1 >> Visa >> Cape Verde travel tips

You need a visa for Cape Verde. You can arrange this in advance or simply at the border. Cost? €25 per person, and you can pay in euros or by credit card.

2 >> Money, money, money >> SAL TRAVEL GUIDE

Feel free to bring your euros to Cape Verde, as you can pay with them virtually everywhere. Most restaurant menus are even in euros. A summer cocktail starts at €4,50. Wine prices are about the same as in the Netherlands. At the restaurants we ate at, appetizers cost between €6 and €14, and most main courses ranged from €13 to €30.

3 >> Hotels >> Cape Verde travel tips

There are quite a few all-inclusive hotels in Cape Verde. Which is certainly convenient if you want to know exactly what you're getting and not have to worry about a thing. But Sal also has some really nice boutique-style hotels that I can definitely recommend and can't wait to try out for myself on my next trip.
Dunes of the Sea – design hotel within walking distance of the beach
Hotel Oasis Atlantico Belorizonte – staying directly on the beach of Santa Maria
Hotel Odjo d'Agua – at the end of the boulevard with a beautiful view
Old Port – next to the Odjo d'Agua hotel in the center of Santa Maria

4 >> Food & Drink >> SAL TRAVEL GUIDE

Staying on Sal? Then you should definitely go to Santa Maria for some delicious food. There's a surprising number of Italian restaurants, which I didn't mind at all. Menus are full of fresh fish and lobster. Yum! The local seafood specialty will surprise you. I ate barnacles for the first time in Cape Verde. Yep, apparently you can eat them. And delicious! With a flavor somewhere between crab and cockle. Try them while you're there! Great restaurants include Leonardo and Barracuda.
Tip: book in advance, as it can be quite busy.

5 >> To do >> cape verde travel tips

If you're going to Sal or another island in Cape Verde, plan on doing absolutely nothing. Digital detox, relaxing in the sun and sea, enjoying your loved one, and eating delicious food. There's not a whole lot else to do. What do we recommend? In the right season, you can see whales in Cape Verde, and the bay is teeming with lemon sharks. You understand: we'll be back. You can also go on a jeep safari in a 4x4, which is great if you want to see more than just Santa Maria ;-).

6 >> (Kite) surfing >> SAL TRAVEL GUIDE

Because Sal, and Cape Verde in general, can get quite windy, this island is perfect for anyone who loves (kite)surfing. You do need to brave the big waves, though :-). I met a Your Little Black Book follower in Cape Verde, and she told me that kitesurfing lessons in Cape Verde are much cheaper than elsewhere. A private two-hour lesson costs €95, and you'll be picked up from your hotel.
