FollowThere are few things I find more enjoyable than gourmet cooking when it comes to food. That's certainly why I'm such a fan of Korean barbecue and regularly invite friends over for a mini-cooking evening. Tokyo On my trip, I ended up at Jojoen restaurant in the Shinjuku district. You'd never find this restaurant from the street. It's on the ninth floor of a skyscraper and you can't really see it unless you know it's there. I stumbled upon it while researching good yakiniku restaurants. Also known as Japanese barbecue! It's a spin-off of the popular Korean barbecue, which you're seeing more and more restaurants popping up these days.
You clearly don't come to Jojoen for the interior. It looks awful! Just like in many Japanese eateries, by the way. But that's okay, not everything has to be a hotspot. I loved doing and experiencing completely different things during my trip. At Jojoen, you choose from an extensive menu the dishes you want to grill on your table barbecue. There are a huge variety of beef on the menu, as well as Iberian pork and fish. At Jojoen Tokyo You also see Korean barbecue influences, especially in the marinades. Japanese barbecue is generally unmarinated. We ordered a mix of meat and fish with kimchi as a side. Delicious!

For a full lunch (instead of a hot dinner), you'll pay around €80 for two people, including drinks. Dinner won't be much different. In the evenings, the neighborhood where the Jojoen Tokyo location we visited is located is very lively and busy. It's located next to Golden Gai, which is essentially Tokyo's red-light district. Although you can only tell from the signs; you can't see anything else. Tokyo There are many more great yakiniku restaurants where you can enjoy Japanese barbecue. Definitely try them if you're in the country! Jojoen has several locations and is full of locals. We were the only tourists!
