A few weeks ago I was in Ibiza, and even though I know the island well, I discovered yet another new place. That's how it goes on every trip, really. Ibiza is one of those destinations full of hidden gems. Of course, it gets incredibly busy during peak season, and the popular beaches are packed with sunbathers, but I still couldn't resist booking again for early August.
I put it in quotation marks because on an island as popular as Ibiza, nothing is truly hidden anymore, but you do need to know about these places to discover them.

10 hidden gems of Ibiza that you secretly want to know

Hidden beaches: One of my favorite "hidden" beaches on Ibiza is Aguas Blancas in the northeast of the island. A path and some steep steps lead down to the beach. It's especially pleasant in the morning and early afternoon, enjoying the sun, while the rocky cliffs provide nice shade later in the afternoon. Then grab a drink or a bite to eat at the small beach bar at the end of the beach!

To Formentera: Of course, Formentera is no longer undiscovered, but if you go, you'll notice that the vibe is completely different from Ibiza itself. I always find the boat trip to this island, which is about a 40-minute boat ride from Ibiza, a treat in itself. If you're traveling with a group of friends, I recommend renting a boat yourself so you have plenty of time to anchor at the various bays on the island.

Portinatx: In the verdant north of Ibiza, far from all the partygoers and clubbers, lies the bay of Portinatx. From Ibiza Town, it's about a half-hour drive to this small town, and the winding road takes you through the mountains to the azure waters. It's especially peaceful here in the spring and autumn. Bring your swimsuit and relax on one of the secluded beaches or walk to the lighthouse. Fancy an ice-cold Coca-Cola or a cervessa at the end of the day? Then have a drink on the terrace at Los Enamorados.

Hippie market at San Joan: If you're an Ibiza fan, you're probably familiar with the hippie market at Las Dalias. But for the past few years, a much smaller (and still fairly authentic) hippie market has opened in the village of San Joan. On Sunday mornings, the village square transforms into an open-air market, giving you that authentic Ibiza feeling!

Street Art: For the past five years, Ibiza has hosted the Bloop Festival. This street art festival in Sant Antoni draws artists from all over the world to create incredible murals. This is slowly but surely transforming this town (which is far from picturesque) into an open-air gallery. And suddenly, it's worth a visit, especially if you're a street art enthusiast. In 2017, the festival runs from August 23rd to September 16th. Curious about the artworks created? Then it's best to take a look at the Facebook page of the Bloop Festival!

Favorite restaurants: Many of my favorite restaurants in Ibiza are the little restaurants on the beaches near Es Torrent and Cala D'hort, or the restaurants in the center of the island. La Paloma remains an all-time favorite (make sure to make a reservation!), as does the fish restaurant Es Torrent, where you can dine under the trees overlooking the sea. Other great restaurants a little further away from the touristy spots are Eleoteca Ses Escoles (for the best steaks) and Nagai, where they serve delicious sushi and other Asian fusion dishes.

Movie under the stars: When the weather is nice, it's always fun to watch a movie outdoors under the stars. This year, you can once again visit Amante Beach Club in Ibiza to watch classic films on a big screen. Highly recommended, and if you want to guarantee a spot, book your tickets in advance!

Flea market at Hipodromo: One of my favorite things to do when I'm abroad is going to flea markets. I've found so many gems for my home. Or to wear! In Ibiza, you can go to the flea market at the Hipodromo in Sant Jordi, near the airport, on Saturdays. This flea market is more like a car boot sale, selling all sorts of things. From junk you wonder if anyone will ever buy to handmade jewelry, antiques, vintage clothing, and vintage home accessories. During my last trip, I found some amazing retro tableware and a 70s vase there for just a few euros, the same kind you see now at the hip concept stores in Amsterdam.

Fish Shack: Reservations aren't accepted, there's no menu, and you'll be seated on plastic garden chairs. At this simple fish restaurant near Talamanca Beach, east of Ibiza Town, you can enjoy the catch of the day with a sea view. Although the menu changes daily, I usually go for the fresh sardines, sea bass, and prawns, which are deliciously grilled.

Most beautiful sunset: Two spots on the island are my favorites for sunset. At Cala D'Hort, you have a stunning view of the islet of Es Vedra! Get there early to snag a spot on one of the concrete platforms just above the beach and enjoy a picnic. Another beautiful spot is the small beach called Benirrás in the north of the island. Traditionally a hippie beach, where the Sunday sunset is famous and locals play music as the sun sinks into the sea.
