Upcoming neighborhoods

15 tips to spot the best upcoming neighborhoods around the world

An urban nomad is always looking for upcoming neighborhoods!

The great thing about cities is that they're always evolving. Something new opens almost every day, and a true nomad is always on the lookout for up-and-coming neighborhoods. There are up-and-coming neighborhoods that are still wild, and there are trendy neighborhoods that were once up-and-coming and wild, but now everyone loves to visit.

For example, Bushwick in New York and Hackney in London are still up-and-coming, while Williamsburg in New York and Shoreditch in London are no longer up-and-coming, but they're still very hip and, above all, fun to explore. The appeal of these neighborhoods is enormous, and as an urban nomad, there's nothing more fun than going there to discover new things.

With these 15 tips from my book Wanderlust, you'll soon be able to spot the best up-and-coming neighborhoods all over the world.

15 tips to spot upcoming neighborhoods

  1. Old buildings, such as warehouses or factories, are transformed into restaurants, shops and markets.
  2. You will find galleries of young artists.
  3. There are underground parties (in precisely those warehouses and factories that have not yet been renovated).
  4. Spot pop-up stores and indoor markets where entrepreneurs collectively sell their brands in mini shop-in-shops.
  5. Young families with children are moving into more spacious and (still) affordable houses.
  6. Barbers, yoga schools, tattoo shops and organic food stores do brisk business there (can you feel the contrast?).
  7. Each restaurant's interior is cooler than the last. In up-and-coming neighborhoods, a few entrepreneurs are the first to dare to open a trendy spot. Soon, many more will follow once the neighborhood truly becomes hot.
  8. Makers in the food industry, such as micro-coffee roasters and craft beer brewers, are opening their first businesses there.
  9. There's at least a farmers market or food (truck) market on the weekend. With a bit of luck, there might even be an indoor food market in one of the industrial buildings.
  10. You'll find many restaurant concepts that respond to current food trends, such as taquerias (for the tastiest tacos), cevicherias, and Asian burger joints serving baos.
  11. Concept stores sell the most beautiful items from local designers and international brands.
  12. Also fun: there's a good chance you'll encounter two-in-one concepts. A coffee shop where you can also get your bike repaired, or a shop where you can also have lunch.
  13. Drinks can be enjoyed on a rooftop, at (speak-easy) cocktail bars or local craft beer cafes.
  14. You can stay in a boutique hotel with a personal interior or in a design hostel.
  15. With a bit of luck, the neighborhood will be decorated with the most beautiful street art!
