Gitane Amsterdam: new hotspot on Jan Pieter Heijestraat

From early morning to late evening: Café Restaurant Gitane in Amsterdam-West, on Jan Pieter Heijestraat, is open all day long. Whether you're hungry or hungry, looking for natural wine or a much-needed caffeine fix, you've come to the right place. We consider it the new hotspot in Amsterdam-West to visit this summer (and beyond).

Greek-born chef and owner Angelo Kremmydas is no stranger to the restaurant world; for three years, he worked in the kitchen at London's Nopi under the guidance of the famous Ottolenghi . Ottolenghi made him realize the importance of preparing his own spice blends, and since then, the rest is history. He learned the tricks of the trade and moved to Amsterdam, where he was appointed executive chef of BAUT. Now, Angelo is at the helm of Café Restaurant Gitane, where he not only leads the kitchen but is also a co-owner.

Menu of Gitane Amsterdam

Gitane's menu features fresh, seasonal ingredients. Kohlrabi, beetroot, and burrata are featured alongside lamb, ribeye, and cod. You eat everything à la carte, as Angelo doesn't like "the hassle of fixed menus"—he prefers you to order what you fancy.

The menu reflects Angelo's Mediterranean heritage, but above all, it's a blend of cultures and traditions. The steak tartare is made with Indonesian spices and papadum, and he combines the cold-served bell pepper with the original flavor combinations of tahini, black garlic, and orange blossom.

Wine enthusiasts will also be in their element at Café Gitane Amsterdam. The wine selection is extensive, and exactly what you'd hope for. There's no shortage of natural wines – sourced from the Amsterdam winery – and the bread pairings are also well-thought-out (the latter, incidentally, they source from one of Amsterdam's best sourdough bakers and their neighbor: Levain et Le Vin).

The interior of Café restaurant Gitane Amsterdam

The interior of Gitane is just as much a feast for the eyes. High ceilings, beige walls, light wood, and a mix of Scandinavian design with a laid-back, Mediterranean energy ensure that you feel welcome and at home. Angelo already shared a peek inside on Instagram that is sure to drive many interior design enthusiasts wild. In short: this is the place to be. When the weather is nice, you can also enjoy sitting on the terrace!

Reservations are essential for dinner, as Gitane has been incredibly popular since its inception. Drinks and lunch are available on a drop-in basis. Café Gitane is open all day long: the breakfast menu is just as good as the dinner, and we haven't even mentioned the snacks yet. So, whatever time of day you're in the mood for a drink, coffee, meal, or snack: Café Gitane is now your go-to.
