From early morning till late at night: at Café Gitane in Amsterdam-West, located on Jan Pieter Heijestraat, you can go anytime throughout the day. Whether it’s for a small or big appetite, quenching your thirst, or getting that much-needed caffeine boost, this is the place to be. We believe you should visit the new hotspot in Amsterdam-West this summer (and beyond).

all about the chef and owner of Gitane Amsterdam

The originally Greek chef and owner, Angelo Kremmydas, is no stranger to the restaurant world. He spent three years in the kitchen at London’s Nopi under the guidance of the renowned Ottolenghi. There, he realized the importance of creating his own spice blends, and the rest is history. He learned the tricks of the trade and eventually moved to Amsterdam, where he was appointed as the executive chef of BAUT. Now, Angelo is at the helm of Café Gitane, where he leads the kitchen and is also a co-owner.

Menu of Café Gitane

The menu at Café Gitane consists of fresh, seasonal ingredients. Alongside kohlrabi, yellow beets, and burrata, you’ll find dishes featuring lamb, côte de boeuf, and cod. Everything is ordered à la carte because Angelo doesn’t like “fuss with fixed menus” – he prefers that you order what you feel like having.

On the menu, you can taste Angelo’s Mediterranean heritage, but above all, it is a blend of cultures and traditions. The steak tartare is made with Indian spices and papadum, and he combines cold-served peppers with original flavour combinations of tahini, black garlic, and orange blossom.

Wine enthusiasts will also be delighted at Café Restaurant Gitane Amsterdam. The wine selection is extensive and precisely what you would hope for. Natural wines are abundant, sourced from Amsterdam’s wine house. They have also carefully considered the accompanying bread (which they happen to get from Amsterdam’s finest sourdough bakery and neighbour, Levain et Le Vin).

Café Gitane’s great interior design

The interior of Café Gitane is just as visually appealing. You’ll feel welcome and at home with high ceilings, beige walls, light wood, and a blend of Scandinavian design with a laid-back Mediterranean energy. Angelo has already provided an Instagram sneak peek that will excite interior design enthusiasts. In short, this is the new place to be in West. And did we already mention they also have great outdoor seating?

Reservations are available for dinner, lunch, and drinks are available for walk-ins as well. You can visit Café Gitane throughout the day: the breakfast menu is just as good as the dinner, and we haven’t even mentioned the snacks yet. So, no matter what time of day you’re craving a drink, a cup of coffee, a meal, or a snack, Gitane Amsterdam is now your go-to spot.
