Gin Journey: educational and fun-filled Gin tour in Amsterdam!

The Gin Journey tour in Amsterdam is a great experience full of entertainment and discoveries! An evening long, you will follow Albert van Beeck Calkoen (former ambassador of Hendrick’s Gin and Bombay Sapphire Gin and now owner of the company Mister Cocktail). He will take you to 4 cocktail bars; the occasion for you and the group to learn more about Gin’s history, origins and flavours in a joyful atmosphere.

The Gin Journey was inspired by Leon Dalloway who has been running Gin tours for the past two years in London. Since it became obvious that gin has been more and more popular these days, Albert decided to team up with Leon to initiate the Gin Journey in Amsterdam. The best cocktail bars are selected for the Gin Journey and includes 4 samples of gin and 4 cocktail guidance from bar to bar. And guess what ? It is a Saloon Boat that takes you to each destination so the the Gin Journey also becomes a Canal Cruise!

We started the tour at Snapper’s, a small and cozy cocktail bar on Regulierstraat. After introducing the history of gin and the concept of the tour, we tasted a new Spanish gin, Gin Mare. The mediterranean botanical flavours (rosemary, thyme, olive and basil) were very interesting and refreshing. I strongly recommend the experience! It is incredible how much you can smell the herbs from the bottleneck.

We then pursued our tour to Mystique, a bar/restaurant, a few minutes away from Snappers located on the Utrechtsestraat. We were introduced to the Scottish brand, Caorunn Gin. The taste was very surprising since it is made out of rowan berry and an exotic botanical mix including heather and apple! Try the Gin & Tonic with apple slices; unusual but very fruity and exciting.

After a good plate of ribs and fries, the next stop was Door 74, a hidden and sophisticated cocktail bar. There we were introduced to the Sipmith Gin. It is the first copper-pot distillery opened in London since 189 years! The Sipmith Gin has been launched in 2009, but they are for sure tradition keepers!

The last stop was at Porem, which is an amazing place near Central Station. Behind this big  industrial door is hidden a huge asian restaurant and a cocktail bar. I really love the atmosphere of Porum and the Gin & Tonic, made out of Martin Miller’s Gin, was delicious.

I strongly recommend the Gin Journey, not only for the fun experience but also for the knowledge background you will get from it. It can also be a great birthday present, and for sure, you will know how to speak “spirit” !
