Good to know Yogyakarta

get to know yogyakarta in 16 tips here!

Are you going to Yogyakarta, Java, for the first time? Quickly check out this blog with handy facts and get to know to town for a bit already! Curious as to how my trip through Java was? Then watch my travel vlog where I take you with me on adventure!

  1. While on a round trip to Java you can easily spend a couple of days in Yogyakarta. They are lots of nice restaurants, sightseeings and good hotels.
  2. The number 1 places to visit in and around Yogyakarta are: Prambanan, Taman Sari, Vredeburg, the Keraton Ngayogyakarta palace and the Borobudur.
  3. Yogyakarta is a real student city! There are around 19 universities and you can imagine there are lots of young folks living here because of that.
  4. If you ask me, the nicest neighbourhoods of Yogyakarta is the area around Jl. Prawirotaman and the area from the Phoenix Hotel till around Dixie Jogja where they are several universities situated.
  5. On Java amost everyone is Muslim. This is especially notable by the absence of alcohol in lots of local restaurants. In most hotels you can just order a beer. My favourite bar to have a drink after dinner was the Oxen Free bar, ViaVia and Move On and they do serve alcohol there.
  6. An easy way to get around in Yogyakarta is by taxi or Becak. A ride in the taxi has a minimum price of 25.000 Rupiah and a Becak should be around 10.000 Rupiah for a distance of approximately 10 minutes.
  7. For me the city of Yogyakarta is really clear despite it has around 400.000 residents.
  8. From Yogyakarta you can travel to the whole of Java by train. I traveled first class to Malang and I loved it as a way to get from A to B.
  9. There are a couple of clubs in Yogyakarta, like Boshe and Sugar. If you feel like going out for a dance then that’s where you should go.
  10. In lots of the hip restaurants you’ll find international dishes on the menu. Just as much as we like Asian food they love pizza and hamburgers in Yogyakarta.
  11. The people here are SUPER friendly. This is by far the most friendly population I came across in a while during my trips. They are willing to help you with anything and are always smiling.
  12. Everywhere on the street you’ll come across street food stalls in Yogyakarta. The food they sell here are satays with everything on it, bakpao and soto ayam. If you love street food then look up the side streets of Jl. Malioboro and you’ll definitely succeed there for a tasty and cheap meal.
  13. Want to buy a couple of nice souvenirs? In that case, go to the many shops on Jl. Malioboro. I regretted not buying more here afterwards, because I didn’t run into such cute items in others cities on Java.
  14. Yogyakarta is known as the city of the batiks and you can buy beautiful pieces of fabrics on Jl. Malioboro. Also great to make something for back home!
  15. Did you know that Yogyakarta is not that far from the beach? You can go to the sea from the city during a day trip!
  16. Do you want to travel on to Bali after a visit to Yogyakarta? You can take a direct bus to the tropical island. When you take the bus from Yogyakarta to Bali, the passage with the ferry is included in the price. Another way to get to Bali from Yogyakarta is by taking the plane.

In the extensive Yogyakarta Travel Guide or in the Java Travel Guide you’ll find more tips for a round trip through Java.
