Planning a vacation to Bonaire with kids? Go for it! This Caribbean island is not only a paradise for divers and sun worshippers, but also surprisingly child-friendly. Whether you're traveling with a baby, toddler, or elementary school-aged child, there's plenty to do and explore. We recently visited with my seven-year-old son and truly enjoyed everything the island has to offer. From swimming with turtles in crystal-clear water and feeding donkeys to enjoying delicious ice cream and relaxing on child-friendly beaches. In this Kidsproof Bonaire Travel Guide, I share my favorite things to do with kids, the best places to eat, hotel tips for every budget, and beautiful snorkeling spots. This is the coolest new hotel for a night away! Meet @viaantwerp, Antwerp's newest boutique hotel on the border of Zurenborg and Borgerhout (yep, voted the 2nd coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out).
I recently stayed at this gem, and it truly has it all: a lively bar with a cozy atmosphere, walls adorned with creative art, beautiful, bright rooms, and it's within walking distance of great hotspots. And I haven't even mentioned @mea.antwerp! The delightful restaurant, helmed by a chef who previously worked at The Palomar in London. If you know, you know!
And now the best news:
I can surprise one of you with a dream night away at VIA Antwerp. 💛
And in my opinion
• Overnight stay for 2 people
• Breakfast included
• Chef's Dinner at MEA
And in Flanders
• Let us know in the comments which friend you would like to stay here with
• Of course, take a look at @viaantwerp & @mea.antwerp to dream away and follow their updates
The winner will be notified personally via DM on December 10th.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and will soon share a mini guide with more great tips for Antwerp! 🖤

HOME ALONE 4 INCOMING 😅 My trip to NYC ends in a bad (Christmas) movie when the hotel gives my carry-on luggage with passport to an old lady who doesn't realize this and checks the luggage on a flight to the UK!
Now I'm stuck here in NY without a passport, and I missed my flight.
I've experienced a lot in all the years I've been traveling for Your Little Black Book, but this is a first 😅.
This chat video is purely therapeutic in nature 🤣🤣🤣. Because really: HOW?! 🫢
Note to self: it's better to carry your passport all day, instead of leaving it "safely" in the hotel, apparently... and from now on, attach suitcases with cables in the storage room. Even if you're staying in a luxurious and expensive hotel, everything is still done by humans.
Now I'm stuck in one of the world's coolest cities, but of course I just want to be home with Manuel, as planned. 😔
To be continued 🧳✈️
And thanks for all the sweet DMs ❤️❤️❤️❤️

How cool is this? There are places in the Netherlands where you can cut down your own Christmas tree! You don't hear about it very often, even though it's quite common in America (where I'm currently!).
Good to know: some of these places in the Netherlands are only open for a few days a year and you have to reserve a time slot.

We ordered a 'plain' version of the Farmhouse burger 🍔: yes, really just meat + cheese 🤣… and together with the fries it was a mega success.
Happy child, happy us... and it was such a cozy, rainy afternoon. I mean, this interior makes me dream of the Cotswolds again!

One of the most fun and unique activities on Bonaire is a sailing trip with the AquaspaceThis extraordinary ship is no ordinary catamaran, but a former expedition ship owned by none other than Jacques Cousteau. That alone makes for some truly special and exciting stories for the kids, told by the father and daughter team who have completely renovated this unique boat themselves! What makes the Aquaspace so special? In the belly of the boat, you can look out into the sea through glass walls. Children can observe fish, coral, and other marine life there – sitting in a kind of underwater observatory – without getting a toe wet. Perfect for children of all ages! Prefer to dive into the water? That's also possible during the various (snorkeling) stops. There's also plenty of space on board to lounge, life jackets for the kids, snorkel gear, and Jiske and Peter will provide a delicious lunch or dinner. The trip heads towards Klein Bonaire or other snorkeling spots, depending on the weather conditions. And it's also great for parents: the atmosphere is relaxed, the view from the deck is magnificent, and the sailing itself is an experience in itself. I shared this video about it earlier, which gives a very good impression of what to expect >>

One of the most unique ways to explore the island with children aged five and up is by kayak through the mangrove forests of Lac Bay. During an eco-tour, you'll enter the protected area with a guide. Each kayak holds two people, and one child can sit between the adults. Along the way, you'll learn about the fragile ecosystem. During the two-hour tour, you can also snorkel among the mangrove roots – teeming with young marine life, such as small fish and sponges. The calm, shallow lagoon is accessible to children with a swimming certificate. Manuel loved it and even wanted to sit on the front of the kayak and paddle himself on the way back. You can book a group tour, as well as a private one. More information about the tours >>

At first, I wasn't sure what to expect, but believe me, you'll definitely want to do this with kids. The Donkey Sanctuary was a huge hit with my son! You drive around the park yourself, where hundreds of donkeys roam freely. The animals are curious and will naturally come up to you to pop their heads into the air-conditioned car and get a pet on their nose. In the shop, you can buy a donkey-themed souvenir that directly supports the donkeys' welfare. A visit to the Donkey Sanctuary is perfect after lunch at places like Brass Boer or Ocean Oasis. Fancy a swim afterward? Donkey Beach is the perfect place! More information >>

For families with slightly older children (or adventurous little ones), a visit to Washington Slagbaai National Park is a must-do. You'll drive on unpaved roads—not true off-road, but you will need a 4x4—past rugged bays, cacti, and beautiful viewpoints. Right at the entrance, there's something special to see: a large whale skeleton that will capture the imagination of kids of all ages. Along the way, you can stop at various snorkeling bays, take short hiking trails, or picnic on one of the beaches. You can choose between a long and short route, and if the kids are still in a car seat, they might fall asleep from the rocking motion of the car on the unpaved paths. Good to know: bring plenty of water, some snacks, and sunscreen, as there are no facilities in the park and it can get very hot. So, head out as early as possible! Don't forget your passports, as you'll need them at the park entrance. More information and opening hours >>

Kralendijk's town center is compact, colorful, and enjoyable to stroll through. The buildings are brightly colored and well-preserved in their historic style. Here and there, you'll see street art, small boutiques, cozy coffee shops, and souvenir shops. For example, stroll along the seaside boulevard—especially around sunset, it's one of the island's most charming spots, where locals enjoy the view just as much as tourists. Gaze together at the fishing boats, pelicans on the jetties, and immerse yourself in daily island life.

Kralendijk © Your Little Black Book
Flamingo spotting on Bonaire is a classic that children will remember for a long time. Goto Lake, in the northwest of the island, is one of the favorite places to see these graceful birds in the wild. With a little patience, you can observe them well—especially if you bring binoculars. On the way to the lake, you'll drive through a rugged landscape with beautiful viewpoints, and if you then drive back via the local village of Rincon, you can immediately discover a different side of the island (and get an ice cream at John's). A perfect combination of nature, wildlife, and culture in one day trip. Another place where you can sometimes see flamingos even better than at Goto Lake is the route to the Mangrove Center at Lac Bay. Especially early in the morning, you might see the flamingos crossing the road, and you can admire them eating their breakfast.

Flamingos at the Mangrove Center © Your Little Black Book
Saying vacation with kids is synonymous with ice cream! We went back to these two places on Bonaire a few times ;-).
Gio's: The classic in downtown Kralendijk. At Gio's Gelateria, you can get deliciously creamy Italian ice cream in a variety of flavors—from Nutella, mango, and pistachio to bubblegum and unicorn swirl. The display case is filled with colorful containers, and you can choose from cones, cups, or even mini-portions for the littlest ones. There's a small, shaded terrace where you can relax, and inside, you can step right into the air conditioning. Also convenient: Gio's is centrally located, so it's perfect for combining with a stroll along the boulevard or a stop while souvenir shopping in Kralendijk.
John's: A local favorite in Rincon, Bonaire's oldest village, and definitely worth a stop if you're exploring the north of the island. John's is one of those places where you spontaneously stop for a break—and are pleasantly surprised. They offer classic soft serve ice cream (vanilla and chocolate) and surprisingly delicious smoothies made with local fruit. Everything is freshly made, and it's affordable, no-nonsense, and simply delicious. There are some benches outside in the garden where you can enjoy your ice cream. This is a perfect stop if you're on your way to Goto Lake or returning from Washington Slagbaai National Park.

Snorkeling with kids on Bonaire is a real treat. We did it almost every day! The sea is warm, the water is often crystal clear, and in many places you can step right onto the reef from the beach. But: safety first. Snorkeling is especially suitable for children with at least a B-level diploma who are comfortable in open water. And even then, a little preparation is essential. For example, bring a dive buoy or snorkel buoy that your child can hold on to for a while or that you can keep with you on a line. I saw this done by others, and I immediately ordered one for our next trip. This way, you'll always be visible to other swimmers and boats, and you'll have something to lean on if necessary.
Don't be put off by the name – it's not exactly a thousand steps, although the staircase down is quite steep. Once at the bottom, you'll arrive at a tranquil bay with turquoise water, a white coral beach, and a beautiful house reef. This is one of the places on Bonaire where you have a great chance of spotting turtles. We even saw them from the shore, even before we'd put our snorkels on! It's best to go in the morning when the water is calmest and visibility is at its best. You don't even have to swim to the reef to spot turtles. They also love to sit along the rocks near the beach.

1000 Steps © Your Little Black Book
A snorkeling spot that captures the imagination. The enormous pillars of this working pier are covered with corals and sponges, attracting all kinds of marine life: schools of fish, damselfish, trumpetfish, and—with a bit of luck—even a seahorse or turtle. The sea is a bit rougher here, so this isn't a suitable spot for very young children. Also, make sure you stay close together; we always hold hands underwater, for example. At low tide, the easiest way to enter the sea is from the rocky shore. As with all the other spots, water shoes are a must. This spot is especially fun with children or teenagers who already have some snorkeling experience. I haven't gone in the water here once and didn't see turtles. Incidentally, you don't have to go deep for that either.
Additional tips for safe snorkeling with children on Bonaire:

Salt Pier © Your Little Black Book
There are countless beaches on Bonaire. Several hotels, such as the Van der Valk Hotel, even have a wonderful private beach perfect for swimming. What other great beaches are there for kids where you can safely enter the water from the shore? These are the best beaches on Bonaire with small children:
A hidden gem on the edge of Lac Bay, where you'll feel like you're on a deserted island. The bay is shallow and calm, making it ideal for small children to play safely, search for crabs, or make endless sand pies. Bring some snorkel gear, and you might spot a baby turtle or a school of fish just off the shore in the clear water.
On weekends, Lac Cai is often visited by locals who bring their families to barbecue, play music, or relax under the trees. This gives the beach such a fun and lively atmosphere.
Hungry? Take a short detour to Jibe City or Sebastian's Beach, just a few minutes' drive away. The vibe is laid-back; you can sit with your feet in the sand, and the kids can run around and watch the windsurfers.

Lac Bay © Your Little Black Book
A favorite for families who want to stay close to Kralendijk. This beach is literally across from the airport, meaning your kids can wave at planes flying low—a guaranteed hit with young aviation enthusiasts. The beach is small but beautiful: white sand, calm turquoise water, and easy access. Ideal for a morning or afternoon of beach fun without too much hassle.
And the best part? There are often a few food trucks parked right next to the beach where you can enjoy lunch, snacks, or a refreshing drink. Think Stoked Foodtruck for great burgers and loaded fries, or Kite City – the perfect spot for fresh fish on a sandwich or a poké bowl with a sea view. Kids can splash around in the sand while you order your lunch. We had a wonderful afternoon swimming here and enjoyed our burgers under the trees!

Kid-friendly beach tips for Bonaire:

the azure blue sea of Bonaire © Your Little Black Book
Thanks to the island's relaxed atmosphere, dining out with kids on Bonaire is generally very laid-back. No one bats an eye at children at the table, and many restaurants are open-air – which makes it a little easier if your child won't sit still. Plus, during this trip, I discovered how many great eateries there are on the island. A real treat with kids! Another fun fact is that, thanks to the island's historical ties with the Netherlands, there are plenty of familiar flavors on offer ;-). From smoked sausage sandwiches to a portion of bitterballen (Dutch meatballs) on the patio. At the same time, you can also enjoy Caribbean and more South American flavors at local eateries on Bonaire. And if you prefer a more international menu, that's possible at most beach clubs and restaurants in Kralendijk. In short: dining out on Bonaire is fun for kids too!
A stylish beach club just outside Kralendijk where you can easily spend an afternoon. There's plenty of room for the kids to play while you sip a cocktail or Amstel Bright. There's no official children's menu, but the menu offers plenty of kid-friendly options like pasta, flatbreads, and chicken satay with fries. The interior is tropically chic, but the atmosphere is super relaxed – you can relax on the comfortable lounge sofas.

Ocean Oasis Beach Club © Your Little Black Book
In the center of Kralendijk, you'll find this cozy restaurant with a courtyard garden and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. The service is so friendly and welcoming, even if you're traveling with children. Ask for the children's menu; it has options for every child! Tip: You can make reservations online, which is convenient at this popular spot.

La Cantina © Your Little Black Book
Right next to Te Amo Beach, you'll find this popular food truck where you can grab something delicious to eat on the beach. The menu features street food classics like burgers, wraps, and loaded fries, and there's often a daily special. There's a cheeseburger for kids, and my son loved it. No frills, just fresh and delicious. And: you eat with your feet in the sand!

Stoked Food Truck © Your Little Black Book
Want to watch the sunset together? Then Pier Dos is the place to be. Not necessarily for food, but definitely for drinks and maybe some snacks. It's a laid-back restaurant on a pier in the water where you can watch the fish swimming. The tables are well spaced, making it extra comfortable for kids. There's a children's menu, but honestly, you can find better food elsewhere. So: go there for a drink and some snacks and enjoy the sunset!

Pier Dos © Your Little Black Book
For a more special afternoon out with children, Brass Boer is so much fun for both parents and kids. Brass Boer is the Bonaire restaurant owned by Jonnie and Thérèse Boer, who own the three-Michelin-starred De Librije in the Netherlands. This restaurant has island chic and a relaxed atmosphere despite its slightly more upscale setting. We sat down for a delicious lunch, and they offer a special three-course children's menu for the kids. My son loved the pasta, and the team goes above and beyond to please everyone.

If you want, your child can eat Dutch food every day on Bonaire, but I definitely recommend also visiting the local restaurants. Our rule is: you eat whatever you like on your plate. Sometimes that's just the rice and a tiny piece of something else. That's fine, as long as a child understands that Bonaire is a beautiful island where real locals live. So, off to Maiky Snack! It's one of the few places on the island where you can still sample traditionally prepared krioyo dishes. Think stewed goat, local fish, rice and beans, fried plantains, or grilled chicken.
The setting is basic but charming: plastic tables under a veranda overlooking the goats in the meadow. The atmosphere is super relaxed for children. There's no special children's menu, but many dishes are easily shared. You'll truly be among the islanders here – a nice change from the more touristy spots around the beach.

There are plenty of great places to stay with kids on Bonaire! You want space, peace and quiet, preferably a pool, and maybe even a kitchen so you don't have to eat out three times a day. As a family, we really appreciated having a kitchenette so we could just have breakfast at home. An added bonus: at Van Den Tweel Supermarket, you can find your usual cheese sticks, baby food, diapers, sandwich fillings, and snacks – they have everything you'd find at Albert Heijn in the Netherlands, so cooking for yourself after an afternoon by the pool is always an option!

Located on the north side of Kralendijk, right on the coastal road, this stylish and spacious resort is perfect for a family holiday. Chogogo Dive & Beach Resort combines the comforts of home with the atmosphere of a luxury vacation: modern, fresh, and fully equipped for families who want to enjoy a stress-free vacation.
The apartments and bungalows are spacious, bright, and cleverly designed. Convenient for families: some units have connecting doors, allowing you to create one large family retreat – ideal if you're traveling with several children or, for example, grandparents. We thought it was perfect! Each apartment also has its own kitchen, refrigerator, dining table, and a terrace or balcony. Perfect for enjoying breakfast and coffee in peace in the morning.
If you're going to Bonaire for a classic, carefree beach vacation, this is the perfect hotel. In terms of amenities, you hardly have to leave the resort. There's a large pool with a shallow area for little ones, as well as a lazy river with a current and large inflatables for floating together. The hotel is located right on the beach! For active moments, you can head to the volleyball, beach tennis, or bocce courts. There's also a professional dive school next door where you can also book snorkeling trips – ideal if you have teenagers who want to learn to dive.
And then there's the food: spread throughout the resort are no fewer than three restaurants, each with its own unique style and menu. If you ever want to dine at the resort, there are plenty of options. The beach restaurant also regularly features live music, which is fun for the kids.

We stayed at two different hotels during our stay on Bonaire. Besides a large resort, I also wanted to stay at a hotel run by locals. Aqua Viva Suites is a small hotel, run by a warm, local family, and located in a quiet neighborhood just outside the center of Kralendijk. The small scale makes it feel more like renting an apartment than staying in a hotel. We loved it!
The suite has all the basic amenities for a comfortable stay with children, including a private kitchen, dining table, and a terrace with comfortable seating. A sofa bed can be converted into a double bed for children.
The pool was right in front of our room. Not huge, but definitely big enough to play and cool off. Enjoy your own snacks and a cold beer by the pool, and it really feels like a home away from home. If you're a family looking for more affordable accommodation, this family hotel is a great option for a wonderful holiday.
Good luck planning your family vacation to Bonaire! I hope you find the tips in this comprehensive, kid-friendly Bonaire travel guide helpful.
