Rolling Sushi Amsterdam: the story behind the hugely popular sushi sandwich
You can't have missed the fact that Rolling Sushi Amsterdam is the latest sensation in the hospitality world. Not because of its fine dining credentials, but because of the TikTok queues where people sometimes wait for an hour. All to get that coveted sushi sandwich. But is it worth it? We investigated: everything you need to know about Rolling Sushi.

Ambience and interior at Rolling Sushi Amsterdam
From young to old and from all corners of the globe, the line at Rolling Sushi is long. After asking around, it turns out everyone is eager for the sushi sandwich that has quickly become so popular. Monica Geuze—now a famous snack tester on TikTok—is a fan, and so is the rest of the country.
About three years ago, at the age of nineteen, Lode van Hattum opened his first sushi restaurant on Beethovenstraat. He knew even then: I want to start a sushi empire. Recently, he came up with the idea for the sandwich, which was an instant success. Then came Monica Geuze's post, with the famous words: "Stop messing with me. It's not normal. Just like the line out the door now." Instead of selling fifty sandwiches a day, the restaurant now sells around a thousand. And the lines just keep growing – proof that it's worth it.
The interior is just as Instagrammable as the sandwiches, as the entire place is painted light pink, with playful wall drawings.

You're probably wondering: what exactly is a sushi sandwich? The ingredients are as follows: at Rolling Sushi, the sandwich "bread" consists of fried rice in a crispy batter. These slices are topped with spicy sauce, avocado, and fresh fish, usually tuna or salmon, cut like sashimi. Then it's topped with avocado and more sauce, and of course, the second slice of sushi bread on top. Et voilà: you have the ingredients for the viral sushi sandwich.
For the "regular" sushi lover, there's also classic sushi available. But whether you want to queue for that is another matter.
