Life without Google, can you even imagine it? Well, traveling without Google Maps isn't an option for me anymore. What many people don't know is that this app is truly fantastic when you're traveling and can be a real lifesaver. Hours of wandering or getting lost are a thing of the past with these tips!
This Google Maps feature is truly fantastic. You can create your own map, completely customized for your trip. So, are you planning a city trip soon? Then this is a must! Visit Google Maps in your browser (click) and click "Create new map." Then select different locations (restaurants, attractions, outings) and add them to the map. You can add as many locations as you like and even use different icons for them. Insider tip: if you open the map in a place with internet access (read: Wi-Fi), you can still use the map while offline.
We'll have to wait a while longer for free Wi-Fi to be available worldwide. Until then, we'll have to make do without it. But of course, you don't want to be hit with exorbitant charges for using your mobile abroad. Here's a handy tip: save your maps offline in the Netherlands. This way, you won't have to use the internet at your destination, and you'll still have the map handy. Here's how to save offline: 1) Type a city at the top of the Google Maps app. 2) Tap the bar at the bottom of the screen with the name of the city you've typed. Then tap "more" (identified by the three dots in a row). 3) Select "download." Voila!
Hotels love to play with words, and a little exaggeration is often fine with them. So, if a hotel says it's in the city center, chances are it's on the edge of town, and you'll still have a long walk to reach all the great hotspots. I recommend checking out Google Maps before booking a hotel. Google Street View also gives you a good idea of the surrounding area.
Google Maps makes it easy to see what's happening in a city or surrounding area. Plan your trip and explore the travel options. Can you spend a whole day wandering the city on foot, or is taking the train more convenient? Google Maps has access to public transport data and can provide you with helpful advice on the options!
Did you know Google Maps can also show you the local weather? It's super handy if you're planning a sunny vacation but are still unsure about the location. With Google Maps, you can easily follow the sun ;) !
