Every time I'm in Nijmegen, the city continues to amaze me! Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, has a beautiful historic city center. But it's the industrial character of the old factory sites, which have been transformed into creative incubators, that truly gives the city its character. Just like its location on the Waal River, which I had a fantastic view of from our hotel during my last visit. I was there in December, almost a year ago now, to create a fantastic guide for you. However, the lockdowns threw a wrench in the works, but now it's time to share all these winter tips with you! You can read all about how cozy Nijmegen is for a winter city break in this new hotspot guide. We went on a day trip with our son Manuel, and the next day he was picked up by Grandma so we could also add a spa night. That's why in this Nijmegen update, you'll find both kid-friendly tips and tips that are perfect for a weekend getaway for two. Enjoy!

Come with me to get breakfast in Taipei 🥢
Straight from the airport to this little place to taste soup dumplings and so much more! That's what I call a soft landing 😉 <3
In Taipei, you go to a Soy Milk Shop for breakfast. Warm soy milk to eat in a bowl, and steam baskets with the tastiest dumplings and baozi. You can really wake me up for this kind of breakfast. These local breakfast spots come in all shapes and sizes, from Michelin-recommended spots to hole-in-the-wall stalls.
Most soy milk shops open early (and sometimes even 24 hours a day), and these are the dishes you want to try:
🥄 Warm soy milk
🥢 Soup dumplings (you can often choose between pork and veggies)
🥢 Pork baozi
🥢 Youtiao (油條 - a kind of fried donut stick)
🥢 Youtiao (油條) w/ pork floss & rice
🥢 Turnip cake
🥢 Chives pancake
🥢 Scallion pancake
TIP: Sharing is a good idea to taste as much as possible, because the portions are (often) large.
You'll want to remember these soy milk shops for your future trip to Taipei:
📍Fuhang Soy Milk
📍Soy Milk Shop
📍Yong He Soya Milk King (Da'an)
📍Sihai Soy Milk
I am currently touring Taiwan, and you can also find all the tips in my Stories Highlight.
Have you ever been to Taiwan? I'm curious if you thought it was *that* amazing!

Just back from Catalonia and I thought: I'll share some tips right away.
During our road trip, we stayed two nights in the Ebro Delta. An incredibly fun stop for families and foodies, where there is plenty to do.
• A boat trip to the Musclarium is a must! Here you eat oysters and mussels straight from the farm, in the middle of the sea.
· Admire the flamingos and black ibises that can be found here all year round.
· Rice is grown in the Ebro Delta all year round. For paella, but Kensho also makes sake and miso from it! You can visit them during a tasting.
Cycling along the rice fields, canoeing on the Ebro River, and visiting various beaches. It was still a bit too cold right now, but there is plenty to do.
• The towns are very low-key and not that exciting, but you can find fantastic local food there. From the Michelin-awarded Les Moles* to local eateries like Vermuteria Bonmarisc and Lo Tinglado. We ate a lot of fish, but also anemone fritters (a first!).
Now back to work, and I’m going to create an extensive travel guide of this road trip through Catalonia, but you’ll want to save these tips for a future adventure.

If you're looking for a kid-friendly hotel in Nijmegen, look no further. Officially, this hotel is located just outside the city in Lent. Be sure to book a room on the higher floors, as they offer fantastic views of the city! Manuel loved discovering new sights in the skyline together. This Van der Valk Hotel offers comfortable family rooms as well as modern suites. It's definitely child-friendly, so the kids will certainly want for nothing while dining in the restaurant in the evening. From the hotel, you can take lovely walks in the immediate vicinity. Or rent a bike from the hotel and enjoy a scenic bike ride along the Waal River. Prefer an e-chopper? Fully electric, completely silent, super comfortable, and of course, much faster than cycling. After a day exploring the city or nature, you can relax in the evening in the wellness area. Complete with a sauna, a Turkish steam bath, and foot baths, all free for hotel guests. During our stay in December, the entire hotel was festively decorated with Christmas trees and lights. A great base with the kids if you want to get away for a night during the festive season!

During our second night in Nijmegen, Manuel stayed with grandma and we were able to fully recharge at Sanadome Hotel & SpaAfter a delicious dinner in the restaurant and a day at the spa, you can roll straight into your box spring bed, covered in crisp white sheets. The next day, you can stroll downstairs from your hotel room in your slippers. The spa features an indoor thermal pool, an outdoor thermal pool (my favorite, especially in winter!), a warm water pool, a saltwater pool, herbal whirlpools, a mint room, a steam room, foot baths, a thermal garden, and aqua gym. What makes Sanadome special is that the water in the spa comes from its own spring. The temperature is at least 33°C, so you'll immediately feel your body relax as soon as you enter the water. Want to go the extra mile and enjoy some me-time? You can also book a variety of additional treatments, such as massages, hammams, and facials.

Have you heard of the Honig Complex in Nijmegen? It's one of my favorite spots in the city. And it has a very special story. For years, this former factory complex was rented out to start-ups. This was intended as a temporary solution for these vacant buildings, but the creative hub Honig quickly became a household name in Nijmegen and the surrounding area. That's why, thankfully, the decision was made not to demolish the oldest part of the complex! Here you'll now find numerous great restaurants and cultural hotspots. For example: coffee bar First Things First, restaurant De Meesterproef, the tasting room of the Oersoep brewery, and Nevel, where they sell sustainably brewed beer with unique flavors. You'll also find various artisans in the Honig Complex, regular exhibitions, and other art projects. And "In de Pijplijn" (In the Pipeline) houses a theater and a music venue. In short: don't miss the Honig Complex when you're in Nijmegen! – honigcomplex.nl

Honey complex
De Bastei is a must-visit with kids, if you ask me. Nijmegen is perhaps the best place to discover the flora and fauna of the Gelderland river area. It's located right on the Waal River and is also the oldest city in the Netherlands. In this museum, you delve into the past to discover how the river connects city and nature and what we can learn from it for the future. Manuel loved discovering Nijmegen's exciting history. The exhibitions in this family museum change regularly, so there's always something new to see. Want to really get out into nature after your visit? From De Bastei, you can walk or cycle straight into the Gelderse Poort nature reserve.
Lange Baan 4, 6511 XJ Nijmegen

The Basteis
Another place not to miss if you're taking the kids on a city trip to Nijmegen is Kronenburgpark. Located in the city center, it's a lovely green haven where they can burn off some energy. Around the park, you'll find remnants of the medieval city walls, including the famous Kruittoren (powder tower), which gives you a sense of the city's history as you walk. The pond with its bridge creates a picturesque scene and reminded me briefly of Central Park. But the park's best feature is the small playground and a petting zoo home to deer, goats, peacocks, and chickens. TIP: You can download a walking route from the Kronenburgerpark website, which includes a brief explanation and history of everything you'll encounter along the way.
Kronenburgerplaats 6511, 6511 AW Nijmegen

Kronenburg Park
For me, the Stevenskerk (Steven's Church) symbolizes eight centuries of Nijmegen's history. Did you know you can climb the tower from March to November? I definitely will next time, because the view of the city from the Stevenstoren is breathtaking. But you don't necessarily have to climb to the top to be amazed. Wander through the narrow, historic streets surrounding the Stevenskerk. So beautiful! A great place for a bite to eat and a drink is Philipse, a vintage shop and lunch spot combined where time seems to have stood still. – stevenskerk.nl

Walking around the Stevenskerk
This small park is situated on a hill, making the view alone worthwhile. We were there in winter, so there was a mysterious mist, but normally you can see for miles. The park also features the Barbarossa Ruins, a remnant of Valkhof Palace, rebuilt in 1155 by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Good to know: the chapel is run by volunteers and therefore has limited opening hours. Check the website in advance for the chapel's opening hours.
Kelfkensbos 59, 6511 TB Nijmegen

The Valkhof Park
In summer, the various beaches along the Waal River are perfect for swimming, picnicking, drinks, and barbecues. But when it's cold, this area is perfect for a winter stroll. In the city center, you'll find several charming restaurants with water views, but you can also stroll a bit further out of town and be right in the heart of nature. Stroll along the river and spot the wild horses, or in spring, watch for storks among the old farmhouses in the Ooijpolder. – De Waalkade

The Waalkade
The Honig Complex is better known, but locals already know their way to this cultural hub, located on a former industrial estate in the Hazenkamp neighborhood. It's a great place to discover and, more importantly, see something new during a city break. Hubert's goal? To make art and culture accessible to everyone. In this cultural hub, you can meet artists, designers, and scientists in the café, film club, game nights, or during one of the other cultural activities. Be sure to check out the website to see what's on the agenda. I'll definitely be going there on my next visit! – hubertnijmegen.nl
Fancy a walk in the Ooijpolder? Nestled between the ridge and the Waal River, you'll find the Oortjeshekken hotel and restaurant. It's a convenient place to park, as you can easily cross the dike and find yourself surrounded by nature. The walks take you through a vast landscape of small villages, farms, and, above all, lush greenery. It's also fun with kids, as you'll find cows roaming freely. And why is parking at Oortjeshekken such a good tip? You can get delicious takeaway coffee for your walk and warm up afterward with something to eat and drink.

The beautiful Ooijpolder
In the Honig Complex, precisely where processed food used to be made, you can now visit restaurant De Meesterproef for a meal prepared using traditional artisanal techniques. Pickling, canning, smoking, and preserving: you'll see it all in the dishes! And the ingredients, whenever possible, are sourced from local suppliers. I've been here several times now, and it's a wonderful place in a cool, industrial setting that I keep returning to.
Waalbandijk 14, 6541 AJ Nijmegen, demeesterproefnijmegen.nl
Do you feel completely at home in Berlin? Then you'll definitely love this restaurant. Just like the city that's arguably the hottest spot for startups, artists, and creatives in Europe right now, Bistrobar Berlin stands for an open mind, graffiti, cult culture, and connecting beautiful people. Here, they do everything with a little more daring and sometimes a bit of bravado. The result? An evening of pure dining that's anything but boring!
Daalseweg 15-17, 6521 GE Nijmegen, bistrobarberlin.nl
Fika is Swedish for "coffee break," but you're also welcome here for breakfast, lunch, drinks, and an evening snack on weekends. Because a real fika is really more about clearing your head. A great hotspot in Nijmegen to stop by while shopping. TIP: Next to the café is Fika Kiøsk. For coffee, soft drinks, cake, and smørrebrød to go. They also sell fika bags and products from local creatives. It's fun to browse!
Van Broeckhuysenstraat 5, 6511 PE Nijmegen, fika-nijmegen.nl
An evening meal at De Nieuwe Winkel is high on my food bucket list. This restaurant, which primarily focuses on plant-based cuisine, is one to keep an eye on. At De Nieuwe Winkel, they even have a word for it: botanical gastronomy. The team believes that you can offer your guests excellent, high-quality food while choosing ingredients that don't deplete the planet. Chef Emile van der Staak prefers to conceive his new dishes on a log in the food forest, where the ingredients for your dinner grow. I've been following De Nieuwe Winkel on Instagram for a while now, and the dishes look so fantastic. I'll be back soon to try them!

Bistro Flore has become a household name in Nijmegen. In the summer, the patio is a delightful spot, but did you know it's also open in the winter? It's completely covered! Or would you prefer to sit in the dining room or with the chef at the kitchen bar? When Flore had to close in 2020 due to the pandemic, they converted the garage into a wine room. Here, the wine bottles are now stored in climate-controlled rooms at just the right temperature. From the patio, you can look straight into the interior through a large window! And what's on the menu? Pure dishes, each a work of art on your plate.
Kelfkensbos 43, 6511 TB Nijmegen, bistroflores.nl
If you follow the aroma of freshly baked cakes and coffee from the Grote Markt, you'll arrive at this delightful coffee bar. A place where you can escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy artisan bread topped with the most delicious homemade products. Prefer a salad? That's also possible! The only thing you'll find impossible to resist is the homemade sweets. Just a warning!
Kannenmarkt 6, 6511 KC Nijmegen, bairroalto.nl
Holt hasn't been open in Nijmegen for very long and, as they describe it, is a bit of everything. It's a coffee shop, a lunchroom, an ice cream parlor, and a traditional Dutch pub. But it's not all of those things. Typical of Holt? The pursuit of the perfect balance between craft and comfort. Perhaps that's what you get when you put two brothers with Portuguese blood, a chef with a soft spot for France, and a charismatic Achterhoek native together to run a café: a little bit of everything, for the best results!
Houtstraat 75, 6511 JM Nijmegen, holt-nijmegen.nl

Enjoy breakfast, brunch, or lunch here in peace and quiet. It's a hotspot you should know about, tucked away in a side street. It's the perfect spot to start a day in Nijmegen with a croissant or a delicious cake and coffee. The dishes change with the seasons, they always play great music, and the service is pleasantly fast.

This department store is one of a kind. You can shop guilt-free here, which is exactly what I did during my last visit to Nijmegen. I bought almost everything I needed for my Christmas tree. They have a great selection of slow and fair fashion and lifestyle items for women, men, and children. Also fun: the department store organizes workshops and other activities around the theme of "sustainable living." Think oyster mushroom cultivation, a clothing repair café, cutting swaps, natural maternity care, and clothing and color advice, so every item of clothing will be your favorite from now on.
Burchtstraat 126, 6511 RK Nijmegen, duurzamewarenhuis.nl
Spread across three locations, you'll almost always find something fun at Make My Day. I've certainly never left empty-handed. And I'm always extra proud when I see my own books in the store! You'll also find cute and affordable clothing, fantastic homewares, and just about everything you never knew you wanted. It's truly a store where you're constantly surprised by new items!
