Masca on Tenerife: everything you want to know about this mountain village and the famous gorge

Masca is one of the most beautiful places on Tenerife. This mountain village is nestled in the Teno Rural Park and is known for spectacular views, an impressive gorge, and hiking trails through one of the island's most unique nature reserves.

Masca on Tenerife: why this mountain village belongs on your bucket list

Masca is one of those places on Tenerife where you spontaneously stop to take yet another photo. Not because the village is large or full of sights, but precisely because of its location. Amidst the rugged landscape of the Teno Rural Park, a handful of houses lie hidden among the mountains. The view along the way is perhaps just as impressive as the destination itself.

Why Masca belongs on your Tenerife bucket list

In my opinion, Masca should not be missed when visiting Tenerife . This small mountain village is located in the middle of Teno Rural Park, one of the most beautiful nature reserves on the island. For years, Masca was difficult to reach and residents lived largely self-sufficiently. Even today, only a few people live there, and the village revolves mainly around nature and the views.

What I remember most? The moment the village suddenly appears between the mountains. The road to Masca winds through the landscape, and along the way, you look deeper and deeper into the valley. It is the kind of place where you automatically look out the window more often than at your phone.

Masca Tenerife

Once in the village itself, you can take a leisurely stroll past the traditional houses and the small 18th-century church. It may have become one of the most famous spots in Tenerife, but that doesn't detract from the fact that the view is still special. Take a seat on a terrace, order a cold drink, and look out over the mountains. Sometimes an afternoon doesn't need to be more complicated than that.

The famous Barranco de Masca walk

Masca is also known for the Barranco de Masca, the spectacular gorge that runs from the village towards the sea. This walk through the nature reserve is one of the most popular hikes in Tenerife. The path runs through a fragile ecosystem home to plant and animal species that live only in this area.

Good to know: the hike is currently regulated to protect nature and improve visitor safety. Do you want to hike the Barranco de Masca? Then you must reserve a ticket in advance via the official website.

There is also a mandatory transport arrangement from Santiago del Teide for everyone wishing to visit the gorge. Without a reservation and a valid ticket, you will not be granted access to the hiking trail. Therefore, always check the current conditions on the official website before planning your visit.

Are you only visiting the village of Masca? Then you do not need a reservation. A walk through the village and enjoying the views is free of charge.
