visit fashion cities africa in the Tropenmuseum Amsterdam
Our favourite museum in Amsterdam East; the Tropenmuseum Amsterdam opens Fashion Cities Africa on October 6th. A new colorful exhibition that is completely filled by street style fashion and Africa. In the exhibition Fashion Cities Africa, you will meet four lively African fashion towns through the eyes of sixteen local creatures. From the cities of Casablanca (Morocco), Johannesburg (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya) and Lagos (Nigeria). That’s where many famous fashion designers, bloggers and stylists come from. Think of fashion designers as Said Mahrouf (Casablanca), Marianne Fassler (Johannesburg) and fashion blogger Sunny Dolat (Nairobi).
The Fashion Cities Africa exhibition shows the blooming fashion industry in a special way. From streetwear to high fashion, experimental to modest, in the exhibition you will find out what kind of beautifulness Africa has to offer. Brother and sister of 2ManySiblings take you to the Nairobi market, where they buy second-hand designer clothing to refurbish. Also see creations from the brand Maki Oh (Lagos), worn by Beyoncé and Michelle Obama.

If you are in the Tropenmuseum for the Fashion Cities exhibitions, also take a look at the other permanent exhibitions. Last October, “Present of the slavery past” has opened up, a semi-permanent exhibition in the run-up to a new permanent presentation about the contemporary legacy of slavery and colonialism (2021).
