TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam: authentic omakase hotspot in the Pijp

TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam is the newest omakase hotspot in the Pijp. At the beginning of summer, a Japanese couple took over 101Gowrie and renamed it TEWATASHI – a heaven on earth for sushi lovers, to say the least.

Interior and atmosphere at TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam

At TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam, Japanese hospitality, an oasis of tranquility, and the authentic flavors of the country come together. Tewatashi means "connection and communication" in Japanese, and that's precisely what the hosts strive for. To make the place truly Japanese, the couple flew in a contractor from Japan (!) to complete the authentic experience and perfect the renovation down to the smallest detail. And so they did, because you can't get more Japanese in the Netherlands than at TEWATASHI. If you want to take a little bit of Japan home with you, you can. Not in the form of a doggy bag, but in the form of Japanese ceramics they sell.

Upon entering, your gaze is immediately drawn by the chef's unique culinary skills and techniques, skillfully showcasing his talent from behind the bar. Most tables overlook the bar, making it immediately clear that the chef prepares everything—and I mean everything!—fresh.

Dishes and menu of TEWATASHI Sushi

The month of August is dedicated to a large omakase sample menu, both to prepare for what's to come and to introduce local residents to the new restaurant. Starting in September, the omakase menu will consist of 15 dishes, while the tasting menu will consist of 7. Each dish comes with a chef's explanation, so there's no need to fumble around to discover the unique flavors. Expect plenty of fish and vegetarian dishes on the menu, featuring surprising vegetables, herbs, and signature Japanese flavors.

TEWATASHI's dishes are a mix of shared dining and sushi (also a bit shared, of course). They specialize in edo-mae sushi, a traditional Tokyo style known for its simplicity and freshness. The dishes are served on unique tableware, all Japanese, handmade and hand-picked in Japan by the owners.

And if you'd like a glass of sake with it, you've come to the right place. Sommelier Carrie has created a menu that perfectly complements the dishes being served. Prefer non-alcoholic? Then tea master Agu will help you create the perfect tea pairing.

TEWATASHI Sushi is perfect for a date night

Thanks to the unique character of this restaurant and its extensive menu, TEWATASHI is perfect for a date night, but preferably with a date you've known for a while. It's a small place, and you'll quickly connect with others. So, if you prefer privacy or to focus entirely on each other, you're better off going to a more 'standard' restaurant.
