Tip for the weekend: relax in the hammam in the Bijlmerbajes Amsterdam

12 September 2017

15 cells converted into hamman in the bijlmerbajes amsterdam

OH YES, one of the finest rituals abroad I’ve missed for years in Amsterdam is finally here: a hamman! When we travel, we love to discover new cultures and their traditions and of course to test those massages, health rituals and other traditions. A day to the hammam is one of the nicest ways to completely relax. In the Arab culture a hammam is the place to be for cleansing of the body and mind and is therefore often visited. So it’s actually weird that there are so few hammams in our country. Until today, because we can now go to the hammam in the Bijlmerbajes Amsterdam.

About 15 cells have been converted into steam- and sauna cabins and scrub- and silent places. Behind the heavy prison doors, you can relax completely, by steaming, sweating, scrubbing and mediating. Very special are the inscriptions of prisoners that still can be read on the walls.

refugees are the experts at the hammam in the bijlmerbajes

The hammam treatments are given by real experts: refugees from the nearby AZC. One of these refugees is Yaser Qasar, a third generation hammam holder from Aleppo. He provides the XL treatment: a full body scrub with a full body massage. You can also get a hammam treatment in a traditional Syrian way, a full body scrub with a short oil massage. Hmm, so good!

Note: on Friday the hammam is open for women, on Saturday for men and on Sunday you can relax in the Sauna with your lover.
