TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam: authentic omakase hotspot of the Pijp

TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam is the latest omakase hotspot in De Pijp. At the beginning of summer, a Japanese couple took over 101Gowrie and transformed it into TEWATASHI – a heaven on earth for sushi lovers.

Interior and atmosphere at TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam

At TEWATASHI Sushi Amsterdam, Japanese hospitality, an oasis of tranquillity, and the authentic flavours of the country come together. Tewatashi means ‘connection and communication’ in Japanese, which is precisely what the host and hostess strive for. To make the place truly Japanese, the couple flew in a contractor from Japan (!) to complete the authentic experience and perfect the refurbishment down to minor details. And so it happened because you won’t find anything more Japanese in the Netherlands than at TEWATASHI. Want to take a little bit of Japan home with you? You can, not in the form of a doggy bag but in the form of Japanese ceramics that they sell.

Upon entering, you are immediately drawn to the chef’s remarkable cooking skills and techniques, which he expertly demonstrates from behind the bar. Most of the tables overlook the bar, making it immediately clear that the chef prepares everything – absolutely everything! – fresh.

Dishes and menu at TEWATASHI Sushi

The month of August focuses on a sizeable omakase sample menu in preparation for what is to come and to introduce residents to the new establishment. From September, the omakase menu will consist of 15 bites, and the test menu will include 7. The chef provides explanations with each dish, so there’s no guessing about the unique flavours. Expect many fish and vegetarian dishes with surprising vegetables, herbs, and typically Japanese flavours.

The dishes at TEWATASHI are a mix of shared dining and sushi (also a bit shared, of course). They specialise in edo-mae sushi, a traditional style from Tokyo known for being straightforward and fresh. You’ll also be eating from unique tableware, all Japanese, handmade, and selected by the owners in Japan.

And if you fancy a glass of sake, you’re in the right place. Sommelier Carrie has assembled a menu that pairs perfectly with the dishes served at the time. Prefer alcohol-free? Then, tea master Agu will help you choose the perfect tea pairing.

TEWATASHI Sushi is perfect for date night

Thanks to the unique character of this place and the extensive menu, TEWATASHI is ideal for a date night, but only with a date you’ve known for a while. It’s a small place, and you’ll quickly find yourself in contact with others. So, if you prefer to sit anonymously or focus entirely on each other, you might want to opt for a more ‘standard’ restaurant.
