what do we celebrate with thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! But what are we actually celebrating on Thanksgiving?

November 27 2025

Turkey, pumpkin pie, family, friends, and tables overflowing with platters of delicious food. I'm talking about Thanksgiving! One of the most important American holidays, perhaps just as important to them as celebrating Christmas. In the Netherlands (especially in Amsterdam), you're increasingly seeing restaurants and caterers cater to this by catering to the expat community and locals with dual citizenship. From ordering a turkey to restaurants serving turkey specifically for Thanksgiving, the tradition of Thanksgiving is slowly making its way to the Netherlands. But what exactly is celebrated on Thanksgiving Day? And what are the takeaways from this tradition that we should adopt because it's actually a beautiful thing? In this article, I'll explain it as best I can.

MOOD 👀, I woke up really early today and was scrolling through my photos of Bangkok 🌴. Then I thought: how nice if we share our booked and wishlist destinations for inspiration? I have a safari in Malawi & Zimbabwe 🐆 in the books with a stopover in Nairobi. I'm also going to Paris for a few nights by train with Manuel. So excited! I'm going to visit all the Parisian clichés and more with him ✌🏼. Also on the wishlist: China (May holiday), a midweek trip to Athens & the coast (summer), London (always a good idea), Amalfi & Rome (Manuel's dream for the autumn holiday) & Japan (Christmas holiday including skiing, tips welcome ☺️). My resolution for 2026 is also to plan more fun day trips/nights away in the Netherlands. And I would love to go to Japan solo, but oh well... first I have to get back to work 😅😉. Speaking of which: Happy new week!! I'd love to dream about your travel plans. 😘 🖊️ @anne_de_buck
NEW YEAR'S DAY IN THE NETHERLANDS 🖤 March = the month in which my favorite Sunday markets start up again in full swing. So my Sunday plans are quickly made: stroll along stalls, discover new food trucks and go home with a bag full of organic produce or a great vintage find. What I like about it? Every market has its own vibe. • @feelgoodmarket for creativity and live music in Eindhoven • Vintage heaven at @ijhallen • @sundaymarket with creative makers and food trucks • Curated vintage & design gems at @cabinetamsterdam • @fairpricedvintage for scoring vintage clothing at many locations in NL Have fun! ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck Follow @yourlbb for the best markets, restaurants, travel guides and more tips to make the most of your free time. #zondagmarkt #markteninnederland #vintagemarket #weekendtips #yourlittleblackbook
If you only go to one terrace in Amsterdam this weekend, make it @caferestaurant.meyer! What a great addition to the Amstelveld 😍. Open from 10am, a very nice lunch menu, a wine list with a bottle of rosé for €20, but also olive ice cream with caviar (incredibly delicious!). I'll be back soon to try the evening menu too. Tip: you can make a reservation on the terrace! And did I mention there's a playground next door? Have a great weekend 😘 🖊️ @anne_de_buck PS: follow @yourlbb & @yourlbb.amsterdam for more Amsterdam tips and travel guides for destinations around the world. ___________________________________________ Best terrace in Amsterdam, best new terrace in Amsterdam, lunch in amsterdam, family friendly amsterdam
My fav spot for freddo cappuccino in Amsterdam that transports me back to Greece. Add a slice of spanakopita and you have the best breakfast to enjoy along the Amstel river. My motto for the coming spring is to take more walks, so expect a lot of recs for coffee and other drinks to go in this new series! ☀️ Where should I go next? ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck
**Due to COVID-19, souvenirs are now available in bulk ❄️ Note to self: always keep room in your suitcase for 'souvenirs'. During my ski trip to Méribel, I popped into the local pharmacy just before leaving, and these are the beauty products I took home. I've tested them extensively and they're all more than YLBB-approved. Save them for your next trip to France (or your online beauty store). Which souvenirs always make it back in your suitcase? I'm curious! ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck PS: Follow @yourlbb for tons of tips to make the most of your free time — from travel tips to travel guides and more.

What's the story behind celebrating Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day is the day when Americans celebrate the good things in life and reflect on the things they're grateful for. I think it's a truly good thing to do and perfectly aligns with a more mindful and conscious approach to life. This holiday falls on the fourth Thursday of November every year and is celebrated primarily in the United States and by American expats worldwide.

The origins of Thanksgiving date back to 1621, when English pilgrims settled in Massachusetts and celebrated the bounty of the harvest. It wasn't until 1864 that Thanksgiving became a national holiday for all Americans. President Abraham Lincoln, in office, wanted to establish a day of thanksgiving during the American Civil War. It was to be a day to reflect on the good things of everyday life and express gratitude to God. Today, Thanksgiving is a widely celebrated holiday, even for those who aren't religious. It's about being together with family or friends, being grateful for what you have, or doing something extra for those less fortunate. Thanksgiving is a day of conscious reflection. On the other hand, Thanksgiving, like all other holidays, has become a very important commercial period for entrepreneurs.

What do Black Friday and Thanksgiving have in common?

The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday And that's traditionally the day Americans start their Christmas shopping. Many stores offer discounts of up to 70%. Due to the enormous crowds on this day and the high turnover for businesses, it eventually became known as "Black Friday." Do you still need clothing, household appliances, or do you want to book a vacation? Stores like Sissy Boy, HEMA, H&M, funq, travel bags They all participate. But also, for example, Booking.com en Sunweb They have some really good deals for holidays. Still need an expensive vacuum cleaner, for example, or a new hand blender? Chances are you can find them at a significant discount during Black Friday, both online and in stores. But don't forget the small local businesses who can't afford to participate in Black Friday. I make conscious choices about what I buy and where, and I hope you do too.

Which online stores in the Netherlands often participate in Black Friday? I've compiled a list of over 40 stores where you can shop with discounts.

How do Americans celebrate Thanksgiving?

Today, Thanksgiving remains a popular national holiday, though its meaning has changed considerably over the years. The Christian aspect no longer plays a role for most celebrants, while commercialism has entered the picture.
For most Americans, spending time with family and enjoying a hearty meal is the main focus of Thanksgiving these days. Delicious food and a good time are paramount at this popular holiday, with turkey usually being served as the main course.

Why do people eat turkey on Thanksgiving?

Eating poultry is first mentioned in the diaries of the early Pilgrims who traveled to America. Gratitude for the good harvest was central to this. During that period, the wild turkey was a common bird in North America. Moreover, the bird is so large that it can be a feast for an entire family. A tradition that originated, and turkey is still eaten in America between Thanksgiving and Christmas, has been common practice. Since President J.F. Kennedy came to power, it has been customary for the president to pardon any live turkey that does not end up on the Thanksgiving table. Since then, the national holiday has also been known as Turkey Day.

What other Thanksgiving traditions are there?

Besides the abundant food, other traditions surrounding Thanksgiving emerged. In several major cities, including New York, a large parade is held annually on Thanksgiving Day. Thousands of spectators admire the magnificent floats, marching bands, and dancers. Another tradition is that many families watch an American football game before enjoying dinner as a family. All of these occasions celebrate togetherness and connection.

Have you ever celebrated Thanksgiving? Perhaps with international friends?
