Café Wu

On the corner of the Dapperstraat in Amsterdam East, you’ll now find Café Wu Amsterdam, a modern bistro with Chinese and French influences. Timo de Beurs might ring a bell from Slagerij de Beurs, where he was known for his incredible pâté en croûte. He now applies his classical French culinary skills to Chinese cuisine, resulting in exciting and delicious dishes. Wu is described as the ‘House of Five Flavours‘, here you dine either with a pre-set five-course menu or by choosing dishes from a compact à la carte menu. Expect everything from traditional Chinese flavours to European-influenced creations. Though they only opened in 2024, the bone marrow dish and the wonton soup are already considered modern classics! Troef

Troef in Amsterdam East is hands down one of the best new restaurants in the city. The menu is packed with flavourful dishes that make you want to order them twice, yes, that’s happened to me more than once! The welcoming team makes you feel at home right away. They’ve created a cosy, warm interior with an open kitchen and a stunning wine collection that give this gastrobar a refined edge. In summer, the terrace is perfect for a pre-dinner drink. Make sure to book ahead! Read more about Troef >>

Le French Café

Located on the always lively Javastraat, Le French Café welcomes you for lunch and beyond. This modern French bistro serves all the best from France and truly makes you feel like you’ve stepped into Paris. The interior is stunning! One of the things I love most is how the space is divided into cosy corners: from shared tables to small bistro tables perfect for reading the paper, a lively bar ideal for afternoon drinks, and a lovely terrace. It’s one of those places in East I keep coming back to. Check out my full review >>

Fuku Ramen

Handmade, fresh noodles, spicy broths, a wide selection of sake, and walk-in availability for a spontaneous Sunday lunch. If this sounds like music to your ears, you’ll want to head to Fuku Ramen in Amsterdam East. This new hotspot on Ingogostraat (between Park Frankendael and Oosterpark) surprises with every visit, offering a weekly changing menu. A must for any lover of Japanese cuisine. Rijsel

Set in a former domestic science school, with vintage furniture and a huge open kitchen, you’ll feel right at home at Rijsel Amsterdam. Start the evening with a glass of crémant and follow up with something tasty from their 3-course menu. Expect classics like the poussin and fish soup that never disappoint. I’ve had so many great meals here, all simple, pure, and packed with flavour. Don’t skip the crispy duck-fat potatoes and their perfect salad side dishes. It’s one of those spots I’m definitely returning to this year.

Café de Tros

This warm, modern neighbourhood café with artistic touches instantly makes you feel at home. Be warned: once you sit down for a drink at Café de Tros, you might end up staying for hours. The menu is a mix of French-inspired dishes, classic comfort food, and tasty shared bites. Their smash burger is already famous far beyond East. I stop by regularly and for good reason! Coffee spot and snackbar (yes, with a space in between – on purpose). Turbo, the little brother of Café de Tros, is no ordinary snackbar. Think elevated snacks and exciting bites. Massalia Restobar

Massalia is the Greek name for Marseille, a southern French city originally founded by the Greeks. That’s also the culinary root of chef Angelo Kremmydas, who previously introduced Amsterdam West to his cooking via popular spot Gitane. Since summer 2024, East gets a taste too. The dishes at Massalia Restobar are both creative and no-nonsense, and the wine list is simply spot on. Add in the cosy setting, and you’ve got the perfect date night destination. VanOost Restaurant

Even the exterior of this stately building is impressive and that’s before stepping inside the elegant Pillows Hotel on the Mauritskade. VanOost Amsterdam is part of the hotel and takes it to the next level. Thanks to its incredible setting and the exceptional creations by chef Floris van Straalen, every course, whether meat, fish, or vegetarian (if requested in advance) is a visual and culinary treat. This is the place to go for a four to six-course dinner to remember. Read more about VanOost >>

De Kas

Whether you’re celebrating something or simply treating yourself to a special lunch or dinner, Restaurant De Kas is truly unique in Amsterdam. Located in Park Frankendael, where an old greenhouse once stood, most ingredients are home-grown at their own nursery just outside the city. It’s no surprise they’ve earned a Green Michelin Star. De Kas works with a seasonal set menu, with optional add-ons. Expect honest, flavourful dishes and creative combinations like their classic oysters with steak tartare starter, which we hope never leaves the menu! When the weather’s nice, enjoy lunch on the beautiful garden terrace. Reservations are a must! Read more about De Kas >>

Sushi Fanatics

One of the best low-key sushi spots in the city is tucked away in Amsterdam East. It’s my go-to for takeaway, but the cosy upstairs dining area is also worth a visit. High-quality sushi made with love. Keep an eye on their Instagram for seasonal specials, like uni (sea urchin). At the back of the restaurant, you’ll also find Shigure: a hidden omakase-style dining experience.
