Turkey, pumpkin pie, family, friends, and tables overflowing with platters of delicious food. I'm talking about Thanksgiving! One of the most important American holidays, perhaps just as important to them as celebrating Christmas. In the Netherlands (especially in Amsterdam), you're increasingly seeing restaurants and caterers cater to this by catering to the expat community and locals with dual citizenship. From ordering a turkey to restaurants serving turkey specifically for Thanksgiving, the tradition of Thanksgiving is slowly making its way to the Netherlands. But what exactly is celebrated on Thanksgiving Day? And what are the takeaways from this tradition that we should adopt because it's actually a beautiful thing? In this article, I'll explain it as best I can.

First of all: thank you for being here to close out 2025 <3.
2025, you were everything I hoped you would be and more. So many new memories.
I don't yet know what 2026 will bring, but last year was one for the books. Highlights included trips to China, Mexico City, Egypt, and exploring the English countryside.
Entrepreneurs probably recognize that 2025 was not an easy year.
When I started Your Little Black Book, I had one dream: not to work to stay somewhere for free in exchange for content and the pressure of a "picture perfect" experience. But to use my revenue models to book and experience those special places myself, as a guest instead of an influencer, and to give you honest tips.
After almost 15 years of entrepreneurship, I'm so happy with the balance between editorial and commercial work and that I can also say no to things that don't feel right.
At the same time, it's still special that destinations, airlines, and hotels hire me to create a customized Little Black Book for them. I have complete freedom with these campaigns, and I believe in the value of these content-based tips that truly suit your taste. And they come from me personally, not from a machine.
So thank you for your support when you see #yourlbbcollab, #pressstrip or #prinvited ;-).
This will always be my dream job, the one I created almost 15 years ago. I still do as much as possible myself. That's energizing—from both successes and failures.
Luckily, I have a small team that helps with certain sections, and this year we're going through all the tips critically. What's still truly fun, and what's not?
As a leisure expert and queen of curation, I'm so excited to take yourlittleblackbook.me to the next level. Even though being an online entrepreneur requires constant attention and doesn't always come naturally, I wouldn't want anything else.
My mission remains: making your life easier.
So you don't have to search, but can simply choose well.
So glad you were here this year. Without you, there would be no Your Little Black Book 🖤
See you in 2026!
With love,
@anne_de_buck

I have always been part of the family and have always been proud of my work. I have a nice garden in my garden 🗝️👀
Mark your calendars! Because on January 17th and 18th, Hotel Night returns to Amsterdam with a year-round event packed with health and wellness events, and of course, legendary parties you'll be talking about all year long.
I got a sneak peek at The Art of Balance theme at the luxurious Anantara Krasnapolsky and arranged a similarly special experience for you as a YLBB follower.
And in my opinion:
• overnight stay for 2 people in a luxury room on January 17, 2026
• access to the spa & wellness (subject to availability via the wellness desk)
• pre-dinner cocktail at Bar The Tailor
• fully catered dinner from the chef
• passe-partouts for the Hotel Night parties
• extensive breakfast in the Winter Garden
• participation in unique Ice Experience in Krasnapolsky Summergarden
And in Flanders:
• let us know who you would like to check in with at Anantara Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky during the Mastercard Hotel Night
• download the Mastercard Hotel Night app where you can see the complete program
• and take a look at @hotelnacht and @anantarakrasnapolsky for the latest updates and to get the fun started!
The winner will be notified on January 5th in a comment from @hotelnacht that I will share in my stories.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Love,
Anne

PS: Who recognizes this Christmas tree? 👀

Thanksgiving Day is the day when Americans celebrate the good things in life and reflect on the things they're grateful for. I think it's a truly good thing to do and perfectly aligns with a more mindful and conscious approach to life. This holiday falls on the fourth Thursday of November every year and is celebrated primarily in the United States and by American expats worldwide.
The origins of Thanksgiving date back to 1621, when English pilgrims settled in Massachusetts and celebrated the bounty of the harvest. It wasn't until 1864 that Thanksgiving became a national holiday for all Americans. President Abraham Lincoln, in office, wanted to establish a day of thanksgiving during the American Civil War. It was to be a day to reflect on the good things of everyday life and express gratitude to God. Today, Thanksgiving is a widely celebrated holiday, even for those who aren't religious. It's about being together with family or friends, being grateful for what you have, or doing something extra for those less fortunate. Thanksgiving is a day of conscious reflection. On the other hand, Thanksgiving, like all other holidays, has become a very important commercial period for entrepreneurs.
The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday And that's traditionally the day Americans start their Christmas shopping. Many stores offer discounts of up to 70%. Due to the enormous crowds on this day and the high turnover for businesses, it eventually became known as "Black Friday." Do you still need clothing, household appliances, or do you want to book a vacation? Stores like Sissy Boy, HEMA, H&M, funq, travel bags They all participate. But also, for example, Booking.com en Sunweb They have some really good deals for holidays. Still need an expensive vacuum cleaner, for example, or a new hand blender? Chances are you can find them at a significant discount during Black Friday, both online and in stores. But don't forget the small local businesses who can't afford to participate in Black Friday. I make conscious choices about what I buy and where, and I hope you do too.
Which online stores in the Netherlands often participate in Black Friday? I've compiled a list of over 40 stores where you can shop with discounts.
View the Black Friday overview here
Today, Thanksgiving remains a popular national holiday, though its meaning has changed considerably over the years. The Christian aspect no longer plays a role for most celebrants, while commercialism has entered the picture.
For most Americans, spending time with family and enjoying a hearty meal is the main focus of Thanksgiving these days. Delicious food and a good time are paramount at this popular holiday, with turkey usually being served as the main course.
Eating poultry is first mentioned in the diaries of the early Pilgrims who traveled to America. Gratitude for the good harvest was central to this. During that period, the wild turkey was a common bird in North America. Moreover, the bird is so large that it can be a feast for an entire family. A tradition that originated, and turkey is still eaten in America between Thanksgiving and Christmas, has been common practice. Since President J.F. Kennedy came to power, it has been customary for the president to pardon any live turkey that does not end up on the Thanksgiving table. Since then, the national holiday has also been known as Turkey Day.
Besides the abundant food, other traditions surrounding Thanksgiving emerged. In several major cities, including New York, a large parade is held annually on Thanksgiving Day. Thousands of spectators admire the magnificent floats, marching bands, and dancers. Another tradition is that many families watch an American football game before enjoying dinner as a family. All of these occasions celebrate togetherness and connection.
Have you ever celebrated Thanksgiving? Perhaps with international friends?
