FollowIn this blog, an overview of the newest and best hotspots in Maastricht, because this city holds a special place in my heart. Perhaps because I studied there for a short while, but mainly because it is the only city in the Netherlands that makes me feel like I am abroad for a moment. Maastricht is different. Burgundian, chic, it has everything in terms of shopping, is right in nature, and you can wander endlessly through the narrow streets.
It won't surprise you that Maastricht is one of my favorite cities for a midweek or weekend getaway with my lover. I was recently in Maastricht for a mid-weekend and it was wonderful. The weekend feeling, but during the week from Sunday to Thursday! It is much quieter then than on the weekend, but you still get the feeling of getting away from it all. Via Maastricht Midweekend, you can see all the extras you can benefit from if you are there during the week as well.
Every time I visit Maastricht, I am surprised once again by how much the city is evolving. And although I know Maastricht reasonably well by now, I keep discovering new places. In this Maastricht Travel Guide , I give you a massive update on the best hotspots in Maastricht, including tips for great hotels, good restaurants, things to do, and my go-to shopping spots. Enjoy!

During my last visit to Maastricht, I stayed at two different hotels in the Wyck district. This neighborhood is definitely worth a visit, as it's full of great places to stay, which I'll share more about later in this travel guide. First, two hotel hotspots in Maastricht where you'll have a wonderful time during your city break!
Townhouse Hotel: When you check in to the Townhouse Hotel in Maastricht, you'll immediately feel at home. A pot of soup awaits you at the reception, and you can even rent a goldfish for your room! The lobby, which feels like a living room, is always bustling with people, not only hotel guests but also Maastricht locals who pop in for coffee and treats. The interior is a charming mix of vintage and design, and each room has a different theme.

The Dutch: Perhaps Maastricht's coolest new design hotel. The interior reminds me of Miami, with its cheerful colors and unique art throughout the building. Rooms come in all shapes and sizes, each uniquely decorated. Some are fairly basic and very affordable, while others are over-the-top and more luxurious. Like the disco room where we stayed! Complete with a pink bathtub in the middle of the room and a spinning disco ball. A stay full of glitter!

I mentioned it before, but one of the things I absolutely love about Maastricht is its Burgundian character. From cafés for cozy drinks to restaurants for a leisurely meal and trendy coffee shops to start the day with a cappuccino and a croissant. You don't want to miss these foodie hotspots in Maastricht!
FiftyFive: One of the newer restaurants in Maastricht that's definitely worth a visit, in my opinion, is FiftyFive. It's run with a tremendous amount of passion for the craft, and you can taste and feel it in everything. I went there with my partner for a leisurely lunch, but next time we're in Maastricht, we'll definitely go back for dinner. The interior is very unique and a bit classic, but the dishes are incredibly modern and surprising. It's exactly the kind of restaurant I've been loving lately. They don't follow trends, but really add their own personal touch, creating a sense of timelessness that prevents it from becoming a fad. LOVE IT!

The Wycker Cabinet: A lot of great places have opened on Wyckerbrugstraat in recent years. One of the most charming spots for drinks, in my opinion, is 't Wycker Cabinet. Enjoy the terrace in good weather, but it's also a great place to relax indoors. You can eat there from breakfast (from 10 a.m.) to dinner. The various flammkuchen (flammed cakes) are highly recommended for lunch or to share with drinks!
Wijkerbrugstraat 29b, Maastricht – wyckercabinet.nl
Van Wijck: One of the newer hotspots in the Wyck neighborhood is the breakfast and lunch spot Van Wijck. In good weather, you can sit at the small bistro tables on the terrace and enjoy people-watching. They open as early as 8 a.m., making it a perfect spot for breakfast or your first cup of coffee. They serve breakfast all day, by the way, if you're still craving pancakes around 16 p.m. ;-) For lunch, they serve a variety of sandwiches and soups or salads. In the late afternoon, you can also enjoy high tea here (recommend booking in advance!).

Van Wyck
Zondag Cafe: Not new, but it's been a favorite to return to time and time again since its opening in 2001. This was the first truly great place to open in Wyck and put the neighborhood on the map. It's almost always busy, from morning coffee to sandwiches for lunch and drinks well into the night. They also regularly host fun parties!
Wycker Brugstraat 42, Maastricht – cafezondag.nl
Harry's: Harry's weekend brunch has become a local favorite. But it's also a great place for a delicious lunch or a hearty dinner any time of the week. The menu is French with a twist, and the weekday lunch menu is highly recommended!

Harry's
Mr. Smith: Finally, a real cocktail bar in Maastricht! From Wednesday to Saturday, you can enjoy unique cocktails on Rechtstraat. The interior is reminiscent of a speakeasy bar. It's a great place for a drink before or after dinner! To guarantee a table, it's best to book in advance, as places are limited.

Petit Café Moriaan: Stokstraat in Maastricht is known for its luxury (and certainly expensive) shops. You'll find the best brands all here! Looking for a bite to eat and a drink in a cozy café during a shopping spree? Then pop into the tiny Petit Café Moriaan. Having lunch with two people? Order the platter with various tartines for which they're famous!

The Fire Brigade Canteen: Without a doubt, one of my favorite hotspots in Maastricht's city center. From the same team that runs Café Zondag, and it shows. The atmosphere is always great, the sandwiches are delicious, and the interior has a lovely vintage mix that makes you feel right at home!
Capuchin Street 21, Maastricht – brandweerkantine.nl
Livin Room: If you're looking for a coffee break while shopping in Maastricht, Livin Room is a great place to visit. The coffee is expertly brewed, and when the weather is nice, the secluded courtyard is a wonderful place to relax.

Cafe Sjiek: I secretly think you can't leave Maastricht without a visit to Café Sjiek. It's been around forever and is an integral part of the city. Keep in mind that you might have to wait for a table during peak hours. My tip? Start with a drink at the bar and order a tasty treat! A nice touch: they serve a variety of wines and specialty beers from the Maastricht area.
Sint Pieterstraat 13, Maastricht – cafesjiek.nl
Wine restaurant Mes Amis: Love wine? Then you'll definitely want to dine at Wijnrestaurant Mes Amis during your visit to Maastricht. The interior is classic, but the dishes are modern and excellent. What makes this restaurant extra special is that they specialize in wines from the Maastricht region! If you dine here, I would definitely recommend asking for a pairing of local wines. You'll be amazed at the quality of wines they serve from the Netherlands!

Take Five: Whether you're looking for a quick drink while shopping or a cocktail later in the evening, Take Five was undoubtedly one of Maastricht's first cocktail bars and café hotspots. It's now just as much of a classic as Café Sjiek and remains a favorite with locals, (international) students, and tourists.
Bredestraat 14, Maastricht – theneighbourhood.nl
Café de Bobbel: Near the main shopping streets and around the corner from Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, Café de Bobbel is my favorite spot for drinks. It's a cozy café where I find the marble bar the most enjoyable. Good news for seafood lovers like me! They have delicious seafood platters to share.
Wolfstraat 32, Maastricht – view the Facebook page
Coffee by Joost and Maartje: A wonderful hotspot near the Jekerkwartier district for breakfast, coffee, and shopping. Located in the same building as Koffie bij Joost en Maartje is Le Marais Deux! During my last trip to Maastricht, I started the day here with a croissant and a delicious iced latte!

Teazone: From the outside, this little place doesn't look particularly special, but its secret lies in its hidden rooftop terrace. You just have to know it! It's a lovely spot in good weather, but even in winter, it's the perfect place to warm up with one of the unique teas.
Koestraat 9, Maastricht – teazone.nl
Beer tavern de Gouverneur: Do you love craft beer? Then you've come to the right place at Biertaverne de Gouverneur. Here you can sample 280 specialty beers. We recommend ending the day with a drink and a delicious appetizer platter. Tip: During the Midweekend, you can enjoy a beer tasting at de Gouverneur with four tasting glasses and a appetizer platter for two for €16.
Boschstraat 105A, Maastricht – degouverneurmaastricht.nl
Taverna La Vaca: Enjoy a Mediterranean atmosphere at this charming gastrobar on Koestraat. Order dishes to share, and be sure to ask about the daily specials. It's also a great place to eat if you're in Maastricht with a group!
Koestraat 3, Maastricht – tavernalavaca.nl
DARQ: Love chocolate? Then you won't want to miss this new spot. For good coffee, but especially for unique bon-bons and chocolate made with the finest, fair-trade cocoa from around the world. Order an affogato, which is absolutely delicious! Tip: During the Midweekend, you can book a chocolate tasting here!
Maastrichter Smedenstraat 2, Maastricht – darqmaastricht.com
Le Fernand Café Manger: The Stenenbrug and Koestraat in Maastricht are quickly becoming the city's new IT streets. One of my favorite new restaurant hotspots in Maastricht is Le Fernand Café Manger on the Stenenbrug. Lovingly run by Fernand, it's best described as a French bistro with a modern touch. Open from lunch through dinner and drinks, the menu features delicious French dishes such as aux fruits de mer and escargots. Highly recommended!

Wycker Brugstraat 52, Maastricht
Marsh & The Marais TwoIn the Stokstraatkwartier district, you'll find the women's boutique with brands like Bellerose and Ruby Tuesday. A little further along in the Jekerkwartier district, in the building next to hotspot KOFFIE, is the concept store Le Marais Deux, which also sells men's clothing and a selection of items for kids and the home.

Trader's Pop: This shop was one of the first hotspots in Maastricht and was already there when I was still a student. The collection is still well-curated, and you can also find vintage items, accessories, and other knick-knacks.

The Salonard: Le Salonard's breads are a household name in Maastricht. They now have two locations and regularly host tastings. For more information, check out their Facebook page. Girls: For women, in my opinion, this is one of the nicest fashion boutiques in the city center. They sell beautiful brands from Scandinavia and elsewhere, as well as delicate rings, necklaces, and other small accessories. You'll find this store just a few doors down from Trader's Pop.
Hedge Street 16, Maastricht – theneighbourhood.nl
Retro & Chic: If you live in Amsterdam, this name might sound familiar. This vintage store sells unique clothing and accessories like bags, shoes, and sunglasses. No overflowing racks to rummage through, just perfectly organized!

Lumière Cinema: When I lived in Maastricht for a while, I often went to the Lumière cinema. They're now housed in a beautifully renovated industrial building near the basin, near the old Sphinx grounds. It's not just a fun place to go to the cinema, but also to have drinks or a bite to eat in the café-restaurant before or afterward.
Bassin 88, Maastricht – lumiere.nl
Servaas the beauty concept: If you're having a special party in Maastricht (like a wedding, like I recently had), you can have your makeup done by makeup artists at Servaas the Beauty Concept. This concept offers a variety of beauty professionals under one roof, and it's best to check out the website for their full range. Also great: if you're in Maastricht with a group of friends, Servaas also organizes makeup workshops upon request.

Museum at the Vrijthof: This museum, as the name suggests, is located right on the Vrijthof square and hosts various temporary exhibitions. Before you travel to Maastricht, check the website to see exactly what's on. I've been there a few times (including to a fantastic exhibition about Taschen), and it's definitely worth a visit!

Rent a sloop: At the Bassin, you can rent a boat in good weather! I always love exploring a city from the water. Highly recommended if you're traveling with a group so you can split the cost.
Bassinkade 9, Maastricht – maastrichtsloep.nl
Explore the different neighborhoods: In my opinion, the best neighborhoods in Maastricht are Wyck and the Jekerkwartier. Stroll around these neighborhoods during your city break. If you have less time, here are some tips for great streets not to miss. Koestraat, Rechtstraat, and Heggenstraat are home to many different hotspots in Maastricht.
Sint Pietersberg (Caves North):
One of my favorite things to do on a Sunday is to get out of the city (rent a public transport bike, for example) and head to Sint Pietersberg. If you're in Maastricht with kids, go to, for example, Grotten NoordAlso nice for just a cup of coffee after a walk, because from the terrace of Chalet Bergrust you have a beautiful view of the city!
Strolling in the City Park: On the edge of the city center, near the Jekerkwartier, you'll find several beautiful parks that are a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of Onze Lieven Vrouwenplein or Vrijthof square. Perfect for a picnic in good weather (perhaps grab a treat at Le Salonard), but also stunning in autumn thanks to the vibrant colors!
