Kampala City Guide (Uganda)

The best restaurants, coffee shops, and more! Kampala City Guide

Anyone going on safari to Uganda should not miss a few days in Kampala. A green and friendly city with plenty to do, from delicious food to relaxing by the pool! I've been there many times myself. Kampala been there, my in-laws have a house there. It's nice to have a base like that and go on safari in Uganda from there. For example, to Queen Elizabeth National Park or a gorilla trekking.

From Amsterdam flies KLM directly on Entebbe airportWithin an hour, you're in Kampala. A vibrant city of 1,2 million people! Uganda was once an English colony, and you can still see that in the many Indian restaurants. So delicious!

Best restaurants in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

Maybe not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Africa... but Kampala offers truly delicious food. Restaurants you should definitely visit when you're in Kampala include:
Lunch in Kampala:
- Soho Cafe with a view of the golf course and super tasty passion fruit juice
- Cafe JavasGreat for breakfast, lunch, and just coffee. Several locations. My favorite there is the tuna melt!
- BBREAD (from Amsterdam!) has a store in Kampala!
- Bean Cafe: good coffee, tasty cake
- Endiro Coffee: nice for lunch and coffee
- Crocodile Cafe & Bar: lunch and drinks

Dinner in Kampala:
Kampala offers a wide selection of restaurants for a delicious evening meal. I've tried many, but I often return to my favorites because they're simply delicious. It shares first place with Mediteraneo and Yujo!
- Khyber Pass Indian restaurant at the Speke Hotel. Eat outside under a huge tree. Magical!
- Yujo sushi / Japanese restaurant: Surprisingly good considering Uganda is not on the coast.
-The LawnsHere you'll find a beautiful garden. And you can eat game meat from South Africa.
- mediteraneoItalian restaurant and the best in Kampala in my opinion (reservations recommended)
- The Petit Bistro: French restaurant – Ggaba Road, Kansanga
- Khana KhazanaDelicious Indian food. This place can't boast about its interior, haha.
- Italian pizza: delicious pizza and cheap!
PS: and don't expect super hip interiors, just delicious food ;-).

Shopping in Kampala | Kampala City Guide

When it comes to shops, Kampala has a somewhat American feel. There are several shopping malls in Kampala where you can find everything you need. But don't expect to spend an afternoon shopping here like you would in Amsterdam. Clothing, etc., are not the place to be ;-).

You can sometimes find nice bracelets and necklaces in the shops near the malls.
- Acacia mall: most beautiful mall in Kampala, is still fairly new!
- Shoprite en Game: here you can buy just about anything you need.
- Garden City: here you will also find the cinema and an ATM where your European card will work.

For those who are staying in Kampala for a longer period, here are a few tips on what to do:
- Hanging out by the poolBoth the Serena and Sheraton hotels allow non-hotel guests to use the pool. The Sheraton is the cheapest (10 shillings, if I'm not mistaken). Perfect if you want a relaxing day in Kampala!

- Souvenir market: for those who want to take a souvenir home with them!

– Safari! About a five-hour drive from Kampala, you can go on safari in Murchison Falls. Highly recommended! A little further away, but also beautiful, is Queen Elizabeth National Park. Lake Bunyonyi and Bwindi forestA day trip to Jinja, where the Nile begins, is also fun!
