10 Takeaway hotspots where you can secretly linger to people watch

Emma

29 February 2024

Meet up with friends at a place that's actually meant for takeout. Then, sit on a small bench outside or simply hang out by the window until you're practically ready to order a second round. At these takeaway spots, it's all about seeing and being seen in Amsterdam. Don't be surprised if you have to wait in line.

Looking for a new (or golden oldie) takeaway hangout in Amsterdam? A place where you always end up lingering longer than intended? We completely understand, and we're all too familiar with those Saturdays that start with a stroll through Noordermarkt and end with a crazy, standing-up drink in the Jordaan. So, here's a roundup of the best takeaway hangouts and hotspots throughout Amsterdam where you'll go for takeout and secretly end up lingering far too long.

take-away Hotspots Amsterdam where you secretly linger

Toki

Does Amsterdam have better coffee than that at TokiWe doubt it. The staff is friendly and doesn't get carried away even when extremely busy, creating a relaxed atmosphere. The pastries—banana bread, chocolate cake, and homemade chocolate and miso cookies—are legendary, and reason enough to visit this coffee shop. A relaxed crowd always hangs around Toki, where everyone seems to know each other.

Saint Jean

Since Saint Jean After going viral on TikTok, it's become one of Amsterdam's most popular hotspots. Located on Lindengracht in the heart of the Jordaan district, it's a cozy spot where you can easily spend a few hours. All the snacks are vegan, the coffee is strong, and the interior is lovely. Dumplings

Located on the edge of the Westerpark Dumplings, a tiny kiosk with acclaimed dumplings and Asian crêpes. Owners Chao Fang and Xiao Yu created several dishes together, drawing inspiration from Cantonese cuisine for the rest. And it's popular, as evidenced by the long lines that usually form. Once you've finished your meal at Dumplings, you can take a pleasant stroll through Westerpark, and who knows where you might end up...

Ikaria Food

Ikaria Food The restaurant on Kwakerplein is of Greek origin and now boasts a modest terrace where you can catch plenty of sun during the day. The staff is friendly and helpful, and they know how to whip up the most delicious Greek classics. Their banana bread (according to them, "the best in Amsterdam") is also a treat.

zero-zero

zero-zero (with two locations recently opened!) is a household name for the average Amsterdammer. Day in, day out, a long line forms, eager to enjoy a schiacciata. And rightly so, because the sandwiches Zero Zero serves are unparalleled. Besides sandwiches, Zero Zero offers (natural) wine and excellent coffee, the kind only Italians know. Without a doubt, one of Amsterdam's hotspots where you can spend the entire afternoon.
Zero Zero, Gerard Doustraat 56, Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 3a, Amsterdam

Troppo Giovane Wines

Troppo Giovane isn't actually a restaurant, but a natural wine shop. Nevertheless, the loyal clientele always sticks around and spends an entire afternoon tasting wine. So if you're looking for a good natural wine, or want to learn more about it, you've come to the right place. Don't be surprised if you make new friends.
Troppo, Binnen Dommersstraat 22-24, Amsterdam

Bakery Loof

Foliage is a relatively new addition from the guys behind Café Binnenvisser, and a bakery where the aroma alone will get you excited. The croissants are crispy, the sourdough bread is divine, the drinks menu is extensive, and the folding chairs outside the door invite you to an afternoon of delicious treats.

Venu, Haarlemmerdijk 138, Amsterdam
