The most wonderful time of the year is upon us again, and that means a capital city awash with sparkling lights. Besides the well-known Light Festival, which once again graces the canals and city at the end of November, the rest of the city already draws plenty of attention with its twinkling lights. From Haarlemmerdijk to Utrechtsestraat, and of course, the windows of the Bijenkorf department store: these are the most beautiful Christmas lights of all. Amsterdam.

From August onwards, the gingerbread nuts were back on the shelves (you won't hear us complaining!), and soon after, the Christmas decorations and lights followed. A lovely addition to the city when the days are getting shorter and it's tempting to spend most of your time on the couch. However, thanks to the twinkling lights, the outdoors beckons. In short, plan that walk, because there's plenty of splendor to discover. Time for an overview of the most beautiful Christmas lights in Amsterdam.
The Most Beautiful Christmas Decorations in Amsterdam
Utrechtsestraat
Utrechtsestraat is the perfect destination for all your Christmas gifts, so why not head to this cozy street at the end of the day? Besides chic shops (Smaak, Filippa K, Sissy Boy, and Zielinski & Rozen), Utrechtsestraat also offers numerous inviting bars and restaurants (Bar Babar, Brug 34, Café van Leeuwen) where you can admire the Christmas decorations with a glass of wine in hand.
Haarlemmerdijk, street and square
Haarlemmerdijk has been given a major makeover, boasting a wealth of well-stocked (designer) vintage clothing stores, coffee shops, concept stores, and more. Walk down the street to Haarlemmerplein and finish your walk (or shopping spree) with a delicious oliebol from the famous oliebollen stall on Haarlemmerplein.
New Market
The Nieuwmarkt is literally and figuratively a jack of all trades: it's the place to be during King's Day, the World Cup, and every other national celebration. It'll come as no surprise that this charming square kicks off the holidays with a generous dose of Christmas lights. Stop by De Fonteyn or Café Stevens to enjoy the view.

Nine streets
Just like Utrechtsestraat, the Nine Streets are the perfect destination for all your Christmas shopping and a delicious lunch or coffee break. You'll find popular shops like Pluk, Ree 7, Chun, Bussia, and many more. Shops like GANNI, Fabienne Chapot, Ko, Bij Ons Vintage, Rain Couture, Velour, and Fashian are also worth a visit while enjoying Amsterdam's most beautiful Christmas lights.
Rembrandtplein
Rembrandtplein may be a tourist magnet, but it's incredibly photogenic. As every year, you'll find a modest Christmas market and ice rink, as well as numerous decorated terraces with patio heaters. It doesn't get more cozy than this.
Magere Brug
The Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) is beautifully illuminated year-round, but it's even more magical around the holidays. Expect extra artistic decorations starting at the end of November thanks to the Light Festival. Grab a spot at Eetcafé de Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge Eatery) for a spectacular view.

De Bijenkorf's lavish window displays are a must-see on this list. The building's lights and the opulent displays sparkle with every passerby, setting the tone for the holidays. And while you're in the area, be sure to visit their exuberant Christmas department on the fifth floor...

Beekwilder
The iconic Beekwilder on the Prins Hendrikkade (Amsterdam City Center) is moving to Diemen and is therefore going all out one last time with a generous amount of Christmas lights on their enormous building. If you look closely, you'll see "BYE!" in illuminated letters on their facade.

Christmas tree on Dam Square
Finally, a must-see classic: the Christmas tree on Dam Square. Meters high, imposing, and perhaps the heart of the city during the month of December. It doesn't get more Christmassy than this. And while you're there, be sure to pop by the Bijenkorf and Beekwilder stores, because that's when the festivities are complete.

This is the coolest new hotel for a night away! Meet @viaantwerp, Antwerp's newest boutique hotel on the border of Zurenborg and Borgerhout (yep, voted the 2nd coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out).
I recently stayed at this gem, and it truly has it all: a lively bar with a cozy atmosphere, walls adorned with creative art, beautiful, bright rooms, and it's within walking distance of great hotspots. And I haven't even mentioned @mea.antwerp! The delightful restaurant, helmed by a chef who previously worked at The Palomar in London. If you know, you know!

HOME ALONE 4 INCOMING 😅 My trip to NYC ends in a bad (Christmas) movie when the hotel gives my carry-on luggage with passport to an old lady who doesn't realize this and checks the luggage on a flight to the UK!
Now I'm stuck here in NY without a passport, and I missed my flight.
I've experienced a lot in all the years I've been traveling for Your Little Black Book, but this is a first 😅.
This chat video is purely therapeutic in nature 🤣🤣🤣. Because really: HOW?! 🫢
Note to self: it's better to carry your passport all day, instead of leaving it "safely" in the hotel, apparently... and from now on, attach suitcases with cables in the storage room. Even if you're staying in a luxurious and expensive hotel, everything is still done by humans.
Now I'm stuck in one of the world's coolest cities, but of course I just want to be home with Manuel, as planned. 😔

How cool is this? There are places in the Netherlands where you can cut down your own Christmas tree! You don't hear about it very often, even though it's quite common in America (where I'm currently!).
Good to know: some of these places in the Netherlands are only open for a few days a year and you have to reserve a time slot.

This time we went to @williams.farmhouse, one of my favorite lunch spots in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. But is it also fun during the day with kids?
We ordered a 'plain' version of the Farmhouse burger 🍔: yes, really just meat + cheese 🤣… and together with the fries it was a mega success.
Happy child, happy us... and it was such a cozy, rainy afternoon. I mean, this interior makes me dream of the Cotswolds again!
