The new Amsterdam weekend tips are ready for you! For over 15 years, I've been happily creating this Amsterdam Weekend Guide, featuring my personal favorites for fun things to do this weekend. In this weekly column, I'll also tell you all about the must-sees in Amsterdam and give you a behind-the-scenes look at Your Little Black Book. Want to read along?

➊ These are the must-see events in Amsterdam this weekend:
Free performances at the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre // through mid-September
One of the best free outings of the Amsterdam summer? That remains the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre. From May through September, you can visit (almost) every weekend for a varied program featuring music, dance, comedy, classical music, and youth performances.
On Friday evenings, dance performances are on the program, Saturday features family theater and comedy, and on Sundays you can enjoy classical concerts and live music. All performances are free of charge; however, a voluntary contribution is appreciated so that the theater can continue to exist in the coming summers. Sometimes you need to register in advance if a large crowd is expected. View the program here >>

Summer on the roof of NEMO is back // through August 29
Looking for a nice spot for a summer evening in the city? Then the iconic rooftop of NEMO Science Museum is highly recommended. Until the end of August, the rooftop is open for free every Thursday evening until 9:00 PM. With live music, a good drink on the terrace, and perhaps the most beautiful view of Amsterdam, this is one of our favorite places to end the day.
Every Thursday, new artists are on the program, organized in collaboration with GRAP. Additionally, this summer you can also visit the roof for outdoor yoga classes, a bite or drink at the museum restaurant, and an open-air cinema.

Summer Light Restaurant on Pampus // through August 22
Are you looking for a special date night this summer? Then Zomerlicht on Forteiland Pampus is an experience you won't soon forget. You step aboard the boat, leave the city behind, and sail towards the historic island, where a culinary evening with a view of the IJmeer awaits you.
Upon arrival, you can first wander freely around the island, have a drink on the grass or on the jetty, and enjoy the view. Afterwards, you will sit down for a multi-course dinner featuring seasonal dishes as the sun slowly sets. The return trip under the evening sky completes the experience. Watching a movie under the starry sky remains one of the most special summer outings in Amsterdam. ARTIS Zoomer Evenings are back // through August 29
One of our favorite summer traditions is back. During the ARTIS Zoomeravonden, ARTIS remains open every Saturday until sunset, allowing you to experience the park in a completely different way. Stroll past the animals in the evening light, listen to live music in the Bandstand, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere amidst the greenery.
In addition to performances by up-and-coming musical talent, there is plenty to do every week for young and old. Think of guided tours, workshops, children's yoga, the Water Mission, and puppet shows. Extra fun: since this summer, you can also the completely renovated ARTIS Aquarium visit during your evening in the park.
When: every Saturday until August 29, 2026 from 16:00 to 21:00

The Hortus summer evenings are back // through August 30
The summer evenings at the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam are back. In July and August, the city's most beautiful garden stays open extra long every Sunday, allowing you to enjoy blooming borders, tropical greenhouses, and a relaxed atmosphere amidst the greenery until 8:00 PM.
Stroll through the garden during golden hour, join one of the special Summer Tours led by the guides, or find a spot on the sunny terrace with a drink. Adding to the atmosphere: every Sunday there is live music from various bands and ensembles. Expect a varied program including classical jazz and passionate boleros as the soundtrack to your evening walk.
When: every Sunday until the end of August

Summer at the Amsterdam Forest Theatre
A summer in Amsterdam is really not complete without an afternoon or evening at the Amsterdamse Bostheater. Nestled among the trees, you can watch theatre, concerts, family shows, and film nights in the open air. The program includes the family show Robin Hood (4+), and later this summer, Bosfest, the Cinetree Forest Festival, and various concerts will follow.
Extra special: you are literally surrounded by greenery, making a visit to the Bostheater feel like a mini-vacation without having to leave the city.

Grachtenfestival: ten days of music at the most beautiful spots in Amsterdam // through August 16
From August 7 to 16, Amsterdam once again transforms into one giant stage during the Grachtenfestival. Throughout the city, you can enjoy concerts in unique locations, from hidden courtyards and city parks to museums, rooftop gardens, and monumental buildings. Even if you wouldn't normally attend a classical concert, this festival is absolutely worth it.
The program features over 150 concerts with young talent from classical music and jazz. Some of the performances are free to attend, and it is precisely the combination of unique locations and accessible concerts that makes the Grachtenfestival one of our favorite summer events in Amsterdam year after year.

The Sunday market for a lovely afternoon with food trucks and local products.

Every Saturday, this is the place for your organic groceries, and on Mondays, you can shop for vintage, curiosities, and antiques.

Every Friday and Saturday, you can shop for fresh products here directly from local farmers, producers, and chefs. Think artisanal bread, vegetables, delicacies, and other local flavors and ingredients.

| NIGHT AWAY? Nothing is more fun than a weekend getaway in your own country. You can find lots of tips on Your Little Black Book, but you’ll want to keep these lists on your radar for the summer: hotels with outdoor swimming pool in the Netherlands, hotels and cottages by the sea, child-friendly hotels in the Netherlands.
Barbecuing in a park in Amsterdam? These are the places where it is allowed.
With beautiful summer weather, there is little more enjoyable than a barbecue with friends in the parkGood news: there are still plenty of places in Amsterdam where you can fire up the barbecue. Think of favorites like Oosterpark, Park Frankendael, Westerpark, the Amsterdamse Bos, and Gaasperplas. Do note, however: in some parks, barbecuing is only allowed in designated areas and additional rules apply.
Our advice? Bring a blanket, get fresh groceries at a market in the neighborhood and make it a long summer evening. Don't forget to clean everything up neatly afterwards, so that we can continue to enjoy these lovely spots for the rest of the summer.

My tip for a holiday feeling in your own city? Hop on a bike and follow the Amstel out of the city. In no time, you'll trade the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam for green meadows, winding bike paths, and pleasant stops along the way. On the way, you can pick fresh flowers at a picking garden, take a break at the Overamstel Farm, enjoy a glass of wine at the Amstel Vineyard, and finish your route with an extensive lunch or dinner in the cozy Ouderkerk aan de Amstel.

Take a trip with De Fluistervink in the Amsterdam Forest
Starting this week, you can once again step aboard the Fluistervink in the Amsterdamse Bos. Go on an adventure at Fort Island Pampus
Fort Island Pampus remains one of the nicest mini-day trips just outside the city. Just hop on a boat and you find yourself in the middle of the IJmeer on an island with plenty to discover. Wander through the fort, discover the stories behind this UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy the panoramic views. Believe me, this is an outing the kids will remember for a long time! More info >>
For the bucket list: the renovated ARTIS Aquarium
Good news for everyone who the iconic ARTIS Aquarium what you missed: the fully restored building and all its inhabitants can be visited again for a fascinating journey through the world of water.
In the renovated ARTIS Aquarium, you once again come face to face with colorful underwater life, but you also discover how important water is for all life on Earth. Through various spaces and interactive stories, you learn more about the vulnerability of underwater ecosystems, nature conservation, and the special connection between humans and nature. A visit to the aquarium is included with your entrance ticket for ARTIS.

Amsterdam has a new favorite. Behind 't Lemmeke is the same team as behind Wijmpje Beukers, Schotsheuvel, and De Zingende Zwaan, but this time it is all about the atmosphere of a classic British gastropub. Think candlelight, dark wooden accents, a cozy fireplace, and a friendly pub in the basement.
We tasted almost the entire menu and can tell you already: this is a place you'll want to visit again. Go for a snacky dinner with the surprisingly good snack menu, or share a table full of dishes with friends. Sharing is allowed, but certainly not required. And when the weather is nice, the terrace is a lovely spot to start or end the evening.

Le Petit Bouillon d'Amsterdam is now open in Amsterdam-Zuid
Good news for lovers of French cuisine: Le Petit Bouillon d'Amsterdam has officially opened its doors on Stadionweg in Amsterdam South. The newest addition to the Bouillon family features the same classic French atmosphere as the larger restaurant, but in a more intimate setting.
Also nice this summer: there is a sunny terrace. Do keep in mind, however, that you cannot make reservations there. A smaller menu featuring French snacks and bites is served on the terrace, while you can enjoy the full menu inside.

For fans of Japanese baked goods: Viral Japanese Bakery pop-up
Attention matcha lovers, shokupan fans, and everyone who regularly disappears into a TikTok rabbit hole of Japanese food videos. The Viral Japanese Bakery at PAINDEMIE has opened on Kinkerstraat featuring a whole host of Japanese bakery hits.
The menu includes fluffy Pain de Mie sandwiches, Japanese pastries, matcha treats, ice cream sandos, and the now-viral honey butter toast. You can also take home whole loaves of the popular Japanese milk bread. For those who love colorful drinks, Sakura Ice Cream Sodas are also served.

Nara Nara brings the flavors of Cairo to Dapperplein
A new restaurant has opened on Dapperplein that you will want to add to your list immediately. Nara Nara is the new project of chef Said, whom you might remember from Mana Mana. His Egyptian roots take center stage in his own restaurant, and the menu features delicious dishes meant for sharing. We had a lovely lunch there recently, and it immediately reminded me of our trip to Egypt in December.
The name Nara Nara refers to the Egyptian word for fire. A place where people come together for warmth, stories, connection, and good food. That idea also forms the basis of the restaurant, where dishes are meant to be placed in the center of the table and shared with friends and family.
Expect a menu full of Cairo flavors, Mediterranean influences, and something truly different from most places opening at the moment. Especially on Saturdays, I find this such a lovely spot to go for lunch with my family. Afterwards, just popping over to the market for groceries and fully enjoying Amsterdam.

Amsterdam-West has a new neighborhood bar. Café de Leven has just opened at Witte de Withstraat 153 and has everything it takes to become your new go-to for drinks. Think: a classic bar, but with a healthy dose of soul. Expect vinyl on the turntables and a program centered on music, culture, and the neighborhood.

Just opened: Café Publiek, new all-day spot on Dapperplein
Dapperplein has a new neighborhood favorite. Café Publiek has opened at Dapperplein 23 in Amsterdam East, where Local Dealer used to be. This is the place to go for everything a good neighborhood café should be: a spot for lunch, drinks, and dinner. They have a lovely large terrace, and inside, the café has a warm vibe with vintage items and dripping candles in wine bottles. LOVE IT! Currently, they are open from Friday through Sunday. Just opened: The Jollof Club is now on the Prinsengracht
This week, it’s finally happening again: The Jollof Club is opening at a new location in Amsterdam. The West African hotspot will be situated at Prinsengracht 955 for the coming months and is open for lunch and dinner. You can also enjoy an extensive snack menu at the bar.
The Jollof Club is the restaurant of chef Nicolas Aquaa, known for his modern take on West African cuisine. On the menu, you will find dishes inspired by flavors from Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal, among others, combined with an extensive wine list, cocktails, and a strong focus on culture and storytelling.

Another new hotspot has opened at Papaverhoek in Amsterdam North. At Bar How, it's all about natural wine, good snacks, vinyl records, and long evenings by the water. It's a place where you can go on Fridays from 4:00 PM for a glass of wine on the terrace in a corner of the city where you really want to hang out until late. Just opened: Café de Vos, new neighborhood café in Amsterdam West
Café de Vos has opened on Bilderdijkstraat. A new establishment that feels like it has been there for years. The atmosphere of a classic neighborhood pub, with a sunny terrace, a pool table, and an accessible place where you can go for lunch, drinks, or a tasty daily special. This place fits well into the line-up of modern brown pubs: fun, but above all relaxed and without too much fuss. More info >>
Just opened: Monne, a Mediterranean spot on the Amstel with a nice terrace
Restaurant Monne is now located on the Amsteldijk in the characteristic De Mirandapaviljoen (on the site where Amstel Boathouse used to be). At Monne, everything revolves around escaping the hustle and bustle of the city for a while. Thanks to its location directly on the water, with a spacious terrace overlooking the Amstel and even its own private jetty for boats, it indeed quickly feels like a mini-vacation.
The menu features Mediterranean dishes with an emphasis on seasonal products, and they work as circularly as possible. The menu is broad and accessible, and I think this place is perfect for a nice meal with the kids. The terrace, in any case, looks like the perfect spot for drinks, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. More info >>
Just opened: Omoka has a new pop-up location on a boat at the NDSM.
This week, yet another new spot for African cuisine! Omoka has opened a new pop-up location in Amsterdam North. From now on, you can find Omoka every weekend at Woodies at Berlin, a unique venue on a ship at the NDSM Wharf, opposite the Botel.
After previous pop-ups in the city, Omoka is now settling down at Ms. van Riemsdijkweg 306, where you can enjoy authentic African dishes, cocktails, wine, music, and a relaxed atmosphere by the water. Two wine bars alternating weekly at the same location! Love it.
The first tip: Zuiver Bar, the wine bar from the team behind Choux together with Zuiver Wijnen. Open from Wednesday to Friday from 5:00 PM. From Saturday to Monday, Nai!! Sake Bar takes over, and you can go there for sake.

Amsterdam-West has gained another great new spot. Meneer van Galen on Jan van Galenstraat has opened and feels like a neighborhood café that has been there for years. The new establishment comes from the team behind Bar Billie, and here too you can enjoy no-nonsense conviviality with craft beers, cocktails, wines, and an extensive snack menu. Just opened: Bonburger Noord
I was already a fan of Bonburger in West, but now you can eat these favorite burgers in North too. In the street where Bacalar is located. You can also make reservations at the second location in West, and they have a huge terrace. To me, the vibe is really Bushwick, NY. Think: old garage turned restaurant. You would almost think that it’s no longer possible in Amsterdam with all those regulations, but to see it with your own eyes, you just have to go to North ;-). More info >>
Just opened: De Poldervogel
This new neighborhood restaurant in Watergraafsmeer could very well become the new favorite of East Amsterdam. Behind the business are Lisa and Bart, a duo who gained experience at Restaurant de Kas and Vuurtoreneiland, among others, and are now bringing all that experience together in their own neighborhood restaurant.
On the menu? Refined comfort food with familiar flavors, but with just a little more finesse, dishes to share, seasonal produce, and even an off-menu dish for the kids. Don't feel like dealing with traffic jams on the way to the beach when the weather is nice? Then you'll want to check out the new Strand van Oost! This city beach is now open on the rooftop of Orchid House in Amsterdam East, overlooking Oosterpark.
Expect a relaxed beach vibe, but right in the middle of the city. Think beach chairs, beanbags, picnic tables, and even sand under your feet. With sunny spots all day long (and plenty of shade when it gets really hot), this is the perfect place for a long afternoon outdoors with friends or the kids.
The menu features accessible drinks and bites: pitchers of beer and cocktails, good wines, and snacks such as oysters, skewers, and bitterballen. A nice detail: there is happy hour every day from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. More info >>

In Amsterdam-Noord, there is a new fried chicken spot you'll want to put on your radar immediately: Sassy's, from the team behind Box Sociaal. You can find them in the Oedipus Craft Space, where it's all about crispy chicken, tasty sauces, and a beer to go with it.
The menu includes the 'Sass Sando' with juicy chicken thighs, house-made pickles, and ranch on a soft bun, but you can also have your chicken tossed in various sauces. They also have a lovely terrace! More info >>

There is a new spot on the Zuidas to keep on your radar: HORTA, a modern Spanish restaurant with good food and that typical Mediterranean feel. Behind the scenes is the team from NAZKA, taking a different approach here with a more casual, all-day concept from lunch to dinner.

Exciting news: De Vrouw met de Baard is opening a new spot by the water at Pakhuis de Zwijger. At this new restaurant, everything revolves around diaspora dishes, with influences from Indonesia, the Moluccas, China, Europe, Africa, and America. What can you expect? Dishes with a story, such as a miso buttered burger, Japanese potato salad with sesame dippy egg, and a silky tofu chocolate ganache with pandan.

There is a new spot in town for wine and charcuterie: Bar Copa sits right next to its big brother, Café Cenc, on the Vijzelgracht and is a fantastic place for drinks. It is a small bar, but that is exactly what makes it so great for a glass of wine with something tasty.
On the menu, you will find a selection of wines on tap and preserves from Mallorca, served in a cozy setting that is somewhat reminiscent of Bar Parry (from the same team). The centerpiece is an old marble butcher's counter, and there are a few small tables at the back of the establishment.

New to Marnixstraat, and believe me, you’ll want to know about this Provençal deli and wine shop. Imagine yourself in the South of France for a moment, right here in Amsterdam. They have delicious sandwiches and an equally good selection of cheeses and charcuterie. A nice spot to stop by to stock up your charcuterie board this weekend! From the team behind De Druif and Eetcafé De Reiger comes Eetcafé Van Beeren. With a no-nonsense menu featuring dishes that are perfect if you just want to eat well, but not too complicated or expensive. Think snacks like bitterballen and calamari, but also the fish of the day, entrecôte, and melanzane. No fuss and perfect for your next dinner date with a friend.
Just opened: Felix Café in Felix Meritis
A new spot has opened in the monumental Felix Meritis where you can drop in just as easily for a glass of wine as for dinner: Felix Café. Chef Sander Louwerens is in the kitchen, so expect seasonal dishes with pure flavors and a no-nonsense approach that fits the setting perfectly. What makes this place extra special is that you can combine a bite to eat with the programming of Felix Meritis.
Just opened: Java Kitchen
A new spot for Indonesian comfort food has opened in De Pijp: Java Kitchen. The menu features classics like rendang, soto kuning, and ayam dishes, served with rice and prawn crackers. You can also go there for snacks such as lemper and risolles, or a satay sandwich. Everything is halal and there are vegetarian options as well. Another nice new eatery to discover if you are in the mood for an affordable bite to eat.
Just opened: Jiji Taiwanese Fried Chicken
Maybe it's because I'm going to Taiwan for the first time soon for Your Little Black Book, but I'm completely obsessed with Taiwanese snacks. That works out well, because Jiji Taiwanese Fried Chicken just opened in the city center.
This is where you get that viral XL Taiwanese fried chicken that you see popping up everywhere on TikTok right now. Think: crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside, finished with various spice mixes like garlic, chili, and five spice. Also on the menu: popcorn chicken and even a mushroom version.
Just opened: Froda's
Another one of those spots you'll want to save immediately: Froda's has just opened in Amsterdam-West and is all about sourdough focaccia. This no-nonsense establishment comes from the people behind Pasta Bros, and everything here revolves around slow fermentation, good ingredients, and perfectly baked focaccia with an airy texture. You can find Froda's on De Clercqstraat, and both the 'meatball' and the 'aubergine' are delicious.
Just opened: Mastro Supplì
Another new spot in West that just opened is Mastro Supplì on Bilderdijkstraat. What can you get here? Supplì, the Roman street food snack that sits somewhere between a croquette and arancini. Crispy on the outside and filled with flavors like classic ragù, spicy 'nduja, or a surprising vegan variant. Everything is freshly prepared and fried to order, so count on that perfect crunch with every bite.
Just opened: BagelBoy on the Spui
Good news if you want to enjoy a tasty breakfast in the city center, because BagelBoy has now opened the doors of their new location on the Spui. At Spui 26, you can now get their famous bagels, with those creative cream cheese flavors that keep you coming back. I find their salmon bagel so delicious, but you really have to try the BEC sometime too.
Just opened: CHEZ CHLOÉ
New on the Overtoom: Chez Chloé. In the former location of Bar Kartel, you will now find a restaurant where modern French cuisine takes center stage. What I have seen so far looks delicious! In the kitchen is Chef Marcelo Hernandez, classically trained in French cuisine, together with a team you might know from spots like Entrepot and Bolenius. Expect refined dishes, fine wines, and an interior that truly makes you feel like you are in a chic Parisian restaurant. More info >>
