Satay and Asian gin and tonics at satéclub Wunderbar Amsterdam
You have to look for it, because usually you wouldn’t find such cool restaurants in the touristic
centre of Amsterdam. You’ll find Satéclub Wunderbar Amsterdam in a small alley between the Rokin and the Kalverstraat, down in the basement. Satéclub Wunderbar has been one of our favourites for a while now. The location makes it even better! Besides, the Satéclub Wunderbar is the perfect spot for everyone who’s out for shopping in the centre and could use a drink. Or after: when the shopping bags start feeling a little bit heavy on your arms… Then bring your new stuff here and grab a meal!
The menu at Satéclub Wunderbar Amsterdam is Indonesian. It has different kinds of satays on the menu. We tried all of them in the satay sharing plate. There was also vegetarian satay on the plate (made of tempeh), but we were impressed especially by the satay kambing. So tender! The satay is served with fresh gado gado and homemade sambal- that is if you can handle it of course. ;-)
Next to delicious food, the Satéclub Wunderbar also serves homemade gin! Perfect in a gin & tonic with lemongrass, lychee and grapefruit. And we must be honest… From now on, you can wake us up in the middle of the night to have an Indonesian G&T! ;-)
The cocktail you see in the picture is the Indonesian Pornstar, a cocktail that contains spekkoekliquor (Indonesian layered cake). We had never even heard of the existence of spekkoekliquor, but are big fans already. Before you start drinking the pornstar, you take a few sips of prosecco. That way your tasting sense will be as alert as possible.
The dessert also tastes good. You can tell by the taste of the dishes that family recipes are used and that chefs with Indonesian roots are cooking here. The dessert is a sereh crème brulée and spekkoek parfait. Yum!
We are huge fans of this unexpected cute spot in the city centre, where you can also sit great in the summer. Then they will put picknick tables in the alley: awesome people watching guaranteed. Enjoy!
