16 things you want to know about Yogyakarta (Java, Indonesia)

Get to know Yogyakarta in 16 tips!

Visiting Yogyakarta, Java, for the first time? Then read this blog post with helpful tips and get to know the city a bit! Curious about my Java trip? Then check out my travel vlog where I take you on an adventure!

  1. You can easily spend a few days exploring Yogyakarta during a tour of Java. There are plenty of great restaurants, sights, and good hotels.
  2. The number 1 sights in and around Yogyakarta are: Prambanan, Taman Sari, Vredeburg, the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Palace and the Borobudur.
  3. Yogyakarta is a true student city! There are about 19 universities, and you can imagine that this means there are a lot of young people living in the city.
  4. In my opinion, the nicest neighborhoods in Yogyakarta are the area around Jl. Prawirotaman and the area around the Phoenix Hotel, up to and including Dixie Jogja, where several universities are located.
  5. In Java, almost everyone is Muslim. This is especially noticeable in the absence of alcohol in many local restaurants. In most hotels, you can order a beer. My favorite bar for after-dinner drinks was Oxen Free, ViaVia, and Move On, where they serve alcohol.
  6. An easy way to get around Yogyakarta is by taxi or becak. A taxi ride has a minimum fare of 25.000 Rupiah, and a becak should cost around 10.000 Rupiah if the distance is around 10 minutes.
  7. I find Yogyakarta a very manageable city even though almost 400.000 people live there.
  8. From Yogyakarta, you can travel to all of Java by train. I traveled to Malang in a first-class compartment and found it a very pleasant way to get from A to B.
  9. There are a few nightclubs in Yogyakarta, like Boshe and Sugar. If you're looking to go out, that's where you should go.
  10. Many of the trendier restaurants offer international cuisine. Just as we love Asian food, Yogyakarta is crazy about pizza and burgers.
  11. The people are SUPER friendly. Easily some of the friendliest I've encountered in my travels in a long time. They're willing to help you with anything and are almost always smiling.
  12. You'll find street food stalls everywhere in Yogyakarta. Common food stalls here include satay with a variety of ingredients, bakpao, and soto ayam. If you enjoy street food, explore the side streets of Jl. Malioboro, where you're sure to find a delicious and affordable meal.
  13. Want to pick up some nice souvenirs? Then you should visit the many shops on Jl. Malioboro. I really regretted not buying more here afterward, as I haven't found such lovely items in other cities on Java.
  14. Yogyakarta is known as the city of batiks, and you can find beautiful fabrics on Jl. Malioboro. It's also fun to have something made for your home!
  15. Did you know that Yogyakarta isn't far from the beach? You can take a day trip to the seaside from the city!
  16. Want to travel on to Bali after visiting Yogyakarta? You can take a direct bus to the tropical island. If you take the bus from Yogyakarta to Bali, the ferry crossing is included in the price. Another option for traveling from Yogyakarta to Bali is by plane.
