25 tips for a (family) weekend in Schoorl and the surrounding area

13 Januari 2024
Last updated: January 13, 2024

Imagine… staying in the heart of the dune valleys of the Schoorlse Duinen. Within walking distance of the beach and direct access to a maze of hiking trails and beautiful cycling routes. This fall, we stayed at Logis Strandhotel Camperduin during a weekend getaway with the little one. This hotel is a perfect base for exploring the Schoorl and Bergen area. Villages I've driven through so often, but never really gotten to know. Of course, this area is fantastic in the summer. But since I'm not a huge sun worshipper, I personally find these kinds of destinations, where you combine beaches and forests, particularly pleasant in spring and autumn. A nice bonus: it's much less crowded then, allowing you to peacefully stroll through the villages. Bergen, for example, is also a great place to shop! In this guide, I share all the family-friendly and kid-friendly tips for the Schoorl and Bergen (aan Zee) area. You can also drive some beautiful routes around Bergen and Schoorl if the weather isn't great during your stay.

𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗥𝗣𝗘𝗡 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬 👀 This is the coolest new hotel for a night away! Meet @viaantwerp , the newest boutique hotel in Antwerp on the border of Zurenborg and Borgerhout (yep, voted 2nd coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out). I recently stayed at this gem and this hotel really has it all: a lively bar with a cozy atmosphere, walls full of creative art, beautiful bright rooms and it's within walking distance of great hotspots. And I haven't even mentioned @mea.antwerp! The delicious restaurant with a chef behind the pans who previously cooked at The Palomar in London. If you know, you know! And now the best news: I can surprise one of you with a dream night away at VIA Antwerp. 💛 𝗪𝗔𝗧 𝗝𝗘 𝗞𝗨𝗡𝗧 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗡 • Overnight stay for 2 people • Breakfast included • Chef's dinner at MEA 𝗭𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗔𝗞 𝗝𝗘 𝗞𝗔𝗡𝗦 • Let us know in the comments which friend you would like to stay here with • Of course, also take a look at @viaantwerp & @mea.antwerp to dream away and follow their updates The winner will be notified personally via DM on December 10th. Think twinkling lights, mulled wine, food stalls, live music, unique gifts and lots of Christmas vibes all December long. Whether you're planning a festive day with the fam or friends, or just want to soak up that holiday spirit. These are the markets in Amsterdam to put on your calendar now. 🎄✨ 𝘿𝙧𝙤𝙥 “𝘾𝙃𝙍𝙄𝙎𝙏𝙈𝘼𝙎𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙆𝙀𝙏” 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙄'𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝙔𝙇𝘽𝘽-𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙖𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙨. HOME ALONE 4 INCOMING 😅 My trip to NYC ends in a bad (Christmas) movie when the hotel gives my carry-on with my passport to an old lady who doesn't realize it and checks it in for a flight to the UK! Now I'm stuck here in NY without my passport, and I've missed my flight. I've experienced a lot in all the years I've been traveling for Your Little Black Book, but this is a first 😅. This chat video is purely therapeutic in nature 🤣🤣🤣. Because really: HOW?! 🫢 Note to self: better to take my passport with me all day, instead of leaving it 'safely' in the hotel apparently... and from now on, suitcases should be tied together with a cable in the storage room. Even if you're in a luxurious and expensive hotel, everything is still human work. Now I'm stuck in one of the nicest cities in the world, but of course I just want to be home with Manuel as planned. 😔 To be continued 🧳✈️ And thanks for all the sweet DMs ❤️❤️❤️❤️ ✖️✖️✖️ Anne
And do you also have a nice garden? I want to thank you for your patience and help. 𝟳-𝗷𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲! This time we went to @williams.farmhouse one of my favorites for lunch in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. But is this also fun during the day with kids? We ordered a 'plain' version of the Farmhouse burger 🍔: yes, really just meat + cheese 🤣… and together with the fries it was a mega success. Child happy, us happy… and it was such a cozy, rainy afternoon. I mean this interior, I immediately dream away to the Cotswolds again! Schoorl & Bergen Travel Guide

Logis Strandhotel Camperduin: This small-scale hotel is a true family hotel, where three generations passionately work together to run the hotel and its beach pavilion. It's perfect for families because it's affordable (should you need multiple rooms for your family) and within walking distance of the beach with its cool play ship. After a day in the woods or on the beach, you can relax in your room and enjoy a delicious meal and drink at the honesty bar. You write down your own food and drink and pay for it at the end of your stay. For breakfast, they work with local suppliers for the milk and cheese, and even the oranges for the fresh juice are purchased from a Dutch farmer in Spain. The restaurant has a play area for the kids with Lego so you can eat in peace. Tip: ask to reserve a table in that area.

Good to know: there are also two parking spaces for electric cars at the hotel (handy, because we're switching to electric driving in the E-2008 in a month!). They also have a Green Key label for sustainability. Our room had a direct view of the dunes, which was incredibly peaceful and fun for the little ones while they played in front of the large window. And can I give you a sneak peek? Almost all the rooms at Logis Strandhotel Camperduin have recently been renovated! So, keep that in mind.

Play corner for the kids

Camperduin Play Ship: Easily one of the most fun play ships you'll find along the Dutch coast. Run back and forth, slide down the slide and climb back up, take the helm, and above all, involve Mom and Dad (in our case) in the exciting pirate story on this "huuu ...

Play ship at Camperduin

Beach pavilion Struin: Within walking distance of the beach hotel and overlooking the beach and the sea, Struin is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner. It's child-friendly and offers several children's dishes. Sharing your parents' plate is also possible, of course. In the summer, Strandpaviljoen Struin has a large terrace where you can relax behind glass screens, sheltering you from the wind. The menu is diverse, and in the evening, I recommend choosing the changing menu featuring seasonal dishes. View the menu here >>

On the road with a nature guide: One of the most fun things we did this fall was the mushroom trail through the Schoorlse Dunes with a nature guide from the Dutch Forestry Commission. The trail starts at the Schoorlse Duinen Outdoor Centre. If you prefer to go without a guide, you can buy a route map here for a mushroom trail you can walk yourself. The gnome trail is also recommended for younger children. But... let's be honest, with a guide, you hear so many stories about the plants and animals in the Schoorlse Dunes that it's really worth it. The walk is not stroller- or pram-friendly. Respect to my lover who carried Manuel on his neck all the way up the dunes up the 250 steps. So, for his birthday, I immediately booked the MiniMeis carrier (conceived by dads in Sweden who wanted to hike with their young children). During the mushroom hike, we saw the most beautiful mushrooms, including the red ones with white spots. Whether or not there are many mushrooms depends on the weather. Has it rained a lot? Then you might be in luck! And did you know that the Staatsbosbeheer nature centers also have a wonderful gift shop? With nature-themed gifts, many of which are sustainably made. I already bought some small gifts for Manuel's Christmas Advent calendar. Want to know what activities are organized? Then you can search by location on the Staatsbosbeheer website >>

Mushroom tour in Schoorl

The Bear Pits in Schoorl: Going for a walk through the Schoorl woods? Plan your route so that you pass De Berenkuil. A cozy lodge where you'll feel like you're in the movie "The Holiday." A pleasant stop for a bite to eat and a drink while hiking or cycling. It's also easily accessible with a stroller or pram.

Walking in the forest near Schoorl

Climbing Dune in Schoorl & Honky Tonk: Right in the center of Schoorl, you'll find the climbing dune. It's just as interesting for kids in the winter (when there's snow) as it is in the summer, when the sand is still warm from the sun in the evening. While the kids roll, slide, and run down the dune, you can enjoy a bite to eat and a drink at Honky Tonk.

Climbing dune with Honkey Tonk on the left

Children's Theater: The children's theater regularly performs on Sundays in the Schoorlse Duinen. Enjoy a seasonal theater performance with your kids in nature. After the performance, the kids will receive a craft kit to take home! View all performance dates here >>

The Goat Jump: This cozy and family-friendly restaurant is located in Groet, on the road from Schoorl to Camperduin and within walking distance of Strandhotel Camperduin. It's a great place in the summer, thanks to its lovely, spacious terrace. But this restaurant, housed in a traditional farmhouse, is also highly recommended in autumn and winter. Enjoy delicious food and drinks with the whole family while the fire crackles softly in the background.

Lunch at De Bokkesprong

Bergen Weekend Market: Eating out with the kids is great fun, but sometimes it's just a bit more relaxing to enjoy a drink in your (spacious) hotel room after a day out. The little ones can play and you can have a drink without having to be constantly "on." During weekend getaways, we always pick up the tastiest things at the local market or delicatessen. Add a bottle of wine and you're all set! The Bergen Saturday weekend market is lively, and you'll find everything you need for a drinks evening at home in the hotel.

Center of Bergen

Shopping in Bergen: In the summer I often find Bergen too busy, but now it was so much fun to have a good look around the village. Sissy-Boy shop might just be my favorite Sissy Boy store in the Netherlands. So it's no surprise I left with two full bags. Another store you really shouldn't miss is City Pavilion NorthA concept store where you'd love to buy everything. If you're like me and love beautiful tableware, the china cabinet is a candy store in itself. Want to shop and update your wardrobe? Then go to Tally Ho, where they sell various fashion brands. In Stationsstraat, you'll find even more great shops to explore.

City Pavilion North

Deer Park: If you're in Bergen with the kids, take a stroll to the deer park. It's a small park in the center of the village with deer, chickens, sheep, and emus.

Sea Aquarium Bergen Aan Zee: Unlucky and rainy during your weekend getaway near Bergen and Schoorl? Bergen aan Zee has a Sea Aquarium in the town center. It's not large, but it's fun to wander through a few times with the little ones. You'll find over 300 species of fish and seals. Handy: kids under 3 get in free.

Sea Aquarium Bergen aan Zee

Pavilion North: I previously recommended Stadspaviljoen Noord for shopping in Bergen. This beach pavilion is the seaside sibling. It has a lovely interior, good food, and is open year-round.

The Boys – Bergen aan Zee: A modern yet cozy beach pavilion, where they also offer surfing lessons. In summer, there are sunbeds for a wonderfully relaxing day on the beach. The rest of the year, it's a great place to stop for a bite to eat and a drink after a walk on the beach.

Blow out on the beach of Bergen aan Zee

Without the Kids: Maybe you're lucky enough to have grandma and grandpa staying in the room next door. Or you can book a fun babysitter through Charly Cares so you can enjoy a culinary evening without the kids. In that case, merlet in Schoorl (with one Michelin star), The Bourbon Room of The True Jacob Bergen has some great recommendations. They all vary in style, so it's all about what you're in the mood for for a date night!

Bergen Hotspots: Bergen has no shortage of great places to eat and drink. Fancy a good coffee and something tasty? Then go to At Merel's. Where do you like to sit for lunch or dinner? I personally think Lady Papa, Wonders, Loetje en Julie's Always a pleasant experience. Reservations are recommended (especially during this time) to ensure a table.

Julie's in Bergen

Have fun with the tips if you're going to Schoorl or Bergen (aan Zee) for a weekend soon!
