Sandberg x Schilo: 5-course pop-up dinner inspired by Yayoi Kusama in Amsterdam

Café Restaurant Sandberg and Chef Schilo van Coevorden are organizing a series of dinners inspired by the work of Yayoi Kusama in September 2026. The five-course menu costs €69 per person and can be booked on seven evenings. The collaboration coincides with the major Kusama retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

I am a huge fan of Yayoi Kusama's work, and Sandberg is one of my regular go-tos around Museumplein. So when I saw that they were organizing a special dinner together with Schilo van Coevorden around the Kusama exhibition at the Stedelijk , I knew immediately: I want to share this.

First, a thorough exploration of the exhibition, and then on to Sandberg for a menu inspired by her work. As far as I'm concerned, a very special outing in Amsterdam and a perfect way to spend a weekend in my own city.

Extra nice for me personally: I am going back to Japan this winter and I already can't wait to visit the Yayoi Kusama Museum there.

This is what you need to know about the Yayoi Kusama pop-up dinner at Sandberg

For this limited-time dinner series, Café Restaurant Sandberg is collaborating with Chef Schilo van Coevorden, best known as the creator of Taiko in Amsterdam and Dubai. Anyone who has ever been there knows that this man is an amazing cook.

Schilo takes specific works by Kusama as a starting point and translates rhythm, repetition, color, and texture to the plate, without literally recreating her art. The menu features, for example, kabocha pumpkin with roasted corn, black garlic, and buna shimeji, and swordfish usuzukuri with umeboshi, kinjirushi wasabi, and radish.

The 5-course menu costs €69 per person and can only be booked on a number of evenings in September.

First Kusama at the Stedelijk, then to Sandberg

The dinner series coincides with the major retrospective of Yayoi Kusama at the Stedelijk Museum. There you can see work from more than seventy years of her oeuvre, from paintings and sculptures to installations.

Sandberg is located at the Stedelijk and is, for me, definitely one of the nicest spots around Museumplein to grab a bite before or after an exhibition. That is why I would plan exactly this for September: first see Kusama and then head over for dinner.
