14 X Spotting Fly Agaric Mushrooms in the Netherlands: these are the tips & tricks

October 15, 2025

Last year I spotted so many red mushrooms with white spots. And I have to admit: that feels extra special during a walk! Especially because you don't see them everywhere and the weather conditions have a big influence. During a weekend in Schoorl We went on a guided mushroom walk, which is always a lot of fun to do (with kids).

When can you spot mushrooms?

Are you annoyed when it rains in autumn? When it comes to mushroom spotting, you'll have to be happy with drizzly autumn weather from now on! This means you can spot fly agarics again in various places in the Netherlands. Fly agarics is the official name for the iconic red and white spotted mushrooms that capture the imagination of young and old.

Where can you find the fly agaric in the Netherlands?

Anyone who thinks spotting the fly agaric is a matter of luck is mistaken. There are four areas in the Netherlands where you have an especially good chance of seeing the red-and-white caps suddenly appear among the autumn leaves: De Bilt, the Kennemerduinen, the Veluwe, and the Staphorst Forestry. Going on a search elsewhere? Then look out for birch, pine, spruce, oak, and beech trees. The fly agaric lives in symbiosis with these tree species!

14 Places to Spot the Fly Agaric in the Netherlands

Curious where fly agarics have been spotted this year and last year? I've received a lot of feedback from readers and have compiled all these tips:

  • Schoorlse Dunes (Also check out my guide for a weekend in Schoorl here)
  • Radio Kootwijk
  • Postbank
  • Twiske
  • The Green Forest
  • Limburg Peel
  • Boardwalk Epe
  • Ermelo (near the sheepfold)
  • Drunen Dunes
  • Star Forest
  • Cape Forests
  • Utrechtse Heuvelrug
  • Vijlenerbos
  • Sallandse Heuvelrug near the Holterberg

And did you know this about the Fly Agaric?

Have you spotted any fly agarics this fall? How big were they? On average, a fly agaric grows between 7 and 15 cm tall, and the characteristic red cap is usually between 5 and 15 cm. And as beautiful as that cap looks, don't forget that the fly agaric is poisonous. Touching it isn't a problem, but if you eat one, you can become quite ill. Going for a walk with your dog? Be careful: a small dog that eats a whole fly agaric doesn't always survive. And did you know that rain eventually washes off the white spots on the fly agaric? If it's been raining heavily for a week, head to the woods as soon as it's dry, and who knows, you might spot fly agarics this year. Have fun!
