6 x restaurants with terraces in Amsterdam city center

Café Twee Prinsen

After Café Binnenvisser in Amsterdam-West and Restaurant Cornerstore in Amsterdam-Noord, the same team opened Café Twee Prinsen in the city center. Open seven days a week, from happy hour until midnight, and on weekends also for lunch or brunch. From the large windows, you can already sense the cozy vibe of a modern Amsterdam brown café. This is the place to be for good food and drinks, and on sunny days, you can enjoy the terrace along the canal. Don’t expect formal table settings on the terrace, but more of a wine bar vibe where you can order small sharing plates.
Prinsenstraat 27, Amsterdam – tweeprinsen.nl

Restaurant de Luwte

As the name might suggest, this spot is really tucked away from the hustle and bustle. Right in the heart of the city, yet calm. The food here is excellent, but the terrace is small: make sure to arrive early! If you manage to snag a spot, you’ll have a view over the Leliegracht.
Leliegracht 26, Amsterdam – restaurantdeluwte.nl

Lion Noir

You definitely want to know about this hidden terrace. We’d rather keep this courtyard to ourselves, but that wouldn’t be fair ;-). It’s a true gem for a bite to eat.
Reguliersdwarsstraat 28, Amsterdam – lionnoir.nl

Restaurant Breda

Fine dining with a lovely terrace. Besides dinner, the lunch menu here is highly recommended. You’ll be thoroughly pampered, making it a real evening (or afternoon) out. The terrace overlooks the Singel.
Singel 210, Amsterdam – breda-amsterdam.nl

Brasserie Marie

Here, you’re sitting right on the water, fully in the sun. The terrace is not part of the Michelin-starred restaurant but belongs to Brasserie Marie. The food is still delicious but more affordable. You can also just stop by for drinks and enjoy the view.
Nieuwe Doelenstraat 2 , Amsterdam – leurope.nl

Parlotte

For a moment, you’ll feel like you’re in Paris, right on the Westerstraat. Parlotte brings everything the French cuisine has to offer straight to Amsterdam. The terrace tables are charmingly dressed with red-and-white checkered cloths, and the service is always impeccable. Highly recommended!

Wils Bakery Café

Joris Bijdendijk (known from RIJKS* and Wils*) has opened a new spot at Amsterdam’s Stadionplein. Wils Bakery Café is a combination of a bakery and a bistro, making it the more casual sister to the Michelin-starred Wils restaurant located on the third floor of the building. Wils Bakery Café offers the best of both worlds: a place where the craftsmanship of a bakery meets the coziness of a French bistro. While Wils* provides an exclusive dining or lunch experience, at Wils Bakery Café you can walk in without a reservation for classic lunch and bread dishes. Think: the Reuben sandwich, an asparagus quiche, and pâté en croûte. Additionally, Bijdendijk and his team serve their best versions of schnitzel, slavink, and soft serve ice cream. You can also buy bread, pastries, and lunch to-go from the bakery itself. In summer, Wils Bakery Café offers a lovely terrace at Stadionplein. Sounds good, doesn’t it?
Stadionplein 24, Amsterdam – wilsbakerycafe.nl

Restaurant Klein Kalfje

For a moment, it seemed like this restaurant was going to close its doors for good, but luckily they’re open again! The terrace is across the street, so you’re sitting right on the water. The menu offers classic Grand Café dishes. A bonus: you’re really away from the busy city here, and the trip to get there is enjoyable too.
Amsteldijk Noord 355, Amsterdam – kleinkalfje.nl

Café Caron

Just outside the busy part of De Pijp, you’ll find Café Caron. The menu features high-quality French dishes. Want to have a drink somewhere beforehand? Head to its little sibling, Petit Caron, on Gerard Douplein!
Frans Halsstraat 28, Amsterdam – cafecaron.nl

Volt

Good, affordable dishes and a lovely terrace—sounds like a perfect combination, doesn’t it? Even better: they have terrace heaters, so you won’t be getting cold here anytime soon!
Ferdinand Bolstraat 178, Amsterdam – restaurantvolt.nl

Caffè Pico

For a moment, you’ll feel like you’re in Rome, but really, you’re in Amsterdam’s De Pijp. At Caffè Pico, you’ll enjoy the finest Italian ingredients on one of the coziest terraces in Amsterdam. From paper-thin pizza to pasta vongole, everything tastes just a little better in the open air.

Schotsheuvel

Right in the heart of Oud-Zuid and oh-so-cozy. Schotsheuvel (or just “Schots” for the regulars) is a laid-back eatery with a terrace. Follow the sun from aperitif time to snack time with drinks.

Marathonweg

They have a great terrace here, but also a great menu. It’s ideal to start with a drink in the late afternoon and then stay on for dinner.

Sjefietshe

A terrace to fall in love with. Just outside the busy part of De Pijp, almost on the water. Along the facade, you can sit nicely sheltered, while other spots offer plenty of sunshine. The menu features refreshing fish dishes to complete the experience.

De Zingende Zwaan

From the creators of Wijmpje Beukers and Schotsheuvel comes De Zingende Zwaan. You’ll find it just behind the Overtoom, and what a peaceful oasis it is with its large terrace. The kitchen serves “pub food” with French and English twists.
Eerste Helmerstraat 250, Amsterdam – dezingendezwaan.nl

Renato’s Pizzeria

On a cute little square in De Pijp, you’ll find this pizzeria. The pizzas are really delicious, and the terrace is small but cozy. Come early if you want a spot—it’s always busy inside too!

Le French Café

In the always lively and bustling Javastraat, you can visit Le French Café all day long. It’s a modern French bistro with a menu full of the best that France has to offer, making you feel like you’re in Paris for a moment. The interior is fantastic! One thing I really like about this new restaurant in Amsterdam is that there are various cozy corners throughout the place. There’s a communal table to join, small bistro tables where you can quietly read a newspaper, a cozy bar for endless drinks later in the day, and, of course, a lovely terrace. The menu features delicious brunch dishes like Eggs Benedict, steak tartare, and more. Want to stay for drinks after brunch? Then Le French Café is definitely the right place to be.
Javastraat 42, Amsterdam, Oost – lefrenchcafe.nl

De Ysbreeker

For many years, you’ve been able to find De Ysbreeker in Amsterdam Oost. It’s a true all-day spot, perfect for lunch or coffee in the sunshine during the day.
Weesperzijde 23, Amsterdam – deysbreeker.nl

Foer

Foer is named after “foraging,” or wild picking. Being outdoors is very important to the people of Foer, and their terrace reflects that uniqueness. Located in an old coffee house, everything here has charm and character, making it a fun experience with amazing food.
Cruquiusweg 9, Amsterdam – foeramsterdam.nl

Breman Brasserie

Expect a massive terrace here! We’ve been told it can accommodate more than 200 guests, yet it doesn’t feel too overwhelming. Instead, it’s cozy, with charming corners and benches. There’s also a fantastic play area for kids, so feel free to bring them along.
Oostelijke Handelskade 34, Amsterdam – thehoxton.com/amsterdam/lloyd

De Kas

Harvested in the morning, on your plate in the afternoon—that’s the promise of restaurant De Kas, which has a wonderful terrace in the middle of Frankendael Park. From the terrace, you can look out over the garden filled with herbs and edible flowers. Bet you’ll see them on your plate later!

ALBA

A true neighborhood favourite. Why? High-quality food, laid-back vibe. We always feel welcome here, but especially on the large terrace along Wibautstraat. Enjoy a chef’s menu or create your own with snacks and bites, all paired with a nice glass of (natural) wine, of course.
Wibautstraat 105HS, Amsterdam – alba-amsterdam.nl

BAUT oost

Another favorite on Wibautstraat is BAUT. From lunch to dinner and from coffee to cocktails, we can always find a spot on the terrace at BAUT Oost. The lunch and dinner menus are top-notch, but definitely take a good look at the snack (and cocktail) menu as well.
Wibautstraat 125, Amsterdam – bautoost.nl

Wilde Zwijnen

You can enjoy great food right in the middle of Javaplein. They don’t have a large terrace, so come early if you want to grab a spot!

Looking to dine by the water in Oost? Then head to Ode aan de Amstel. In the spot where Riva used to be, you can now enjoy an accessible all-day menu. Want to go all out with multiple courses? Opt for the chef’s menu!

De Vergulden Eenhoorn

A hidden gem in Oost. The food is simple but very tasty (definitely try the cheesecake!). Even a little bit of sunshine here feels like the height of summer. Like!
Ringdijk 58, Amsterdam – verguldeneenhoorn.nl

De Plantage

This terrace borders Artis—so the view is already great. Now you can also enjoy good food here, making it a complete win-win!

Karavaan

Around the corner from Kwakersplein, you’ll find the cozy Karavaan. An all-day hotspot where you can not only come for your first cup of coffee, brunch, lunch, or drinks with friends, but also a great place to open your laptop and get some work done. They open every day at 9:00 AM, so it’s perfect for an early meet-up with friends! And did I mention they have a really nice terrace?
Kwakersplein 2, Amsterdam – karavaanamsterdam.nl

Café Cook

A hidden gem in De Baarsjes. The food here is simple but of good quality, and that terrace… I love it! You get sunlight here for a long time, so you’re set until late in the evening.
James Cookstraat 2, Amsterdam – cafecook.nl

Cantine de Caron

A bold venue at Westergas, but with a charming terrace. White linens and French vibes. Add to that the excellent quality dishes from the Caron family, and you know you’re in for a lovely time on the terrace.
Pazzanistraat 8, Amsterdam – restaurantscaron.nl

Cafe Beurre

Is this the best vegetarian restaurant in the city? Maybe! It’s always packed inside, and the terrace is no exception. They don’t take reservations here, so when you manage to grab a spot on the terrace, you’ll feel pretty special.

Felperlaan

A true neighborhood spot, and maybe this part of West needed that. At Felperlaan, you could easily come multiple times a week. One time for the fish of the day, another just for a glass of wine and a snack. Make sure at least one of those times is on the terrace, because it’s so nice.
Hoofdweg 141, Amsterdam – cafefelperlaan.nl

La Parole

You can’t make reservations here, but you can cozy up on the terrace just behind the Foodhallen. We always get strong Parisian vibes here, and the menu certainly helps with that. At Parole, you’re in good hands for lunch, dinner, and drinks.
Kwakerstraat 24, Amsterdam – laparole.nl

Bar Kantoor

The newest addition to Westerpark. It’s part of the Conscious Hotel and has a large terrace overlooking Westerpark. How fun! Seafood lovers will definitely want to know about this spot.
Haarlemmerweg 8, Amsterdam – barkantoor.nl

Café Amsterdam

This place is huge inside and has narrow tables outside by the water. The menu is as extensive as the interior—huge! Plenty of options for everyone, so make sure you secure a spot on the terrace first ;-)
Watertorenplein 6, Amsterdam – caferestaurantamsterdam.nl

Morgan & Mees

They have such a lovely summer terrace here! And I keep coming back for the food. It’s highly recommended for a long evening dinner.

Cafe Restaurant Metro

Metro in Amsterdam Noord is one of the nicest new restaurants, with a lovely terrace for summer days. They have their own bakery and serve fantastic dishes from their rotating menu starting at 12:00 PM. Perfect for lunch or dinner with friends, with affordable wines and a great atmosphere! TIP: It’s also fun to combine a daytime visit with the NXT Museum, which is right next to Café Restaurant Metro.
Asterweg 22, Amsterdam, Noord – caferestaurantmetro.nl

Pllek

One of the best spots in Amsterdam Noord is still Pllek, especially because they open early every day. Great for parents, as the spacious setup makes it a kid-friendly place to go. Open from breakfast until late, the restaurant never fails to surprise. They are leaders in sustainability, so it’s no surprise that vegans and vegetarians are well taken care of here! In summer, you can enjoy the terrace or relax with your feet in the sand at the city beach.
T.T. Neveritaweg 59, Amsterdam, Noord – pllek.nl

De Goudfazant

This spot is perfect if you’ve spent the day boating. The terraces in Noord have a different vibe compared to those on the “mainland” ;-), making you feel like you’ve really escaped the hustle and bustle. A long dinner here—preferably on the terrace—is a great way to end a day out.
Aambeeldstraat 10H, Amsterdam – hoteldegoudfazant.nl

Barracuda

A true hit, that’s what we can call Barracuda. Now expanded with Barracuda Bar, it’s hard to choose which has the better terrace. For food, head to Barracuda, and for drinks (and beach loungers!) go to Barracuda Bar. Luckily, they’re just a few steps apart.
Aambeeldstraat 10, Amsterdam – barracuda.amsterdam

Pelusa

Pelusa means fluff, which is a tribute to Maradona, the Argentine footballer. The connection to Argentina lies in the grill, where the most delicious dishes are prepared. On this terrace in Noord, you’ll feel like you’re in South America, not because of the surroundings (yet), but definitely because of the food. Pelusa is worth it in every way.
Leen Jongewaardkade 11, Amsterdam – pelusa.amsterdam

Helling7

Special because of its location, the building, the food, and the terrace. Helling7 has it all. Located in the middle of the shipbuilding area of NDSM, this restaurant cooks over an open fire. The terrace stretches out toward the water and is surrounded by gigantic ships. It’s a place we always want to return to.
