Have you always been fascinated by the work of Studio Drift? You are not the only one, because in 2025 a real Drift museum will open in Amsterdam -East. Think of enormous floating concrete blocks and other characteristic works of art by hand. This is all we know so far.

Everything we know so far about the brand-new Drift Museum

The artist duo behind Drift expects half a million visitors per year. Founders Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta came up with the idea for their museum after the success of their exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Their show attracted more than 260,000 visitors from all over the world in four months and was photographed endlessly. Things have moved quickly since then: the Rijksmuseum bought their work, as did the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Their drone shows also attract large audiences; they were seen above Central Park in New York, at the Colosseum in Rome, and at the cult festival Burningman.

Location Drift museum

The artists will not run the Drift Museum alone. For this project, they sought collaboration with the owner of the Amsterdam Van Gendt Hallen, Eduard Zanen. Finding a suitable location was crucial for the museum, given the enormous installations of ‘floating concrete blocks ‘ that Drift has become famous for. There could be no better location than the Van Gendt Hallen in Amsterdam East; with their length of 160 meters and height of over 20 meters, there is enough space to allow objects to float through space. The halls are somewhat reminiscent of the warehouses on the NDSM Shipyard, except that these are national monuments and will remain standing forever.

Drift’s artworks do not fit well in a standard museum; This is not only because of their size but also because of the theatrical aspect of the installations. The Van Gendt Hallen are perfect for this, thanks to their height and unique light. We must wait until the museum opens because the monumental halls are being thoroughly renovated. In 2025, they will be energy-neutral and ready to house Drift’s works of art for good. To be continued
