5 X wonderful weekend getaways in your own country (or just across the border)

Weekend getaways in your own country. You probably know by now that I'm crazy about them. For my book "Staycation," I created guides to the best cities in the Netherlands and Belgium. It left me wanting more! So, last year I also went in search of the best hotels and cottages outside the city. Hotels where you can completely unwind and relax. Some might even have a spa and wellness center and usually a good restaurant. Or cottages in a wooded setting where you can snuggle up by the fireplace in the evening or sit outside with a snack platter full of delicious treats from the local deli.

Come with me to get breakfast in Taipei 🥢 Straight from the airport to this little spot to taste soup dumplings and so much more! That's what I call a soft landing 😉
Just back from Catalonia and I thought: I'll share some tips right away. During our road trip, we stayed two nights in the Ebro Delta. An incredibly fun stop for families and foodies alike, where there is plenty to do. · A boat trip to the Musclarium is a must! Here you eat oysters and mussels straight from the farm, in the middle of the sea. · Admire the flamingos and black ibises that can be found here all year round. · Rice is grown in the Ebro Delta all year round. For paella, but Kensho also makes sake and miso from it! You can visit them during a tasting. · Cycling along the rice fields, canoeing on the Ebro River, and visiting various beaches. It was still a bit too cold now, but there is plenty to do. · The towns are very low-key and not that exciting, but you can find fantastic local food there. From the Michelin-awarded Les Moles* to local eateries like Vermuteria Bonmarisc and Lo Tinglado. We ate a lot of fish, but also anemone fritters (a first!). Now back to work, and I’m going to create an extensive travel guide of this road trip through Catalonia, but you’ll want to save these tips for a future adventure. ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck { In this post, I share tips for the Ebro Delta in Spain (Delta de l'Ebre). Places to stay that are perfect for a night away

This year we drive in our Peugeot 2008 I'm traveling all over the country again, and I've planned a few weekend getaways each month to escape the hustle and bustle of our renovations. Enjoying walks, cozy drinks, and quality time together. Where are we all going or have we already been? In this guide, I've listed five favorite spots for you!

At Jef's// Texel

Distance from Amsterdam: 102 km. // 2 hours 2 minutes

A weekend on Texel feels like a real mini-vacation to me. It starts the moment you drive onto the ferry and see the quay of Den Hoorn appear shortly after. What I love about Texel is the sheer variety of culinary delights. We prefer to stay overnight. at Jeff, a boutique hotel with just a few rooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant. Booking a few months in advance is essential, though you might get lucky in the fall.

Staying and dining here is an unforgettable experience, thanks in part to the fantastic breakfast. Since Manuel was born, I've been a huge fan of hotels that also have a good restaurant. After an afternoon in the woods, we'll enjoy a nice drink and then put him to bed at his leisure using the baby monitor. Then we can enjoy a leisurely meal ourselves! The next morning, take a lovely walk at the Slufter or in the woods, and you'll return home feeling completely refreshed.

Hotel de Sterrenberg // Otterlo (Veluwe)

Distance from Amsterdam: 80,8 km. // 1 hours 4 minutes

The Veluwe is actually so close to the Randstad, but it's always so enchantingly beautiful. Last spring we were there to escape the city for a bit, and this month we're going back for a winter weekend getaway. Hotel de Sterrenberg is one of the tips I received on Instagram Stories from followers when I asked where our next Peugeot road trip should take us. This boutique hotel is located in Otterlo on the edge of the Hoge Veluwe National Park.

There are several forests in the area where you can enjoy lovely walks, but I always love the bikes you can borrow at the park entrance, so we always go to the official park where you have to pay an entrance fee. It's wonderful to take a scenic ride through the forest and cover a longer distance in a short time. It's also a great way to combine it with a visit to the Kröller-Müller Museum if you've never been there before.

What I'm most looking forward to about our stay at De Sterrenberg is the pool and wellness area. It's so nice to take a quick swim or visit the sauna after a day spent outdoors. Afterwards, enjoy a good glass of wine by the fireplace and settle in for a sumptuous dinner at Cèpes. This restaurant has been awarded a Bib Gourmand designation in the Michelin Guide. Please note: Hotel De Sterrenberg became an adults-only hotel for guests aged 16 and over in June 2020.

Park Broekhuizen // Leersum

Distance from Amsterdam: 69,6 km. // 54 minutes

Believe me, you will forget the worries of a busy work week once you drive up the long driveway. Parc Broekhuizen As you drive up, this unique hotel is so beautiful, you'll want to stay here someday! We stayed here just before they quickly earned their first Michelin star in 2018 for their restaurant Voltaire. A Hollywood Regency-style restaurant where you can sit down for a lavish dinner.

Although cribs are available upon request and the 3G baby monitor app works perfectly within the estate's thick walls, I would definitely bring the little one elsewhere next time. This hotel is the perfect getaway for a truly romantic weekend away for two. There are lovely walks in the immediate vicinity of Parc Broekhuizen, and even when it's colder outside, you can relax with a drink under a blanket on the terrace overlooking the large pond. As you can see, we'll definitely be back!

Nutchel // Maaseik, Belgium

Distance from Amsterdam: 188 km. // 2 hours 8 minutes

Just across the Belgian border on the Het Warredal estate, near Maaseik, you'll find the Nutchel glamping concept. Unwind surrounded by nature, but with comfort. A weekend stay in these cabins has been on my bucket list for a long time, but due to renovations and projects abroad, it hasn't happened yet. Summer or winter, every season at Nutchel has its own charm. Enjoy the longer days outside on your patio. Or the colder evenings by a crackling wood stove.

I've heard a lot of good things about this holiday park. There are various cabins available for rent, from tiny houses to treehouses. It's the perfect adventure for those who want to escape the city and experience a completely different environment. Miss the city during your forest adventure? Maastricht is just a 40-minute drive away!

Hotel Merlet // Schoorl

Distance from Amsterdam: 54,2 km. // 51 minutes

As someone from Zeeland, I know better than anyone how wonderful it is to get away for a weekend near the beach. Especially in winter! Put on your boots and enjoy a stroll on the hard sand along the surf. Afterwards, have a drink at one of the beach bars that are open year-round. A weekend like that with salty air is always a good idea! A nice place to stay near the beach with a good restaurant is Hotel Merlet in Schoorl. The interior of the Michelin-starred restaurant has recently been extensively renovated. In the evenings, you can enjoy a sumptuous, top-notch dinner here.

From the hotel, you can quickly reach the Schoorl dunes for a walk, and the village of Bergen is only a ten-minute drive away. Like the other hotels I recommend in this blog, Merlet offers packages that include dinner in the restaurant. Because it's not far from Amsterdam, it's also a wonderful place to spend a night. Believe me, you'll feel like you've truly escaped!
