you can indulge in an extensive chef’s choice menu featuring a wide array of Mexican delights. Are you not in the mood for a set menu? They offer many other à la carte dishes as well.

ROSARIO CUCINA MEXICANA
From the tacos to the chef’s menu to the margaritas, everything you order at Rosario Cucina Mexicana is a feast for the eyes and a delight for the taste buds. This ‘modern Mexican’ restaurant serves unique dishes; the quesadillas with fiore di latte cheese and artichoke are an absolute hit, as is the sea bass ceviche. Extra fun: they’re also open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sins of Sal
At Sins of Sal, you’ll momentarily feel transported to another world – an underworld, to be precise. This establishment excels in spicy cocktails and matching dishes, but they also know their way around natural wines. They even make sangria with them. When it comes to dinner, they go all out: you can indulge in deliciously prepared soft-shell crab, oysters, tacos, dumplings, and spare ribs.

Local Dealer
At Dapperplein in Amsterdam-Oost, you’ll find Local Dealer, a vibrant restaurant serving the best Mexican food in the East. Under the motto “your number one taco dealer,” they live up to their name with freshly made tacos. When it comes to toppings and ingredients, the chefs have free rein: they experiment with ancient Mexican traditions and modern practices and ingredients.

Parakeet
Tasty nachos and flavourful cocktails: head to Parakeet in the West for these guilty pleasures. They serve tortilla chips with pride, made from locally sourced corn without any preservatives, and transformed into tacos.

Até
Mexican cuisine at a high level? You can find it at Até, which chef Filip Hanlo of The Dylan developed. The chef grew up in a hospitality family in Yucatán, thanks to his Mexican mother. He then spread his wings, working at prestigious establishments such as Noma***, Chez Panisse, Azure 45*, Restaurant Cheval Blanc***, and Le Grand Restaurant**. These are no small names; you can taste their influence in Até’s dishes.

COBA TAQUERIA
My personal favourite is Coba Taqueria in Amsterdam North, where tacos are taken to a higher level. Transport yourself directly to Mexico (complete with cacti, small stools, and colourful rugs) and indulge in the art of taco making. Treat yourself and order as many different tacos and cocktails as possible. Aiiii caramba!

SEÑOR MOSTACHIO
Señor Mostachio is a small spot tucked away; you must know it’s there. They have a lovely terrace and are convenient if you want to grab a quick bite or feel lazy; they also offer home delivery!

FLORA
Like Coba, Flora is an authentic taqueria. Unfortunately, they don’t have a fixed location, but they are actively searching for a new place and organizing pop-ups. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates and the menu.

LOS PILONES
Los Pilones has two locations in Amsterdam. Here, they serve accessible Mexican dishes, and the location near Leidseplein is an excellent alternative among all the tourist traps! Enjoy tacos in all shapes and sizes and larger dishes like cochinita de pibil and Mexican brunch on weekends.
Kerstraat 59 – 63 & Geldersekade 111, Amsterdam, lospilones.com
CALLE OCHO
It’s a fun hotspot on the Albert Cuypmarkt. A big plus is that you can still order food until late at night – even on weekdays! Also, men behind the bar can shake dangerously delicious cocktails. In short, Calle Ocho is a recommendation for a fun night out!

BACALAR
Named after the world-famous azure-blue lake in Yucatan, Bacalar is another great spot for tacos and other Mexican classics. The owner previously worked at Coba, so you can be sure it’s top-notch!
Chrysantenstraat 4, Amsterdam, bacalar.amsterdam
MR HAZ TACOBAR
As the name suggests, you also come here for the tacos. In addition to the Mexican variations, they offer tacos with scrambled eggs, feta, and bacon. YUM! Also, be sure to look around; the street art on the walls is very cool.
