Multi-Generation Travel: These 4 Types of Trips Are Perfect for It!

Multi-generational what? Let me start this blog by explaining the trend of multi-generational travel. It's nothing new, but it's growing in popularity. Simply because "older" people stay fit longer, are more adventurous than ever, and travel is now accessible for every budget. And I'll also add a caveat about what "old" means, because 40 is the new 30, 60 is the new 50, and 70... well. Considering the age my generation retires, the free life for a large part of the Netherlands doesn't begin until 70. And I hope I'll still feel 50 by then. Or younger!
Since I'm sure I'm not the only thirty-something dealing with this, I've gathered some tips for you on what to consider when planning a trip with three generations.

Tips for anyone traveling with the whole family

Do you still travel with your parents? Even though you're already half your age and perhaps even have children of your own? With the birth of Manuel, I'm entering a new phase in my travels. My parents are now grandparents, too, and because of that, our annual trips together will never be the same. With a small baby, you're a little less likely to take a city trip with the whole family. So, I'm suddenly looking at completely different things for our annual trips with the family. Since I'm sure I'm not the only thirty-something doing this, I've compiled some tips for you to consider when planning a trip with three generations.

PUUR JONNIE, an ode to Jonnie Boer. Today I had the honor of being at @delibrijezwolle for the book launch of @jonnie_en_therese. I spent the entire evening reading and browsing. WHAT A BOOK. What stories. WHAT AN ODE. Love, Nature, Pioneer, Fatherhood, Music, Jonnie's Foundation, Friendship, Suppliers, Local products, Relaxation, Entrepreneurship, Humor & The pure human being. Everything is covered, beautifully written by @joel.broekaert. With contributions from, among others, @nelsontanate, @rekkebus, @ronblaauwtje, @jorisbijdendijk, @sidney_schutte & @hvw043. Thanks for the wonderful afternoon @jonnie_en_therese 💚 PUUR JONNIE, Available from April 14 at your local bookstore (and online) 🖊️ @anne_de_buck
This is your ticket to Japan without taking a plane 🥢 @tewatashi.ams in De Pijp serves an authentic Edo-Mae Sushi Experience and is super consistent in their quality. It's the place we keep going back to when we have something to celebrate <3. In this video I'm sharing the 2 hour experience in 60 seconds. Still dreaming about the buttery ika nigiri. 🤤 ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck { one of the best authentic Japanese restaurants in Amsterdam serving premium sushi omakase in De Pijp }
𝗔 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗳𝗲́ 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆? @eetcafe_de_reiger is the spot to remember. Cozy, casual, and a seasonal menu. This one was on my list to share for a year and finally it's (almost) asparagus season again! 🤤 Another plus? Prices are very reasonable here! 📍 Eetcafé de Reiger Jordaan, Amsterdam City Center Save this spot for when you're craving warm Dutch traditional dishes in the heart of Amsterdam. And did you hear the same team took over Eetcafé van Beeren? I can't wait to go there too! ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck
A grandma's cookbook. Three Michelin stars. And a beautiful 70s villa in a quiet neighborhood in Bangkok, where you are welcomed as if you were at the chefs' home. The Sühring brothers don't cook based on trends; they cook based on memories. Of their grandmother's farm, of the flavors of their youth in Germany, and of techniques passed down through generations. @relaischateaux invited me to experience Sühring during a solo lunch, and this is truly my ultimate definition of culinary self-care. This was a surprising afternoon in Bangkok, where I ate the best German food I have ever tasted. And that in a city where I normally avoid European restaurants. Well, for @restaurant_suhring, you really want to make that exception. Signature dishes that I still think back to regularly? 🍴 Labskaus with caviar 🍴 Enleta waffle with Pfalz vinegar 🍴 Game pâté 🍴 Dry-aged Duck TIP: When you go to Sühring, reserve seats at the kitchen bar so you have a view of the chefs at work! Follow @yourlbb for more tips you can trust. ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck #prinvited #bangkok #michelin #relaischateaux In this reels, I take you along for fine dining in Bangkok at the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Sühring.
This is one of the best free outings in the spring! Did you know that you can gather (or pick, for the connoisseurs 😉) oysters yourself at various locations in the Netherlands? I’m in Zeeland for a bit this weekend, and if we can make it, we’ll go again. 📍In this video, I show you where you can fill your bucket. Comment *oester* for the comprehensive guide with all the details about all 8 locations + handy tips and rules. Important to know: – Max. 10 kilos per person (≈ 1 bucket) – For personal use only – Do not scoop or scrape the seabed – Go at low tide Handy things to bring: Bucket, screwdriver, boots, work gloves, tea towel, clean clothes, and garbage bags (for the oysters *and* dirty clothes). And of course: bring an oyster knife, lemon, and champagne too 🍋🥂 Because you’ll want to taste something right away, won’t you! The oyster season runs from September to about April / early May, so now that the water isn't so cold, this is the perfect outing. In the full guide, I share exactly where you can easily find them, without much effort. Comment oyster and I'll send it to you right away! Who do you want to go oyster gathering with soon? ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck
𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 These are those few magical weeks each year when the city suddenly feels different. Everything is in bloom and all you want to do is be outside. Coffee to-go in hand, and just head out as soon as the sun shows up. 📍 Bloesempark – Amsterdamse Bos (the classic, yes it gets busy, but totally worth it) 📍 Rijksmuseum 📍 Fruit Garden of West 📍 Westerpark 📍 Jozef Israëlskade 📍 WG site 📍 Nelson Mandelapark 📍 Bos en Lommerplantsoen 📍Amstelpark By mid-April most of the sakura will already be gone, so if you want to catch it: this is your moment. I'll definitely be doing a few more rounds before it's over. ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck _______________________________________________ 🌸 Discover the best places to spot cherry blossom in Amsterdam and enjoy the sakura in full bloom. 🌸

private tour with driver

Private tour with driver (or self-drive)

The phrase "three is a crowd" only really becomes relevant if you're planning a private tour, like a safari in Africa. It might not be the cheapest option for just the two of you, but if you're traveling with the whole family, it suddenly becomes more appealing to book your own driver and transportation and explore the country that way. I did this with my parents in Kenya and Tanzania, among other places, and it was fantastic! Next year, I plan to do the same in South AfricaI'm often asked how to plan a route when you're on a self-drive tour. Don't tell anyone, but a clever trick for creating a great itinerary is to check out package tour providers. When it comes to putting together a group tour of a country's highlights, experts have already done the heavy lifting for you. Of course, you can easily copy such a trip and then plan it yourself! Want convenience? Most tour operators also offer self-drive tours.

Below are some examples of beautiful tours that are still on my bucket list. You can book them directly, of course, but you can also use the route as inspiration for a custom-designed trip!

Private tours for the family bucket list:

⋙ Through Afrikaplus you can put together a tailor-made tour, from safari to wine tour.

⋙ A tour through Costa Rica with a combination of jungle and beach.

⋙ Travel through the untouched nature of Canada, including Vancouver Island.

⋙ Combine a tour through Sri Lanka with relaxing in the Maldives.

⋙ Take a tour through Indonesia and discover Java, Bali and Sumatra.

rent modern holiday homes

Rent a villa or other nice house

For years, we went skiing in Switzerland every Christmas. Until the long car journey after the busiest weeks of the year started to get a bit tiresome. We mainly wanted to relax during the holidays and not queue for the ski lift at 10:3. So we've thrown our old traditions out the window and now celebrate Christmas in the Ardennes. It's just as cozy, sitting by a crackling fire after only a three-hour drive! It's cozy in the winter to rent a house with the whole family and go for a nice walk during the day or visit a Christmas market, but of course, it's also cozy in the summer. That's why we're going there with the whole family for a week next summer. South of France in a large house near St. Tropez. Then everyone can come and stay for as long as their remaining vacation days allow. When booking a house, it's helpful to consider the flights to your destination and decide whether to fly or drive. The sooner you book for the summer, the better the deals from companies like Transavia or EasyJet.

Which sites do I often use when booking a house in the Netherlands or abroad?

The most beautiful houses via natuurhuisje.nl: in the middle of nature, sometimes with an outdoor hot tub!

Luxury holiday homes from private individuals via Interhome.

⋙ Via Belvilla for holiday homes in the Netherlands of holiday homes in Belgium (like the Ardennes).

Via Eliza Was Here, the most beautiful unique holiday homes abroad including flights and car.

With a swimming pool or private sauna, Happy Home has cottages throughout Europe.

Lots of lovely houses and special accommodations in Zeeland.

Cruising with grandparents and grandchildren

If there's one thing I've learned about cruising in recent years, it's that it's definitely not just for the elderly. Of course, you can't ignore the fact that the vast majority of passengers are well over 70, but the average age on board varies greatly depending on the itinerary and the number of days. It's also important to carefully consider which cruise line suits you best. There's a huge difference between them. A fellow blogger with whom I recently cruised the Mediterranean aboard Holland America Line's Nieuw Statendam put it well: think of a cruise ship as a resort on the water, and compare it to a 2-star or 5-star resort on land. You can imagine that each cruise attracts a different clientele. I've been on two cruises in my life now, and I must say it's a very relaxing way to travel. You only have to lug your gear around once, you can relax on the days you're at sea, do something active when you're in port, and you have a wide range of food options. For example, on board the Nieuw Statendam Several restaurants collaborate with renowned chefs like Johnie Boer of De Librije. Especially when my parents get older, I see cruising as a very relaxing way to still see a lot of the world together.

I've made a top 5 list of cruise trips I'd like to take someday:

⋙ A cruise along the fjords of Northern Europe to Bergen (spotting polar bears!)

⋙ Cruising through Asia along world cities such as Hong Kong and the coast of Japan.

⋙ From Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean and including Barbados.

⋙ First a few days in Miami and then a cruise through the Panama Canal.

⋙ Spotting wild bears while cruising in Alaska.

Winter sports with the whole family

One of the holidays we've been taking as a family for 35 years is winter sports in Switzerland. Although my parents probably won't be skiing much anymore, they already love the prospect of playing in the snow with Manuel. We can enjoy skiing during the day and have a beer at the après-ski. In short: by taking Grandma and Grandpa along on the winter sports holiday, you can still go to the snow with a small baby without leaving the little ones at daycare. I don't mind that, but it's more fun at Grandma and Grandpa's.

If you're going on a winter sports holiday with the whole family, it's naturally wonderful to all be together in a beautiful chalet. The advantage is that you can decide what you'll have for dinner, you can curl up on the couch with a movie in the evening, and you can stock up on tasty snacks and drinks at the local supermarket for drinks. Especially in a country like Switzerland That's much more affordable. Of course, you can also stay at a nice ski resort. What I always look for is a cozy common area where you can relax by the fireplace after skiing, or perhaps a sauna. Another option is booking an "aparthotel": apartments within a hotel. The best of both worlds! You get the amenities of a hotel, but also the privacy of an apartment. You can make your own breakfast in the morning, cook dinner in the evening, and often have a living room to relax in. If you're traveling with the whole family, you can book an apartment in the same building for each family. That way, you'll all be together, but you can also sometimes spend time with your own family or seek out some peace and quiet.

There are several helpful websites where you can find winter sports accommodations. If you have specific requirements, book about nine months in advance!

I usually use these websites myself when looking for a nice chalet or hotel for winter sports:

⋙ Via Chalet.nl you can find the most beautiful chalets in 74 ski areas.

⋙ On this website you can easily search for the number of people you want to book a chalet for.

⋙ Alpenreizen has tips for accommodations in almost every winter sports country.

Holiday homes directly on the slopes via Belvilla.

You can also rent winter sports chalets in various ski areas through Interhome.
