How well prepared are you when you travel? If you travel a lot, you'll probably already know what to look out for, what to pack, and what's useful to know. But if you don't travel often, you naturally don't want any surprises! Don't tell anyone, but I once almost missed my plane because I forgot about the time difference. Oops! That's why this blog post offers handy tips to ensure your city trip to New York runs as smoothly as possible.

5 useful things to know when going to New York

time difference new york >>

It's always helpful to check: is there a time difference with the Netherlands, and how much? Does time move forward or backward? There's nothing more annoying than sitting down at your laptop to Skype with the Netherlands, only to find they're already in bed ;-) In New York, it's 6 hours earlier than in Amsterdam. So, when you arrive, your day suddenly lasts 6 hours longer! Great, because then you can still enjoy some time out.

The weather in New York >>

A few days before I travel, I always check the weather! Is the sun shining, will it stay dry, or will it be cold? Summers and autumns in New York are often pleasantly warm, and even in late October, we were still happily walking around in a T-shirt. But if the weather changes, it can be pouring with rain and quite windy. So, in addition to jeans, sturdy boots, T-shirts, cardigans, and a jacket, I always pack a small umbrella and a thick scarf in my suitcase! Better safe than sorry!

public transportation in new york >>

Traveling in New York is much easier when you take the subway! If you're staying in one neighborhood all day, I prefer to walk. But to see more in one day and travel from neighborhood to neighborhood, for example, the subway is the fastest option. A single ride costs about $2,5, but if you plan on taking the subway often, buy a subway pass! You can top it up whenever you run low. Another convenient mode of transport is, of course, the yellow cab! These cheerful yellow taxis take you from door to door. Handy if you don't feel like walking or if the weather is bad.
