As some of you may know, I live in the neighborhood of Amsterdam East close to the Amstel River. This is a great area to live if you love going on walks! Only following the Amstel will lead me to nature or within 15 minutes right into the heart of the city center. The East side of the Centre is a unique hidden gem of the city.Amsterdam Oostenburg was a place which was where Amsterdam Roost used to be located. When I first moved here it felt a bit like living at the NDSM wharf (byAmsterdam North there is also a walking route). Today this part of the Eastern Center has been completely renovated. When you go on this walk you will be surprised on the industrial feeling it still gives to you. And donโt worry I will of course always tell you where you can get something tasty on the way and what is nice and best to look out for!

diverse walking route through the east of amsterdam
How well do you think you know the East side of the Amsterdam Centre? I have mapped out a walking route just for you of my favorite hotspots near my home. Keep a close eye on the developments around lockdowns, it may be that some locations are unfortunately still closed. This walk is just over 7 kilometers, depending on the routes you take. It’s best to always view the locations via Google Maps to Cath the best route from A to B. I will of course also give you the best possible description of the streets that are best to take. Have fun!
lets start the walking tour through amsterdam east
The noble Plantation Neighborhood
You can start the route in a few different places near the Sarphatistraat. For example at the Bakhuys, where they not only have delicious bread and pastries but where you can also grab a coffee to go. Another starting point could be Yusu, a new coffee hotspot at the HvA (Andreas Bonnstraat 2). If you start at Bakhuys, you walk into the Sarphatistraat towards the Roeterstraat ย and turn left. If you start atย Yusu, you will go via the bridge over the water at the Mauritskade to the Spinozastraat and you cross the Sarphatistraat into the Roeterstraat. At The Roeterstraat you will walk all the way through until you see the Coffee Company just on the left corner. Here you turn left. Along the way you will come across several nice tents that do take-away, such as: Oleg Pelmeni, T food and drink and The Pizza Bakers.
If you walk out of the Plantage Muidergracht ย you will get into the back of the Hortus Botanicus. Turn right into the Plantage Parklaan and just down the road you will find the entrance to the Wertheim Park. Walk towards the water and there you will find a path that you can walk up to Slatjesbrug. There you already have a view of Entrepotdock and the Laagte Kadijk. That’s where you walk through the Nieuwe Herengracht.

Burgers and Scheepvaart
Burgers and Scheepvart
When entering the Scharrebiersluis ย (the bridge) you walk towards the Kadijksplein and the Laagte Kadijk. Nearby you will find different addresses for something to eat and drink, all with different opening hours.ย Sottoย for pizza, Bakers & Roasters for a nice brunch, but the lockdown spot you really shouldn’t skip is In Between Burgers.ย Here you can get a delicious smash burger that you can then eat on a bench at the Warehouse Dock. In Between Burgers is at the ‘backdoor’ ofย Restaurant Entrepot (Laagte Kadijk 1). Last summer I ate at their pop-up on the terrace of Carrรฉ and I am really looking forward to joining them again as soon as possible.ย In Between Burgers, offers take-away from Wednesday to Sunday and is open on weekends from noon onwards. This is a perfect spot for a delicious lunch just like we did during this walk! We ordered the ‘normal’ burger and the Venison burger, and did 50/50 (extra napkins handy, because fingerlicking good). Good to know: there is also a veggie burger. After you have eaten your burger calmly, you walk back towards ย Kadijkspleinย and the Maritime Museum.

Marineterrein & kades
The walk through Amsterdam East continues past the Maritime Museum and the Nemo. Have you ever been to the Naval Field? ย Especially in good weather it is a lovely place to picnic by the water. You can even swim there! At Pension Homeland, they now have ย homemade doughnuts every Wednesday and Sunday during the lockdown. Arrived at The Ship Camel you are now at the perfect place to get some pies which you can warm up at home for dinner. They also have a menu, but you will have to order from them in advance (take-away do-so from 4pm-8pm). Via the ย Kattenburgerstraatย you walk towards the Piet Heinkade. You’ll cross over to the Veemkade. If you’re looking for a nice hotel, a staycation in Amsterdam, remember the Hotel Jakarta. They have a lovely spa and a restaurant with very good Indonesian food. It is also one of the greenest hotels! From the Veemkade you can see it lying across the street. Walk down the Veemkade along the water towards the Rietlandpark and just before at the Happyhappyjoyjoy get onto the Piet Heinkade again. The following street to discover will be the Czaar Peterstraat.

Czaar Peterstraat & Oostenburg
I always find the Czaar Peterstraat to be a bit of a forgotten street. And that although there are a lot of hidden gems: nice tents and specialty shops. You will also find many workshops by local makers. In terms of catering, there is plenty to do in Oostenburg. Amsterdam Roest is now being renovated and they will (hopefully) reopen later this year. Rumour has it that there will also be a new restaurant in Rosa & Rita. ย On the Czaar Peterstraat itself Kapari ย and ย Baretto ย are the spots to remember. The best cheese for home can be found at ย KEF ย which is also located here. And do you know the concept store CP113? A common shout in this street for years. If the shops are open definitely go back once. Then you will experience how the street really comes to life! At the end of the Czaar Peterstraat you cross now to the Zeeburgerstraat. There you have a nice view of ‘the mill’. Remember for nice weather: ย The Cup of East with a fine terrace and ย Brewboys Bar.

Dappermarkt & Oosterpark
Continue towards the Dapperstraat and simply switch off. From Monday to Saturday the market is held here and is always busy at good weather. Are you here one day when the market is on? Then buy yourself some tasty items for home or treat yourself with a bowl of kibbeling from the fishmonger! Walk down the market to the First van Swindenstraat ย and turn right towards the Oosterpark. The Oosterpark was renovated a few years ago. On the edge of the park you will find several nice hotspots, such as: Five Brothers Fat,ย Louie Louieย and Bar Bukowksi. In oosterpark, The Generator Hostel is open for take-away. After the Oosterpark you cross to the Andreas Bonnstraat ย and you end up again at Yusu or the ย Weesperpleinย near Bakhuys where the route started.
