Whale watching in Reykjavik: one of the best tours in Reykjavik

Whale watching in Reykjavik: the number one Icelandic safari

On a short city trip to Reykjavik or a round trip in Iceland a whale watch tour is a must! Best period for whale watching in Reykjavik is June to August when the whales migrate to colder water. But don’t worry if you’re going to Reykjavik another month, because whales are spotted all year round. There are some resident whales in the bay near just outside of Reykjavik. Several companies organize tours for whale watching in Reykjavik. We went with Elding and had a good time. Not so much luck on the whale watching though, we only saw a whales back and a fin ;-) after three hours on the boat (in April). If you don’t have sea legs prepare for a wild trip. The water is very rough and I saw a lot of people getting sick… so prep yourself before the boat leaves. The old harbour where the boats leave to go whale watching in Reykjavik is in walking distance from the city centre. After whale watching Iceland Fish & Chips is a nice cafe for lunch.

Check out the movie to see how wild the water can be around Reykjavik!

PS: more nice addresses in Reykjavik are in my online Reykjavik Little Black Book. For the best restaurants, shops and things to do on a city trip in Reykjavik. If you’re in Reykjavik for more than 2 nights it’s nice to take a little tour out of town as well. And don’t miss out on the Blue Lagoon. It’s touristy, but a must visit on a trip to Reykjavik!
