Café Cress Amsterdam-Noord: the charming new hotspot above the IJ river

In Amsterdam North, there’s an abundance of fantastic hotspots, ranging from restaurants to hotels, coffee bars, and cafes. Those seeking good food can confidently cross the IJ. Café Cress Amsterdam is a delightful addition to the offerings in this district—another reason to hop on the ferry.

Why you should pay a visit to Café Cress

At Café Cress, they do things a bit differently. Owner Cyril Martineau met partners Jeffrey Klepper and Niamh Groentjes at their previous workplace, Floreyn, on Albert Cuypstraat. Despite a completely different location, Cyril still picks up all the fresh ingredients from the farmer at Albert Cuypmarkt every morning. They cook with what’s in stock, and the menu changes weekly.

Cress’s interior is minimalistic yet cosy. Thanks to the enormous windows on either side of the building (Cress is situated on the corner of Johan van Hasseltkade), it’s always bright, and even in winter, you feel like you’re outdoors.

THE CHANGING MENU OF CAFÉ CRESS AMSTERDAM

The weekly changing menu is indeed concise. The owners prefer not to label their cooking style; they cook with available ingredients based on what they enjoy in a restaurant. They offer five different sandwiches on sourdough bread from the city bakery Van As for lunch. Think of original combinations like salmon with horseradish and apple or chicken with honey and labneh. As for appetizers, the mushroom croquettes with lovage and the sardines with sorrel and toast are big hits. The dinner menu always consists of three starters and main courses, two desserts, and the ever-present cheese platter from Kef. All ingredients are locally sourced as much as possible, except for the wines – for those, Cyril happily drives back and forth to France regularly.
