13 Italian Islands Where Italians Love to Holiday

Of course, we know Sicily, Capri and Sardinia and some of us may have been to Elba. But did you know that Italy Doesn't it know many more fantastic islands? And those just happen to be the islands where Italians themselves love to vacation. Especially if you're thinking about a fall trip, the Italian islands are a wonderful place to be. It's much quieter, the islands are more unspoiled, and many of the tips on this list are still relatively undiscovered. But just the same, or perhaps because of that, they're all fantastic destinations where the weather is also wonderful in fall (or soon in spring). Do you have a favorite Italian island?

Come with me to get breakfast in Taipei 🥢 Straight from the airport to this little spot to taste soup dumplings and so much more! That's what I call a soft landing 😉
Just back from Catalonia and I thought: I'll share some tips right away. During our road trip, we stayed two nights in the Ebro Delta. An incredibly fun stop for families and foodies alike, where there is plenty to do. · A boat trip to the Musclarium is a must! Here you eat oysters and mussels straight from the farm, in the middle of the sea. · Admire the flamingos and black ibises that can be found here all year round. · Rice is grown in the Ebro Delta all year round. For paella, but Kensho also makes sake and miso from it! You can visit them during a tasting. · Cycling along the rice fields, canoeing on the Ebro River, and visiting various beaches. It was still a bit too cold now, but there is plenty to do. · The towns are very low-key and not that exciting, but you can find fantastic local food there. From the Michelin-awarded Les Moles* to local eateries like Vermuteria Bonmarisc and Lo Tinglado. We ate a lot of fish, but also anemone fritters (a first!). Now back to work, and I’m going to create an extensive travel guide of this road trip through Catalonia, but you’ll want to save these tips for a future adventure. ✖️✖️✖️ 🖊️ @anne_de_buck { In this post, I share tips for the Ebro Delta in Spain (Delta de l'Ebre). 13 X Famous and Lesser-Known Italian Islands

Pantelleria

It's a small volcanic island with an area of 83 km² southwest of Sicily. For a long time, it was a favorite getaway destination for the rich and famous, including Giorgio Armani and Sting. The water is a beautiful azure blue, and the coastline is rugged and full of volcanic rock formations. Since 2016, the island has been protected as the Pantelleria National Park. The highest point on the island is the 836-meter-high Montagna Grande. On a clear day, you can see Tunisia's Cape Bon from here.

The Aeolian Islands

These islands form a UNESCO-protected archipelago, a few dozen kilometers north of Sicily. The green landscapes of this seven-island archipelago (including islands such as Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi, and Alicudi) are characterized by smoking volcanic peaks. Of the seven islands, only Vulcano and Strombili are active. Lipari, at 37 km², is the most accessible island. Panarea, at 3,4 km², is the most exclusive (it is only accessible to pedestrians). Can't decide? You can hop from island to island in a day by ferry.

The Tuscan Archipelago

This is an Italian archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea, located between Tuscany and Corsica (France). The archipelago belongs to the Italian region of Tuscany and consists of seven inhabited islands. The island Elba is the largest and most famous. The other islands (Gorgona, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, and Giannutri) form an arc around it and are perfect for mooring your boat for a day or two. The area also boasts numerous uninhabited islets. One of these, Pianosa, housed a prison for a long time. It was closed in 1997, but the island is still not freely accessible.

13 X Famous and Lesser-Known Italian Islands

The Tremiti Islands form an Italian archipelago in the Adriatic Sea. The seawater surrounding the islands (San Domino, San Nicola, Capraia, Cretaccio, and Pianosa) is crystal clear and has been a marine nature reserve since 1989. The islands have rocky, indented coastlines. Only the greenest island, San Domino, has a small sandy beach.

Elba

Sardinia is the third-largest island in Italy. It has 12.000 inhabitants and even a small international airport. The island is also known for Napoleon, who spent a year in exile here in 1814. At that time, the island was very peaceful. Today, the beaches are full from June to September. Besides days at the beach, Sardinia is also perfect for sports like mountain biking and hiking.

Lily

Because ninety percent of this island consists of unspoiled nature, Giglio is perfect for exploring. The rocky cliffs of this mountainous Tuscan island are particularly impressive. But if you're mainly here to relax, the Tyrrhenian coast is a wonderful place to be. The picturesque harbor, Giglio Porto, is also definitely worth a visit.

13 X Famous and Lesser-Known Italian Islands

Giannutri

At just 260 hectares, this island is the least inhabited of the Tuscan archipelago. Although swimming is not permitted everywhere, the island offers beautiful spots for diving and snorkeling. An ancient Roman villa, Villa Domizia, dating back to the 2nd century, is also located on the island.

Ponza

It's one of the most charming, relatively unknown Italian islands. It lies off the west coast of Laio and is frequently visited by Italians from Rome. Ponza has an area of 7,3 km². The island's landscape is characterized by rolling hills, with Monte Guardia rising to 279 meters in the south. Along the coast, there are numerous cliffs, as well as several beaches, some of which are only accessible by sea. The most famous beach is Chiaia di Luna, accessible through a 168-meter-long tunnel (built in Roman times). Looking for a place to stay? Italians themselves love staying at Villa Laetitia, a bed and breakfast founded and run by Anna Fendi Venturini (of the Fendi couture family).

13 X Famous and Lesser-Known Italian Islands

Ischia

Thanks to its many forests, Ischia is the greenest of the Italian volcanic islands. The island has 60.000 inhabitants and covers an area of 46,4 km². At 787 meters, Monte Epomeo is Ischia's highest point. The fertile slopes of this mountain are home to extensive wine production. Ischia is famous for its thermal springs and mud baths and is a popular wellness destination.

Sicily

With a coastline of nearly 1000 kilometers, Sicily is the largest Italian island in the central Mediterranean. Come here to visit cities like Palermo and Catania, the Greek theater in Taormina, archaeological discoveries like the Valle dei Templi in Agrigento, and beautiful, rocky beaches. The autonomous region of Sicily also includes the Aeolian Islands, the small island of Ustica, the Egadi Islands, the island of Pantelleria, and the Pelagie Islands. The latter two lie off the coast of Tunisia and are geologically part of the African continent.

Procida

Picturesque and certainly picturesque – that's the tiny island of Procida, with a surface area of 2 km² and a harbor lined with pastel-colored fishermen's cottages (where films like Il Postino and The Talented Mr. Ripley were filmed). Unlike the rocky beaches of Ischia, Procida boasts expansive sandy beaches. The perfect day trip destination when staying in Naples. Procida is just forty minutes away.

Sardinia

The second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Its most famous coastal area, Costa Smeralda, has been visited by jet-setters from all over Europe for years. But the island is much more than just a mooring for mega-yachts. There's so much to discover. From Gola di Gorropu, a gorge strewn with white boulders, to Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a Nuragic archaeological site in Barumini, and even the enormous sand dunes of Piscinas. Northeast of Sardinia lies the Maddalena archipelago, an archipelago consisting of seven larger islands and numerous smaller ones.
