Smith & Mills, cool but warm, fancy but accessible drink and dine spot

I spotted this little spot in Tribeca last summer when we were eating across the street at Locanda Verde. When it's warm outside, Smith & Mills throws open the heavy, thick metal doors, but even then, it still has an intimate feel. I didn't even notice them at first, because it's quite hidden. You could easily walk right past it. The industrial interior and the old elevator, which now serves as a restroom, are beautiful. The soft camel-colored sofas simultaneously give it a modern-chic feel. Cool yet warm, fancy yet accessible. A truly quintessential New York setting.

It's also a great spot for pre- or post-dinner cocktails. Be aware that it's a local favorite, so it fills up quickly. So it's always wise to have a plan B (I suggest Brandy Library or Weather Up).
Or try lunch or brunch. Opening hours are generous: every day from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and from Thursday to Saturday until 3 a.m. On weekends, I recommend arriving around 2 p.m.; we practically had the place to ourselves.
