The best restaurants, coffee bars and more! Kampala City Guide

If you’re planning on going to Uganda for safari a few days in Kampala must be on
your bucket list! It’s a very green and friendly city in the hills. There’s enough to do, from good food to relaxing at the pool for the real holiday experience. My family in law has a house in Kampala so I’ve been there many times! It’s great to have a retreat like that and be able to explore Uganda from there. A trip to the national parks like Queen Elisabeth National Park or a gorilla tracking are a must!

From Amsterdam the KLM has a direct flight to Entebbe airport in Uganda. In only one hour you drive to Kampala a city of 1,2 million people. With many great Indian restaurants, coffee bars and other foodie proof things to do!

Your Little Black Book x Kampala City Guide

I think it doesn’t matter where you’re going… good food is always something that creates great memories of all the travels. This Kampala City Guide gives the best tips from me as an (almost!) local!

Hotels in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

Yourlbb’s favourite hotels in Kampala (Uganda) are: Sheraton hotel (with the pool from the movie King of Scotland), Speke Resort (good value for money) and Serena hotel Kampala (beautiful pool and spa).

Best restaurants in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

You might don’t associate Africa with good food. But really… Kampala is full of great restaurants. In this overview I share my best options for lunch and dinner in Kampala.

Lunch in Kampala:
BBROOD (from Amsterdam!)
Dinner in Kampala:
For dinner there are so many great options in Kampala that it’s hard to limit them to the very best. My all time favourite spots are Mediteraneo and Yujo.
Khyber Pass Indian food
Yujo sushi / Japanese food
The Lawns: game meat
Mediteraneo: Italian
Le Petit Bistro: Fench
Khana Khazana:  Indian
Pizza Italia: pizza

PS: don’t expect trendy interior designs, it’s still Uganda and Africa ;-).

Best coffee bars in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

There are so many coffee bars in Kampala. Locals and expats like to spend their days there for the good wifi ;-)

– Cafe Javas: several locations
– Bean Cafe: latte art
– Endiro Coffee: arty spot

Shopping in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

Don’t think that shopping in Kampala is like shopping in Amsterdam. It’s really basic and more focussed on the daily needs. In some shopping c centres in Kampala there are nice little stores with local crafts though where you might find a little treasure.

Acacia mall: pretty new and modern mall
Shoprite en Game: for groceries and almost everything
Garden City: with a cinema

Markets in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

Local Uganda markets in Kampala are Owino market and Nakasero market. For spices and the real local deal! Owina market is also known for its colourful textile and fabrics, like the Vlisco inspired prints.

Things to do in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

Some ideas for very hot or rainy days in Kampala:
Hanging at the pool: both the market hotel and Sheraton hotel allow day guests to heir pools. Sheraton is the cheapest.
– Go to the movies! Cineplex is the cinema in Kampala and perfect for rainy days.
Souvenir market: if you’re looking for things to bring home

– Safari! From Kampala it’s only a 5 hour drive for safari in Murchison Falls. Also beautiful are Queen Elisabeth National Park, Lake Bunyonyi and Bwindi forest. Or visit Jinja the source of the Nile.
