Sri Lanka Travel Guide: 9 travel tips for this dream island

One of the destinations that really gave me that 'wow' feeling in recent years is Sri Lanka , where I toured the southern province. Many (Asian) tourists visit, but to me, it felt less touristy during the low season than the other well-known islands in Asia. The palm trees right down to the beach, the delicious food, and the fact that you can combine a safari with a beach holiday make it a destination high on my list to return to. You can find the best tips in this Sri Lanka Travel Guide.

You'll want to know these tips for Sri Lanka:

Plan ahead: Although Sri Lanka is not a large island, when planning your trip I would advise making choices and not trying to cram too much into a short time. Traveling itself actually takes quite a lot of time because the roads are poor or the trains run slowly. Also, keep in mind that the climate in the north and south of the island is completely different due to the mountains lying in between. So, do your research!

Go for seafood: I mentioned it before, but I found the delicious food in Sri Lanka to be a major advantage of this destination. You eat an incredible amount of incredibly fresh seafood there! We found one of the nicest restaurants right by the railway tracks, where we ordered huge platters of fish and lobster, and every now and then a steam train would pass right by our table with a lot of noise. Furthermore, you see many Indian influences in the local cuisine, which is of course not surprising when you consider that Sri Lanka lies off the coast of India. Tip: vegetarians will be in their element in Sri Lanka!

Go on safari: It's probably clear by now that I'm a safari enthusiast. Few people know that you can also go on safari in Sri Lanka. And a good thing too! It boasts the highest number of leopards per square kilometer in the world. We spent my birthday in Yala National Park, where you have the best chance of spotting leopards in Sri Lanka. We even saw one! And although quite a distance away, it was an unforgettable birthday. Another special experience in Sri Lanka (although it does depend on the season) is releasing baby turtles into the sea. There are several turtle conservation projects where you can do this, such as in Indurawa, where I was lucky enough to experience it. So special!

Go to an Ayurveda retreat: If you are interested in Ayurveda, you can indulge yourself in Sri Lanka. After an afternoon at a specialized spa, I knew for sure: the next time I go to Sri Lanka, I am booking a week-long Ayurvedic retreat to completely reconnect with myself. You can read more about these kinds of fix-trips in this blog.

Discover Galle: If, like me, you are touring the south of Sri Lanka, a visit to the town of Galle is highly recommended. You will find Dutch remnants there that still remind us of the colonial era, and this is reflected in the street names, among other things. If you want to enjoy a delicious lunch in Galle, head to the hidden courtyard of Poonie's Kitchen for a dose of healthy food.
