The newest Asian addition to Amsterdam is the unique Umami by Han Amsterdam on the Overtoom. Owner Han Ji might be familiar to you from the Michelin-starred restaurant HanThing Cuisine in The Hague, or from the other Umami restaurants you'll find in Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Maastricht, and even Beijing. Three of these restaurants have been awarded a Bib Gourmand by Michelin. That's promising!
We probably don't need to explain where the name Umami by Han comes from. Umami is, of course, the fifth basic taste, along with sweet, sour, etc., and is widely used in Asia. Umami can also be described as "savory" or "bouillon-like." Think of ingredients like seaweed, soy sauce, and mushrooms. Han is, of course, the renowned Michelin-starred chef ;-)

Okay, the menu! At Umami by Han Amsterdam, you can find Asian fusion dishes with a unique twist. You can order sauerkraut with saffron, or even farmed smooth shark fillet... Yep, really! And also crispy soft-shell crab, chicken meatballs, and scallops. Beetroot with Chinese pork belly, salmon with rice, and green beans with piccalilli. Unique, didn't I say? But delicious!
Great: each dish on the menu is accompanied by a wine list. Saves you the stress of choosing ;-) And all dishes are shareable—we love shared dining!
No time for a leisurely dinner at Umami by Han Amsterdam? Then opt for the 40-minute lunch or an Asian afternoon tea with friends.
