Looking for tips on how to carve a pumpkin? Your Little Black Book explains it in four simple steps. The pumpkin is, of course, the symbol of Halloween. According to ancient tradition, pumpkins are meant to ward off ghosts. While you can still use a pumpkin for this purpose, you can also perfectly hollow it out and use it as a Halloween decoration. Below, we explain step-by-step how to carve a pumpkin. It's not very complicated and a super fun activity to do with the kids!

First of all: thank you for being here to close out 2025 <3.
2025, you were everything I hoped you would be and more. So many new memories.
I don't yet know what 2026 will bring, but last year was one for the books. Highlights included trips to China, Mexico City, Egypt, and exploring the English countryside.
Entrepreneurs probably recognize that 2025 was not an easy year.
When I started Your Little Black Book, I had one dream: not to work to stay somewhere for free in exchange for content and the pressure of a "picture perfect" experience. But to use my revenue models to book and experience those special places myself, as a guest instead of an influencer, and to give you honest tips.
After almost 15 years of entrepreneurship, I'm so happy with the balance between editorial and commercial work and that I can also say no to things that don't feel right.
At the same time, it's still special that destinations, airlines, and hotels hire me to create a customized Little Black Book for them. I have complete freedom with these campaigns, and I believe in the value of these content-based tips that truly suit your taste. And they come from me personally, not from a machine.

This will always be my dream job, the one I created almost 15 years ago. I still do as much as possible myself. That's energizing—from both successes and failures.

This is the coolest new hotel for a night away! Meet @viaantwerp, Antwerp's newest boutique hotel on the border of Zurenborg and Borgerhout (yep, voted the 2nd coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out).
I recently stayed at this gem, and it truly has it all: a lively bar with a cozy atmosphere, walls adorned with creative art, beautiful, bright rooms, and it's within walking distance of great hotspots. And I haven't even mentioned @mea.antwerp! The delightful restaurant, helmed by a chef who previously worked at The Palomar in London. If you know, you know!

Materials for hollowing out a pumpkin
- Large pumpkin
- Pumpkin tools (or a sharp knife, fine knife and a spoon)
- Big bowl of emmer (if you have a really big pumpkin)
- Pin
- Tea light, or go for LED tea lights for safety
- Possibly some old newspapers to protect your table from dirt
Hollowing out a pumpkin: Here are the 4 steps
Step 1: Cut the top off the pumpkin
The very first thing you'll do is cut the top off the pumpkin completely. Do this neatly (for example, with a nice serrated edge). You'll put the cap back on the pumpkin later. Cut out the top with a sharp knife or pumpkin tools. Are you going to carve a pumpkin with the kids? Take this step on your own, as it requires quite a bit of force, and kids with sharp knives aren't a good idea!
Step 2: Hollowing out the pumpkin
Once the pumpkin lid is off, you can start hollowing it out. This is quite a messy job, so make sure you have a large bowl of emmer have on hand for the pulp. Protect your work area with, for example, some old newspapers and put a apron and wear something with short sleeves when you're going to carve a really big pumpkin. Of course, you can easily delegate this messy job to the kids. But... I have to admit, Manuel even found it a bit too slimy, haha. Hollowing out the pumpkin is quickest with your hands or a special pumpkin scoopYou can also use a sturdy spoon! You'll definitely need a scoop or spoon for the remaining scraps. Also, carefully cut away any remaining strings and bits from the pumpkin. Good to know: the more thoroughly you hollow out the pumpkin, the less likely it is to (quickly) go moldy.
Step 3: Cutting out the face
Once the pumpkin is completely hollowed out, start carving out the face. I found it helpful to have a template and trace it with a pen or marker. Just Google it; you'll find lots of fun templates online for carving a pumpkin! Go for something really exciting, or something completely different that the kids will enjoy. You can actually carve almost any shape in the pumpkin. You can carve the face with a fine-bladed knife. If you have special pumpkin tools, then you can use the serrated cutter (a kind of mini pizza cutter) to pre-cut the shape and then cut everything loose with the knife.
Step 4: Place the lighting
Make sure there are enough holes in the pumpkin so that it tea light oxygen to burn. An alternative where you don't have to think about that is to use LED lightsYour pumpkin is now finished! To prevent mold, you can submerge it in a bowl of chlorinated water. Then let it drain thoroughly and pat it dry. I didn't do that myself this year because I'm afraid of bleach stains, but it seems to be the golden tip. Do you already know where you're going to put your hollowed-out pumpkin? You'll enjoy it longest if you place it outside in the shade. If you're putting it inside, check on the pumpkin every few days or place it on a plate to avoid staining your furniture. Light a candle, turn out the lights, and happy Halloween!
