A new name has emerged in the Vondelpark neighbourhood on the edge of Amsterdam West and Old South: Meet Riot Restobar Amsterdam. In their concept – entirely focused on potatoes – they capture the rebellious spirit of Amsterdam. And it’s just as fun as it sounds.

Why you want to visit Riot Restobar
Riot Restobar Amsterdam is the rebellious successor to Moer – hence, its name. As part of Conscious Hotels, Riot introduces Amsterdam’s inhabitants and tourists to the endless possibilities of… the potato! Because you can do anything with it, as evidenced by their menu. Moreover, the name Riot holds a small history class within it. The name of the restaurant and the interior are both inspired by the Potato Rebellion, a week of protests and looting during World War I, during times of food shortages. At that time, a group of women was trying to confiscate ships carrying potatoes, which were actually intended as rations for the military.
Riot is also a nod to a joke gone too far. The former chef of Moer, now at the helm of Riot, once made a potato dish that was so well-received that a colleague joked that it deserved its own restaurant. And so it came to be.

A menu full of potatoes, indeed. But that’s not what you’d expect. Because, as it turns out, the potato is versatile. From sweet potato pancakes to potato toast with avocado in the morning (they’re open from 7:30 am) to sea bass ceviche with sweet potato chips and candied fennel in the evening – all featuring or made with potatoes. The menu is primarily vegetarian, but the meat and fish are local and organic.
And there’s more: even for lunch, you’re in for a treat here: their potato bread (for instance, topped with pico de gallo and burrata) is unlike anything else. Worth a try.
