4 surprising ski areas in Salzburgerland where you can do more than just skiing

We've decided: this winter we're going skiing in Austria! To choose the perfect ski area in SalzburgerLand, I examined eight different resorts. Winter sports are a regular fixture for me and one of my favorite winter traditions. I've been skiing since I was three, and I'm really looking forward to continuing this family tradition with my own son. I've previously written about extensive blog post about four top ski areas which are particularly suitable for families or for advanced skiers.

In this guide I will tell you all about St. John, high king, Hohe Tauern National Park en Salzburger SportweltEach of these ski resorts offers something extra besides beautiful slopes, such as activities for non-skiing companions or for those who want to try unique new snow activities. Are you planning a winter sports trip for this season? I hope you'll find the inspiration you're looking for in this guide.

| Extra fun: to start the new year off right, you have a chance to win one of eight all-inclusive winter sports holidays for two. Find out exactly how to enter at the bottom of this blog post!

𝗔 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗳𝗲́ 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆? @eetcafe_de_reiger is the spot to remember. Cozy, casual, and a seasonal menu. This one was on my list to share for a year and finally it's (almost) asparagus season again! 🤤 Another plus? Prices are very reasonable here! 📍 Eetcafé de Reiger Jordaan, Amsterdam City Center Save this spot for when you're craving warm Dutch traditional dishes in the heart of Amsterdam. And did you hear the same team took over Eetcafé van Beeren? I can't wait to go there too! ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck
A grandma's cookbook. Three Michelin stars. And a beautiful 70s villa in a quiet neighborhood in Bangkok, where you are welcomed as if you were at the chefs' home. The Sühring brothers don't cook based on trends; they cook based on memories. Of their grandmother's farm, of the flavors of their youth in Germany, and of techniques passed down through generations. @relaischateaux invited me to experience Sühring during a solo lunch, and this is truly my ultimate definition of culinary self-care. This was a surprising afternoon in Bangkok, where I ate the best German food I have ever tasted. And that in a city where I normally avoid European restaurants. Well, for @restaurant_suhring, you really want to make that exception. Signature dishes that I still think back to regularly? 🍴 Labskaus with caviar 🍴 Enleta waffle with Pfalz vinegar 🍴 Game pâté 🍴 Dry-aged Duck TIP: When you go to Sühring, reserve seats at the kitchen bar so you have a view of the chefs at work! This is one of the best free outings in the spring! Did you know that you can gather (or pick, for the connoisseurs 😉) oysters yourself at various locations in the Netherlands? I’m in Zeeland for a bit this weekend, and if we can make it, we’ll go again. 📍In this video, I show you where you can fill your bucket. Comment *oester* for the comprehensive guide with all the details about all 8 locations + handy tips and rules. Important to know: – Max. 10 kilos per person (≈ 1 bucket) – For personal use only – Do not scoop or scrape the seabed – Go at low tide Handy things to bring: Bucket, screwdriver, boots, work gloves, tea towel, clean clothes, and garbage bags (for the oysters *and* dirty clothes). And of course: bring an oyster knife, lemon, and champagne too 🍋🥂 Because you’ll want to taste something right away, won’t you! The oyster season runs from September to about April / early May, so now that the water isn't so cold, this is the perfect outing. In the full guide, I share exactly where you can easily find them, without much effort. Comment oyster and I'll send it to you right away! 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 These are those few magical weeks each year when the city suddenly feels different. Everything is in bloom and all you want to do is be outside. Get to the slopes in no time by plane

I always find driving a winter sports holiday a very cozy road trip, but if you have fewer vacation days, flying is much more relaxing. You can also go skiing for a long weekend, for example! This entire winter season, there are daily direct flights with Transavia from Amsterdam and Rotterdam to Salzburg. Flights depart from Eindhoven five times a week.

Also visit the city of Salzburg

Anyone who's read the Your Little Black Book travel guides knows how much fun it is to combine multiple destinations in a single trip. I call it a trip-within-a-trip. If you're going on a winter sports holiday to SalzburgerLand, a visit to the city of Salzburg is highly recommended. It boasts a beautiful historic center, restaurants serving delicious regional dishes, and surprisingly charming shops.

Winter sports facts about SalzburgerLand

In my previous blog I've already told you a few things about SalzburgerLand, this region in Austria. For those who this blog If you haven't read this, here are some highlights that are good to know when choosing a (new) ski area.

SalzburgerLand comprises 22 different ski areas with a total of over 2.000 kilometers of slopes. Almost all slopes are guaranteed snow, as 90% of them can be covered with artificial snow if natural snowfall is less than optimal. Frequent winter sports enthusiasts know what this means: the slopes are always in top condition!

Austria is, of course, known for its lively après-ski scene, but SalzburgerLand is also ideal for young families or those who enjoy winter sports but aren't necessarily skiing. Besides skiing and snowboarding, there's plenty to do, such as spotting wildlife during a snowshoe hike with a ranger or taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the wintry landscape.

As you know, I also attach great importance to beautiful (and especially cozy, during winter sports) accommodations for Your Little Black Book. SalzburgerLand has plenty of those too! From wonderful wellness hotels to chalets and apartments suitable for the whole family, a group of colleagues, or that annual ski trip with your friends.

Do you already know the ski areas of St. Johann, Hochkönig, Hohe Tauern National Park and Salzburger Sportwelt?

As promised, I'm also sharing the highlights from my research on various ski resorts in this winter travel guide. To save you time, I've compiled some insider tips on four beautiful areas!

St. Johann in Salzburg: ski area closest to the airport

Are you looking for a ski area close to Salzburg Airport? Then St. John Salzburg is a perfect match. This ski resort is located about 60 kilometers south of Salzburg, making it easy to combine with an afternoon in the city. You can get there in about an hour! With 120 kilometers of slopes, this area is perfect for true ski fanatics. But it's also perfect if you're a good skier yourself and want to go on a winter sports holiday with your kids. For young children and beginners, St. Johann's "local mountain" is a perfect place to learn to ski. You can take your first steps there for free. As I mentioned before, I always go on a winter sports holiday with the whole family. Now that my parents are skiing less, it makes you look at a ski resort differently. What else is there to do in this winter wonderland? For example, a horse-drawn carriage ride or, for the daredevils, a toboggan run. Another thing that I think is becoming increasingly popular is ski touring, where you walk uphill on skis fitted with special skins and then ski back down. St. Johann is also known for its good selection of shops. From authentic to the most modern sportswear. Perfect for when you finish skiing a little early one afternoon.

Hochkönig: connected to the Ski amadé ski area

Hochkönig is part of the Ski amadé ski area. With a single ski pass, you have access to the entire Ski amadé region, with 760 kilometers of slopes, 270 modern lifts, and 356 well-groomed slopes for all levels. The Hochkönig ski area itself consists of the villages of Maria Alm, Dienten, and Mühlbach, and boasts 120 kilometers of slopes! One of the ski area's highlights is the ultra-modern 10-person cable car in Dienten, which opened this winter sports season. There are several beautiful routes to ski, but the Königstour is an absolute must. This 35-kilometer ski tour connects the villages of Maria Alm, Dienten, and Mühlbach. What makes this ski area so charming is the many traditional ski huts where you can choose local specialties or traditional Austrian favorites like schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn. Vegetarians and vegans are also well catered for; It is the only certified vegan region in Austria. End your day with high king Finish with a drink and some tasty snacks while enjoying the beautiful view from your lounge chair at one of the Sundowner ski huts.

Hohe Tauern National Park: skiing in a protected nature reserve

Are you a nature lover? Then the Hohe Tauern National Park ski area is a perfect match. Covering 1.800 square kilometers, it's the largest protected area in the Eastern Alps. It boasts 266 mountains over 3.000 meters high, 551 mountain lakes, and 342 glaciers! And in the south of SalzburgerLand, you'll find 19 villages. Well-known areas include the Kitzbühel and Zillertal Alps, and you'll also find the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain, at 3.797 meters. It's clear: Hohe Tauern National Park This is the perfect area for anyone who wants to enjoy peace and quiet and beautiful nature during their winter sports holiday. Besides snowshoe hikes and various excursions, you can also observe wildlife in this area. Personally, I think that's a great idea! At a specially created spot in the Habachtal Valley, you can observe red deer and roe deer being fed through a panoramic window. Or go on an adventurous snowshoe hike into nature with a park ranger. Together, the eight ski resorts there offer 870 kilometers of slopes and around 260 lifts. In Mittersill, you can visit the National Park Centre where you can learn all about the natural environment and the animals that live there.

Salzburger Sportwelt: in the heart of Ski amadé

Are you looking for a ski resort in Austria's largest ski area, Ski amadé? This ski area consists of seven resorts: Flachau, Wagrain-Kleinarl, St. Johann, Radstadt, Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Eben, and Filzmoos. You'll find perfectly groomed slopes, snow parks, and the opportunity to try out new and trendy mountain sports. What can I tell you about this ski area in a nutshell? Flachau is home to three ski areas: Snow Space Salzburg with its wonderfully wide slopes, the challenging ski and freeride paradise of Zauchensee-Flachauwinkl, and Flachauwinkl-Kleinarl with its Absolut Park. St. Johann is part of Snow Space Salzburg, as are the Flachau and Wagrain ski areas. Kids can have a blast on the fun slopes and tubes on the adventure mountains of WAGRAINI's Winterwelt and the Geisterberg in St. Johann. The small and very manageable ski area in Eben is perfect for families, with an adventure mountain called Monte Popolo for the kids. Recently, you can also take a ski touring route in Eben. A fun fact: Radstadt is the home of many top Austrian skiers, with 17 kilometers of runs and a floodlit toboggan run. Freeriders can indulge themselves in the World Cup resort of Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. Altenmarkt itself is a pleasant, friendly village. And finally, to conclude these tips about Salzburger Sportwelt The village of Filzmoos. Here you'll find a small but lovely ski area at the Rossbrand, where you can enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride, among other things. A bonus: from January 11th to 18th, 2020, you can attend the 41st Dopgas Balloon Trophy in Filzmoos, a magnificent hot air balloon spectacle.
