De Willem, Amsterdam Center: a cozy addition to the Haarlemmerbuurt

29 January 2024

Earlier this year, Café De Willem had to close due to a lack of permits, but Restaurant De Willem is now back on track. And they are unstoppable! It’s always packed, the staff visibly enjoy their work, and the menu is excellent.

De Willem Amsterdam Center

It was a bit of a shock when Café De Willem in Amsterdam had to close its doors after a short trial period. The permits didn’t come through, but luckily, it wouldn’t be long before everything was sorted out. And so, owners Maarten de Vries and Jamie van der Will (whom you might know from Kopstootbar) reopened De Willem with a big bang and a packed terrace, because even with a little sunshine, it’s already a delight to be here.

Menu De Willem

The menu of Café De Willem is original and consists of small, shareable dishes. Just to clarify: at the moment, only the café section is open, while the restaurant part is still in the works. Nevertheless, that doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm, as the menu is excellent. Take the artichoke hearts, prepared in a way you’ve likely never tasted before – we’re confident vouching for that. And don’t miss the brioche with shiitake and truffle; it’s a delightful treat for your taste buds. The flavor combinations and perfect balance of textures elevate each dish beyond being just visually pleasing – because the presentation is also meticulously curated. You can visit daily for lunch, dinner, and drinks, choosing from an extensive selection of wines and non-alcoholic delights.

The interior of the monumental building at Haarlemmerplein has a French touch with marble, wood, and small round tables. However, it’s also light and modern, thanks to a Scandinavian influence. There are plenty of reasons to visit De Willem – whether for a lengthy terrace session by the water or an indoor experience. Either way, you’re sure to have a great time.
